Background / History
Accepting Xia Yu
Su Deyu accepted Xia Yu as his final direct disciple, valuing his talent and ruthlessness. With Xia Yu’s addition, he had three disciples: Su Xiang’er, Shen Yuxuan, and Xia Yu 31 35 38.
When Qi Huang prepared to kill Xia Yu, Su Deyu intercepted his disciple’s punch and ordered Shen Yuxuan to take him away. He then confronted Qi Huang and Yuan Pingtian, insisting that the Martial Saint Academy obey the rules restricting interference in conflicts between juniors 31.
At the Dao-Seeking Academy, he partially suppressed Xia Yao’s dangerous water-and-fire powers and summoned Lin Xulun to examine her. He also agreed to care for her while Xia Yu demonstrated his alchemy 32 33.
The Pill Academy and the Treasury
Su Deyu initially mistook Lin Xulun’s demand to see him for anger over Xia Yu’s misconduct. He offered compensation, tea, an apology from Xia Yu, and eventually his own services to protect his disciple. Instead, Lin Xulun wanted Xia Yu as his alchemy teacher. Su Deyu agreed, distinguishing Xia Yu’s position as a Martial Academy disciple from his separate role as a Pill Academy teacher 34 35.
He saw Xia Yu’s martial talent, alchemy, and connection with Seventh Princess An Qing as an opportunity to restore the declining academy. To strengthen their master–disciple bond, he assembled a mountain of spirit stones—including borrowed stones—and invited Xia Yu to take as many as he could carry 33 36.
Xia Yu absorbed all one million low-grade spirit stones and advanced twelve minor stages in fifteen minutes. After checking that his disciple really was human, a shaken Su Deyu refused to let him inspect further treasures, denying that he had promised additional treasury access 36 37.
Open Conflict with the Martial Saint Academy
Su Deyu permitted Xia Yu’s duel with Xu Weilin but promised to act if the Martial Saint Academy broke the rules. When Xu Weilin’s Gravity Domain placed Xia Yu in mortal danger, he declared surrender and attempted a rescue; Zhang Xinyi and arriving reinforcements blocked him 41 42 44.
After Xia Yu killed Xu Weilin, Su Deyu countered Zhang Xinyi’s attack with the Dao-Seeking Fist. He then fought Zhang Xinyi and Yuan Pingtian together, exposing his concealed Half-Step Sage strength. When elders attacked Xia Yu, he drew his longsword and forced both opponents back 44 45.
An Youguo’s intervention ended the battle. The revelation of Su Deyu’s strength challenged the academy members’ longstanding belief that their director was merely cowardly and submissive toward the Martial Saint Academy 46.
Guiding Xia Yu’s Cultivation
After the battle, Su Deyu directed Xia Yu toward a Secret Realm due to open in three months and the academy’s extensive library as possible sources of a cure for Xia Yao. He also emphasized reading, comprehension, and the refinement of one’s will 46.
He arranged Xia Yu’s access to the Sacred Bone Slips, identified his inheritance as Finger Saint Zangtiange’s Mystic Heaven Art and Mystic Heaven Finger, and secretly watched over his dangerous training. During Xia Yu’s seclusion, he prohibited further challenges after Su Xiang’er and Shen Yuxuan were injured 49 50.
Personality
Su Deyu is protective but pragmatic. He is willing to plead, offer compensation, and shoulder responsibility for Xia Yu’s presumed mistakes, yet also threatens retaliation when rival elders disregard the rules. His apparent willingness to yield masks considerable strength 31 34 35 41 46.
He cares about the academy’s recovery and deliberately cultivates Xia Yu’s loyalty. His generosity has limits: losing the entire spirit-stone stockpile leaves him regretting the gift and guarding the remaining treasury. Despite his experience and generally steady temperament, Xia Yu’s abnormal cultivation repeatedly unsettles him 36 37 49.
