Background / History

Enslavement and Rescue

Chen Baiqing’s mother sold her so that the family could survive. Her fragmented memories include being forced to take medicine that caused severe pain and being threatened with her family’s starvation if she cried or was sent back. After waking under Chu Xingchen’s care, she remembered little of her father or original name and understood “Chen Baiqing” as the name her master had given her 74.

She accepted Chu Xingchen as her master and became his third disciple. Initially, she believed that she had merely been sold to another owner: she called him “my lord,” asked what work she should perform, and anxiously offered to cook. Chu Xingchen explained that becoming his disciple meant finding a new home, not entering servitude 73 74.

Her first evening with the sect introduced her to its family life. Chu Xingchen let her tend the cooking fire, Li Xingtian brought sweets, and Li Yingling bought her clothes and shoes. Eating candied fruit and watching the others bicker helped her begin to understand what having a master meant 74 75.

Learning to Belong

Li Xingtian helped teach Baiqing to read and guided her introduction to cultivation. Despite being described as clever and naturally talented, she considered herself inferior to her senior siblings and compensated by cultivating through the night and studying during the day 76 77 83 109.

Chu Xingchen’s early lessons emphasized caution, trust, and family bonds within the sect. His conduct also produced some unintended lessons: after watching him flatter a Clearwind Sect elder, Baiqing concluded that one should behave differently behind someone’s back and need not feel guilty about bullying fools 80 83.

After reaching Foundation Establishment, she assisted Li Yingling with recruitment. She took the responsibility seriously and promised to become a good senior sister like Li Yingling 109 115.

First Investigations

On a journey with Chu Xingchen, Baiqing investigated Zhou Family Village’s ancestral ritual. She recruited Zhou Ping as a guide, hid in his herb basket, and concluded that the ritual was testing whether wish power could sustain cultivation without a loss of realm 246 248.

Her attempt to seize Zhou Ancestor for questioning was stopped by a Nascent Soul Daoist, who restrained her with a Bagua formation and golden chains. She subsequently left the ancestral hall with Zhou Ping and reproduced the ritual for the investigators examining it 248 249 250.

Back at the sect, Chu Xingchen entrusted her with responsibility for the residential area’s construction. She also helped manage Cui Hao, confronting him when he used Sandong to test whether his extravagant building plans would be accepted. Baiqing insisted that sect members should discuss their wishes openly rather than manipulate one another 332 340 361.

Independent Experience

While waiting for Chu Xingchen at the Heavenly Derivation Sect, Baiqing rejected Lü Xuan’s attempt to persuade her by inventing instructions from her master. She explained that Chu Xingchen’s most serious instruction was to “be yourself,” then resolved to gain enough experience to stand beside him rather than remain behind his protection. Lü Xuan secretly assigned four A-Class Pivot Court teams to safeguard her without restricting her choices 378.

Traveling under an illusion that made her appear ordinary and poorly equipped, she accepted a demon-hunting task with little prospect of useful compensation. During the investigation, she recognized an unfamiliar energy resembling something she had encountered in Zhou Family Village, preserved a sample, and later recreated the encounter for Chu Xingchen 387 389 390 392.

Her return demonstrated how much she had matured. Li Yingling’s letters praised her composure, caution, judgment, and ability to influence people. Baiqing also brought gifts for her fellow disciples, including an outfit whose illusion design could disguise Li Xingtian’s red energy as white 429.

Demon Operations and Protecting Her Master

Baiqing deceived Winter Melon and Pig Mask by claiming to serve Vulture Peak and describing their survival as part of an operation against a high-ranking traitor. Afterward, she reported that Vulture Peak was likely involved with Demons 487.

She later supervised the disposal of Winter Melon’s apparently dead body. When Winter Melon revived and fled east, Baiqing prevented the Heavenly Derivation Sect disciples from pursuing and reported the task complete 534.

Fearing for Chu Xingchen’s safety, she accepted Li Xingtian’s request to redirect the Great Dao Sect’s Tribulation Transcendence cultivators from the Western Ox-He Continent toward Yuzhou City without their master’s knowledge. She understood the danger to those left behind and accepted the possibility of expulsion from her master’s tutelage 583.

On her return, Chu Xingchen declined to reprimand her, acknowledged her contribution, and advised her to think carefully before acting. When offered a choice of personal development, Baiqing chose cultivation talent because she believed strength was necessary to protect him; he then upgraded her principal trait 592 593.

Profound Clarity Heavenly Sect

After consolidating Nascent Soul cultivation, Baiqing proposed visiting the Profound Clarity Heavenly Sect both to gain experience and to strengthen its relationship with Chu Xingchen. She concealed additional motives for bringing Li Xingtian, but Chu Xingchen refused that arrangement and sent Cui Hao with her instead 654.

