Background / History

Gu Changqing awakens in the Primordial World as an ordinary Outer Sect disciple of the Interception Sect. His fusion with the Great Dao of Wine gives him an unconventional cultivation path: every sip strengthens him and can yield divine arts or Dao insights. For the next two thousand years, other disciples mistake his constant drinking for neglect of cultivation 1.

His previous life also gives him knowledge unavailable to his contemporaries. He recognizes Long-Eared Dingguang Immortal as a future traitor who will abandon the Interception Sect during the Investiture of the Gods tribulation. This knowledge reinforces his contempt for Dingguang’s cruelty and opportunism 8.

Appearance

Gu Changqing appears to be a young man no older than twenty, despite having cultivated for several thousand years 13.

  • Graceful, jade-like bearing: His appearance becomes particularly striking when he performs swordsmanship 10 13.
  • Drunken complexion and posture: Commonly has a flushed face, bleary eyes, and an unsteady gait 13 33.
  • Suddenly piercing gaze: His apparently unfocused eyes sharpen when he releases sword power or senses killing intent 3 37.
  • Reshaped Dao body: During his Daluo breakthrough, his flesh becomes transparent and his radiant sinews and bones are described as “golden muscles and jade bones” 40.

Personality

Gu Changqing is carefree, irreverent, and largely indifferent to rank or ceremony. He drinks during Tongtian’s sermon, delays a summons to fetch wine, and sees no reason to change his habits after becoming a Personal Disciple. His apparent disregard for cultivation is misleading: drinking is his cultivation, and better wine is a practical priority rather than merely an indulgence 1 7 31 39.

He deliberately keeps others from understanding the full extent of his abilities. After frightening Qiu Shou Xian into submission, he claims that he was only drinking; Tongtian later recognizes that pressing him for his secrets is futile. Despite his drunken appearance, wine can make his eyes clearer and his mind sharper 5 9 17.

His relaxed manner gives way to severity toward those who prey on humans. He intentionally terrifies Qiu Shou Xian partly because of the latter’s habit of eating people, and witnessing a human massacre provokes grief and killing intent. He also repays kindness: his warning to the Queen Mother of the West is explicitly motivated by her gift of spring water 4 42 46.

Abilities & Skills

Great Dao of Wine

Gu Changqing possesses a complete Great Dao that converts drinking into cultivation and comprehension 1 18.

  • Wine increases his cultivation, strengthens divine consciousness, and grants insights into divine arts and Dao principles 1.
  • Powerful brews require longer digestion; a drunken sleep can therefore function as an extended cultivation session 7.
  • His Dao of Wine and Sword Dao are fused, with increasing drinking capacity reflecting deeper sword attainment 32.
  • Dao resonance released while he drinks can benefit nearby cultivators, as demonstrated by Xihe and Changxi 15.
  • Wine quality must rise with his realm. After becoming a twelve-petaled Daluo Golden Immortal, ordinary wine offers almost no benefit 14 42.
  • The full nature of his possession of the Great Dao remains his closely guarded secret 18.

Spiritual Wine Brewing

He uses Dao-powered seals to brew spiritual roots, immortal fruits, and sacred water into cultivation wine 17 45.

  • Brewing preserves the ingredients’ medicinal potency and fully releases their effects rather than wasting them 18.
  • Even his lowest-grade wine can prolong life, strengthen foundations, and nourish vitality 8.
  • Moon Laurel wine increases Bixiao’s magical power and supports his own origin sublimation 18 19 20.
  • Wine given to Ji Ren cleanses and strengthens the youth’s body and replenishes his strength during travel 46.
  • He combines Ginseng Fruits with Immortal Divine Spring Water to produce a finer brew 44 45 47.

Sword Dao and Sword Force

Gu Changqing can manifest overwhelming sword power without holding a physical weapon 3.

  • Produces sword force, described as a deeper expression of the Sword Dao than sword intent, to shatter Qiu Shou Xian’s aura 3.
  • His spoken sword verses can trigger immense manifestations of sword intent and make more than a hundred thousand disciples’ swords rise in homage 5 11.
  • Leaves a Sword Dao imprint that other disciples contemplate for swordsmanship insights 13.
  • Condenses sword intent into an imitation of Tongtian’s Qingping Sword convincing enough to deceive his fellow disciples and frighten away the Demon Court delegation 30.
  • Uses his Sword Dao mastery to complete the twelfth rank of his Daluo bloom 40 41.

