Background / History
Tongtian attended the Dao lectures at Zixiao Palace, where Xihe and Changxi saw him without forming a personal acquaintance. He later founded the Interception Sect, a Saint’s lineage renowned for “Ten Thousand Immortals Paying Homage” 14.
Based on Golden Ao Island, he teaches an audience that includes more than a hundred thousand outer disciples. His doctrine centers on “intercepting” the one possibility that escapes the heavenly evolution, while the sect professes to teach without discrimination. Despite that principle, Tongtian initially pays little attention to outer disciples and expects that some will never attain the Dao 1 2.
Appearance
- Build: A majestic frame 1.
- Presence: A heaven-shaking aura, accompanied by the purple qi and holy light surrounding Golden Ao Island during his sermon 1.
- During cultivation: Sword intent swirls in his eyes when he emerges from seclusion, shattering the space before him 7.
Personality
Tongtian is direct and authoritative, but values a firm Dao Heart more than unquestioning obedience. Although Gu Changqing openly contradicts him during a sermon, he responds with amusement and approval rather than anger. His tolerance grows as he recognizes the disciple’s talent, allowing repeated breaches of etiquette that alarm the other disciples 2 8 17.
He is protective without entirely abandoning discipline. He initially condemns Gu Changqing’s mutilation of fellow disciples, then reverses his judgment after discovering their attempted murder. Even in his fury, he spares Dingguang Xian and Qiu Shou Xian because of their long service, imposing ten thousand years of lightning tribulations instead 22.
Tongtian is cautious about calamity-related karma and the Heavenly Mandate. He discourages dealings with the Witch and Demon Clans and initially tries to stop Gu Changqing from defending humanity. Once he understands the disciple’s resolve, however, he chooses to support him despite those concerns 25 29 49 50.