During an operation against evil cultivators, she led a Nascent Soul team and used illusions to outmaneuver a Spirit Transformation opponent. She continued undertaking missions for the Profound Clarity Heavenly Sect thirteen years later and became known as its Uncalculating Demoness 686 699 705.

Cangwu Kingdom and Dongsheng Shenzhou

During the Cangwu Kingdom rebellion, Baiqing argued for delaying intervention until worsening conditions would make Mister Li’s moderate approach acceptable. She admitted that she would have accepted the resulting deaths as the responsibility of Wuwang and the Buddhist Sect. Li Yingling persuaded her to follow their master’s timing, but their disagreement later developed into a serious breach of trust 728 746.

Baiqing eventually returned to reconcile with Li Yingling. By introducing Qian Qing as a guest, she deliberately established a distinction between outsiders and family before apologizing. Their quarrel had ended by the time Li Yingling began assigning her duties again 794 795 796.

Her forceful policies in Dongsheng Shenzhou earned her the intimidating title White Nether True Lord and drove numerous evil cultivators elsewhere. At the same time, her prompt rewards and willingness to employ capable people regardless of past hostility attracted followers. She became especially enraged when a coordinated slander campaign targeted Chu Xingchen 834 848.

Chu Xingchen’s Disappearance

After Chu Xingchen left Ten Thousand Flowers Ridge and remained missing for three days, Baiqing pressed Xie Lingyu for answers. Bai Xuanling told her that recovering lost authority could secure his return, but Baiqing rejected becoming the price of that return 880.

After calming herself, she decided to search for the authority alone. Li Xingtian then revealed that he could actively use his power and requested her help. After asking whether the situation had been his choice, she agreed 880.

Appearance

  • Childhood: Small, thin, and pretty; initially wears ragged clothing and anxiously clutches it when offering to work for Chu Xingchen 74 75.
  • Growth: Develops from a little girl into a young maiden; Chu Xingchen notices that she has grown from waist-height to chest-height beside him 340 364.
  • Adult features: Tall and graceful, with delicate features and fully developed peach-blossom eyes whose expression is usually calm and contemplative 429.
  • Bearing: Understated, refined, and proper rather than overtly seductive, despite her Bewitching Heaven Demoness trait 429.
  • Clothing: Usually favors plain, muted colors. During her independent travels, she wears a purple veil and maintains an illusion disguising her appearance 387 429.

Personality

Baiqing begins as a frightened, exceptionally compliant child who believes she must work to avoid being sent away. Even after finding security, she remains diligent and self-critical, describing herself as slow and treating her master’s kindness as something she must repay through effort 74 77 109.

Her gentleness is genuine but highly selective. She treasures her sect’s safety far more than abstract ideals or great causes and admits that she would rather be narrow-minded than endanger the people she loves. Outsiders increasingly encounter a composed, calculating, and sometimes ruthless woman beneath her pleasant manners 344 548 728.

Chu Xingchen is the center of her loyalty. She comforts him, saves the best candied fruit for him, and wants to share his burdens rather than merely receive his protection. That devotion can override his instructions and other people’s safety, as shown by her secret intervention in the Western Ox-He Continent 109 378 583.

She values trust within the sect, but does not always live up to that ideal herself. Her concealed plans cause friction with Li Yingling, and she privately recognizes that she cannot be completely sincere even with those close to her 332 728 746.

She is also sentimental about familiar places and objects. The original courtyard’s stone table and chairs follow the sect through its relocations, and the later pool is built at her request 425.

Abilities & Skills

Emotional Perception

After awakening in Chu Xingchen’s care, Baiqing develops an instinctive ability to sense other people’s feelings toward her 74.

  • Distinguishes indifference, sympathy, goodwill, and possible hostile intent 74 76 81.
  • Uses it to assess whether visitors might threaten her master 81.
  • Detects emotions only roughly; Chu Xingchen is the sole person she consistently cannot read 81.

Heaven-Shrouding Art

Her system-provided divine ability supports sophisticated illusions and dream-related applications. Its depth remains challenging even though it suits her exceptionally well 147 389.

  • Flowers in the Mirror, Moon on the Water: Displays events inside the Wild Ox Demon’s dream through a water curtain 147.
  • Disguise: Maintains an ordinary-looking appearance during her independent travels 387.
  • Scene reconstruction: Reproduces a remembered ritual and later an encounter, including its spiritual-power fluctuations and characteristics 250 392.

Natal Bewilderment Ability

Baiqing possesses an innate capacity to deceive spiritual power. Following her trait upgrade, she senses her Natal Divine Ability moving beyond a mere technique toward an ability bordering on rules 246 593.

  • Can deceive spiritual power, but this does not automatically prevent others from detecting her own spiritual power 246.
  • Makes two fighting Foundation Establishment beasts become docile and sit obediently 390.
  • Her later illusion methods allow her to threaten opponents above her cultivation realm 685 686.