Myriad Swords Saint Art

This divine Sword Dao technique lets him borrow external sword intent and wield it as his own. At its pinnacle, it can gather all sword intent between heaven and earth with a thought 7.

  • Draws sword intent from nearby treasures without their owners deliberately assisting him 37.
  • Resonates with Tongtian’s Four Immortal-Slaying Swords and a treasured sword in Nuwa’s sea of consciousness 37.
  • Enables him to defeat the Twelve Golden Immortals without drawing his own sword 36 37.

Sword Opens Heaven’s Gate

Created during enlightenment induced by Ginseng Fruit wine, this ability manifests a colossal heavenly sword 48.

  • His hand seals increase the sword’s radiance before its release 48.
  • The strike shatters the firmament, opens enormous fissures, and exposes torrents of spacetime turbulence 48.
  • Tongtian prevents the disciples from interrupting its creation; Gu Changqing subsequently ignores their requests to teach it 48.

Foreknowledge and Warnings

His knowledge of future events informs predictions and advice that alarm even powerful cultivators 8 26.

  • Predicts that both the Witch Clan and Demon Race will become names in ancient texts; Tongtian conceals the heavenly secrets surrounding the declaration 26.
  • Warns the Queen Mother of the West to preserve herself rather than join the King Father of the East’s project. After his destruction, she realizes the warning saved her life 46 48.

Daluo Movement and Aura Control

His Daluo breakthrough makes vast-distance movement and precise suppression effortless 42.

  • Can cross ten thousand miles with a step or thought 42.
  • Uses only a wisp of his aura to slow attacking demons, allowing Ji Ren to kill them himself 42.
  • Carries the unconscious Ji Ren through the air using immortal light 43.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Purple-Green Nine Heavens Sword — A high-grade Innate Spiritual Treasure containing a trace of innate purple qi, granted by Tongtian. It emerges from Gu Changqing’s sea of consciousness to repel the Six Souls Banner during an assassination attempt 10 20.
  • Water-Fire Gourd / Wine God Gourd — A supreme-grade Innate Spiritual Treasure given as compensation by Tongtian. Originally contains nine heavens profound fire and nine nether profound water; Gu Changqing instead uses it to store wine and drinks from it without apparent harm 23 24 35.
  • Kongtong Seal — A divine seal previously used to protect Ji Ren. Gu Changqing identifies and accepts it when Ji Ren offers it while requesting discipleship 43.
  • Spiritual wine reserves — Collects more than ten thousand jars from the Interception Sect Treasury and later takes another ten thousand jars of Flat Peach immortal wine at the heavenly marriage banquet 9 35.
  • Rare brewing ingredients — Uses Moon Laurel Blossoms and Innate Holy Spring water, then three Ginseng Fruits and more than a hundred thousand jin of Immortal Spring Water 17 44 45.

Relationships

  • Ji Ren — Human disciple. Gu Changqing restores his resolve after a massacre, tests him through drinking rather than talent, and takes responsibility for strengthening his foundation 42 43 44 46.

  • Bixiao — Curious and supportive fellow disciple. She seeks his sword insights, shares his Moon Laurel wine, and supports his proposed promotion 5 18 19 28.
  • Zhao Gongming — Skeptical fellow disciple who questions his conduct and strength. Tongtian’s explanation of the Qingping Sword imitation silences his objections, though Gu Changqing’s new seniority remains difficult for him to accept 11 28 30 31.
  • Xihe and Changxi — Taiyin goddesses who benefit from his Dao resonance and later seek his guidance against their arranged heavenly marriage. Xihe develops a personal interest in him, but no romantic relationship is established 15 17 26.
  • Qiu Shou Xian and Long-Eared Dingguang Immortal — Hostile sect members who attempt to kill him with the Six Souls Banner. Their failure leads to punishment by Tongtian 20 22.
  • Di Jun and Taiyi — Demon Court antagonists who blame him for disrupting Di Jun’s destined marriage to the Taiyin goddesses 28 30.
  • Yuanshi and the Twelve Golden Immortals — Rival sect figures. Gu Changqing challenges Yuanshi’s disparagement of the Interception Sect and defeats all twelve disciples 34 35 37.
  • Nuwa — Takes an interest in his human origins and exceptional power, supports his account of the Myriad Swords Saint Art, and invites him to discuss the Dao at Wa Huang Heaven 37 38.
  • Queen Mother of the West — Supplies his brewing water and is saved by his warning. She resolves to befriend him and never become his enemy 44 46 48 49.
