Background / History

Nalan Yanran is the granddaughter of Nalan Jie, the Jia Ma Empire’s Lionheart Marshal. Her engagement to Xiao Yan originated in the friendship between Nalan Jie and Xiao Yan’s grandfather, Xiao Lin, who had saved Nalan Jie’s life several times. Although the families gradually drifted apart after Xiao Lin’s death, Nalan Jie never rescinded the marriage agreement 7.

Several years before her visit to Wutan City, Yun Yun accepted Yanran as her direct disciple. This elevated her standing beyond the Nalan Family’s easy control and made her a possible future sect master. Within the Misty Cloud Sect, she receives special treatment, including female disciples assigned to attend to her daily needs 7 11.

Yanran nevertheless regarded the engagement as a restriction on her freedom. She understood that her family and sect wanted to use the marriage to secure ties with Xiao Yan, whose talent made him valuable to both. Treasure Stall Ambush

Yanran first encounters Xiao Yan without knowing he is her fiancé. She intervenes against the attackers, dismisses his warning, and initially gains the advantage through her swordsmanship and movement technique. After Qi-Sealing Powder compromises her position, Xiao Yan supports her and defeats the attackers. His Dou Shi cultivation astonishes her 3 4 7.

Engagement Challenge

At the Xiao Clan, the pair recognize each other. Yanran openly rejects having her destiny decided by their elders and challenges Xiao Yan to prove himself worthy of becoming her husband 7.

Their spar takes place in the clan’s Qi Refining Room before a restricted audience. Xiao Yan catches her sword and ends the match with a gentle tap to her forehead. She admits defeat and agrees to marry him, but when he offers a Marriage Dissolution Agreement, she cuts it apart. She declares that only a Divorce Letter written by him will end their bond 8.

False Accusation

Xiao Yan uses their private duel as the basis for a false report that he has died from his injuries, helping lure the Jia Lie and Ao Ba families into a funeral trap. Rumors consequently accuse Yanran of mortally wounding him because she opposed the marriage 9 10.

Nalan Su confronts her at the Misty Cloud Sect. Yanran explains that Xiao Yan defeated her in one move and was unharmed when she left, offering Ge Ye as a witness. Her father accepts her explanation and promises to correct the story. Unaware that Xiao Yan originated the rumors, she furiously vows to punish whoever blamed her 11 12.
