| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Approximately One-Star Great Dou Master | 39 | Twelve beasts surround Xiao Yan in the Magical Beast Graveyard. He estimates their strength from his clash with the flaming eagle. |
| One- to Two-Star Great Dou Master | 43 | After subduing the Myriad Beast Spirit Flame, Xiao Yan inherits its summoning ability. His initial limit is three beasts. |
| One-Star Dou Ling | 75 76 | With two rounds of his secret art activated, Xiao Yan summons six beasts against Hai Bodong. With only the first Divine Pattern layer available, their strength would instead be capped at Nine-Star Great Dou Master. |
| Eight-Star Great Dou Master | 78 | Three beasts are deployed to rescue Xue Lan’s squad. This is a documented combat configuration rather than a permanent decrease in their maximum strength. |
| Four- to Five-Star Dou Ling | 112 | Xiao Yan’s advancement to One-Star Dou Wang raises their strength and doubles his summoning limit from six to twelve. |
| Three-Star Dou Wang | 119 | When Xiao Yan temporarily reaches Nine-Star Dou Wang through his Divine Pattern, each of his twelve beasts becomes a Three-Star Dou Wang. |
Background / History
The Flame Beasts first appear as guardians of the newly born Myriad Beast Spirit Flame in the Magical Beast Graveyard. The parent flame originates from the spiritual essences and bloodline power of countless dead magical beasts. Its beast-shaped manifestations defend its relatively weak true body 38 40.
After escaping their pursuit, Xiao Yan observes that the beasts vanish beyond a certain distance. He concludes that they are portions split from the Heavenly Flame rather than separate Heavenly Flames themselves. Using Rock-Gnawing Mice to draw the guardians away, he enters their territory and lays a trail of fire-attribute bait for the main body 39 41.
Once Xiao Yan subdues the Myriad Beast Spirit Flame, he gains the ability to summon Flame Beasts by expending Dou Qi. Their initial strength resembles that of the original guardians, but their number and power subsequently increase with his cultivation 43 112.
Appearance
Flame Beasts are constructs of blood-red fire that assume numerous magical-beast forms 38 39.
- Documented forms: Python, eagle, ape, tiger, elephant, fish, and other flying beasts 38 39 156.
- Variable size: Xiao Yan uses a small bird for underground scouting, while a combat bird exceeds ten meters in length 78 88.
- Not the parent flame’s true body: The Myriad Beast Spirit Flame itself initially appears as a puppy twenty to thirty centimeters long, with a richer color and more intense heat than its guardians 42.
Abilities & Skills
Manifestation and Control
- Xiao Yan creates Flame Beasts by splitting the Myriad Beast Spirit Flame and supplying Dou Qi 43 112.
- They follow his orders, including instructions to spare humans or target enemies of the Desert Iron Mercenary Group 78 112.
- He can dismiss them immediately; three beasts vanish when he snaps his fingers after the desert rescue 79.
Heavenly Flame Combat
- Burning attacks: The original guardians launch volleys of fireballs. Flames adhering to Xiao Yan burn his own Dou Qi as fuel and require additional Dou Qi to extinguish 39.
- Form-specific attacks: A bird releases scorching gusts, an ape delivers crushing punches, and a python erupts from the ground to swallow opponents 78.
- Danger beyond their realm: Their Heavenly Flame heat forces even the Five-Star Dou Emperor Lu Man to defend carefully against them 119.
Regeneration
- A beast struck by a counterattack can immediately restore itself and resume fighting, provided the wisp of Heavenly Flame within it remains alight 119.
- Xiao Yan’s first Great Flame Palm knocks back the graveyard’s flaming eagle without destroying it 38.
Self-Destruction
- Xiao Yan can order multiple beasts to detonate together. Six One-Star Dou Ling beasts exploding in a confined space could grievously injure a low-star Dou Wang 76.
- Against Lu Man, he combines their self-destruction with the Wind Fury Dragon Flame’s acceleration, breaking her escape technique and injuring her 119.
Scouting and Sensory Link
- Beasts containing even a wisp of Heavenly Flame can sense another Heavenly Flame, allowing Xiao Yan to use them in searches 77.
- Through the parent flame, Xiao Yan communicates directly with his beasts and perceives what they see and touch 88.
- A small bird-shaped beast illuminates an underground passage and scouts several hundred meters ahead, locating a magma pool 88.
Alchemy Assistance
- Xiao Yan summons eight flying Flame Beasts during the Alchemist Conference’s second round 156.
- Their flames process medicinal ingredients simultaneously while he handles fusion and condensation, allowing him to finish his Windwalk Pill before the black-robed competitor 156.
Limitations
- Poor tactical intelligence: They mainly attack head-on without an organized formation. During the desert rescue, one Snake-Person survives by hiding after an attack misses its vitals, forcing Xiao Yan to intervene personally 78 79 119.
- Immaturity: Xiao Yan attributes their poor combat intelligence to the parent flame’s youth; improvement through maturation remains an expectation rather than a demonstrated development 79.
- Original range restriction: The graveyard guardians dissipate when their pursuit carries them too far from the main flame 39.
- Altitude restriction: Xiao Yan cannot sustain his summoned beasts above ten thousand meters 119.
- Diversion: Fast-moving Rock-Gnawing Mice draw the original guardians away, creating an opening to approach the parent flame 41.
Relationships
- Myriad Beast Spirit Flame — Source of their fire and beast-manifestation ability; the original beasts protect its true body 40 108.
- Xiao Yan — Summoner and commander after subduing their parent flame; his power determines their strength and available number 43 112 119.
- Desert Iron Mercenary Group — Protected by Xiao Yan’s summons during both the desert ambush and the attack on the group’s headquarters 78 112.
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Hai Bodong confrontation: Six Flame Beasts surround the former Ice Emperor. Xiao Yan’s threat of simultaneous detonation helps bring the confrontation to a peaceful discussion 75 76.
- Desert rescue: Three beasts overwhelm the Snake-People surrounding Xue Lan’s squad while sparing the mercenaries. One attacker survives their initial assault and attempts to flee 78.
- Luo Bu’s submission: Six beasts surround Luo Bu after Xiao Yan kills Mo Xing. Their overwhelming auras help force him to abandon hostility toward the Desert Iron Mercenary Group 85.
- Qing Lin rescue attempt: Twelve beasts kill Mo Cheng’s surrounding Dou Shi, and one blocks his axe attack. They later fight Lu Man before detonating to disrupt her escape with Qing Lin 117 119.
- Shadow Tower assessment: Twelve beasts intercept and crush the Emperor-Breaking Pill owner’s Flame-to-Python Transformation during his test of Xiao Yan 141.
- Alchemist Conference: Eight flying beasts initially panic the Royal Plaza’s spectators. Fa Ma explains that they are Xiao Yan’s flames, after which they assist his rapid pill refinement 156.
