Before he knew it, more than two hours had passed and Zhang Zhonghua came over to take the watch.
Zhang Zhonghua glanced at the wristwatch on his arm. "It's been over two hours, why didn't you wake me?"
Lin Shan smiled. "I'm not sleepy yet."
"You still need to rest even if you aren't sleepy, we don't know what will happen tomorrow. Hurry up and go to sleep," Zhang Zhonghua urged.
"All right, then I'll go to sleep. Call me if anything comes up," Lin Shan replied.
Zhang Zhonghua nodded. "Mm, go ahead."
Lin Shan casually found a tree, leaned against its side, and closed his eyes to sleep. When he opened them again, it was already early morning. The rising sun dyed the horizon a fiery red, and the previously blood-red full moon had vanished.
The sun in this different world was very similar to the one on Earth, equally scorching, and the only difference was perhaps that it was a size larger than Earth's sun.
Zhang Zhonghua's voice could be heard from afar.
"Staying on the ground all the time is not a solution. Today we need to make some stone tools to cut down trees and build wooden houses. It's best to check if there are metal veins around; stone tools are not only unendurable but also low in efficiency."
Jin Tianzong chimed in. "I'm familiar with this, I used to be in this industry. You guys go find the ore, and in a while I'll pile up some mud to make a blast furnace. Even if there's no iron ore, pounding stone will work, at least cutting down trees won't be a problem."
For the sake of survival, the group started working enthusiastically. With their knowledge, these things were not difficult. As long as they had materials, they could throw all this together.
"Crack!"
"Boom."
It took over ten minutes to chop down a tree, and the stone knife in his hand was already pitted and scarred. Ever since he woke up last night, he had discovered that his strength had multiplied several times, and he felt as if three or five big men coming at him together would not be his match.
First he scraped the resin clean from the top of the tree, then proceeded with further dismemberment.
This kind of tree was somewhat like a locust tree, secreting a lot of resin on the surface. This was good stuff; not only could it be made into simple glue, but it was also indispensable fuel for making torches.
"Lin Shan, drink some water." At this moment, Zhao Xiao An and that young woman named Huang Ying carried over a 'stone pot'. Looking at its crooked shape, no one dared to say it was a pot, but Jin Tianzong truly lived up to being an 'expert' as he had ground out two stone knives and chiseled out such a 'pot' in a single morning.
Lin Shan took the leaf handed over by Huang Ying, rolled up the leaf, and scooped water from the stone pot to drink.
"Tsk tsk~" He clicked his tongue and smiled. "I never would have imagined there would come a day when even drinking boiled water would be a luxury."
"Pfft." Zhao Xiao An let out a soft snort of laughter and said, "It'll slowly get better. I heard that people over there also found a metal deposit, it'll get better and better in the future."
"Roar!"
A loud, resonant beast roar came from afar.
"Beasts?" Instead of being alarmed, Lin Shan was pleased. Having beasts in this world was a good thing in a sense, at least they could finally have some meat in the days ahead.
"I'll go take a look." With that, he grabbed his battered stone knife and sprinted in the direction of the roar.
"Be careful, it could also be..." Zhao Xiao An shouted from behind.
"I know. I'll just look from afar, and I can notify you guys in time if anything happens."
Lin Shan interrupted before Zhao Xiao An could finish her sentence.
He knew that it might not be a beast, and perhaps it was some kind of transcendence creature, but cowardice was useless. If he wanted to survive better, he definitely needed to understand more about this world.
Five minutes later.
Behind an earthen slope, Lin Shan pressed tightly against the side, his expression tense.
He took a deep breath to calm his mood, and continued watching the fierce battle not far away.
A miraculous deer and a ferocious black tiger were fighting!
Every time the divine deer stamped the ground, it gouged out a small pit. When its front hooves kicked the black tiger, it sent the tiger flying more than ten meters away, smashing and breaking small trees in its path right down the middle.
The black tiger was no pushover either; every bite tore a chunk of flesh and blood from the divine deer, and its sharp claws left the divine deer covered in wounds deep enough to see bone.
Both sides were already a bloody mess, yet they still stood firmly, emanating an imposing majesty. Merely their momentum made it somewhat difficult for Lin Shan to breathe.
Damn it, are there really no normal beasts in this world! Another transcendence creature, and two of them showing up at once. Lin Shan inwardly cursed his bad luck.
He had thought they were ordinary beasts, and with his current physical fitness, he could hunt one down to have meat for lunch, but he never expected that he would end up serving as takeout himself.
After undergoing a brutal engagement, the divine deer gradually gained the upper hand. Lin Shan watched anxiously from the side; in fact, the black tiger had the edge when it came to sheer attack power, which could be seen from the injuries, but the divine deer's regenerative ability was much stronger. Its wounds kept healing at a speed visible to the naked eye, and as time dragged on, the black tiger grew increasingly weak while the divine deer remained full of vigor.
Finally, with an earth-shattering stomp from the divine deer that dug a one-meter-deep crater into the ground, the black tiger lay in the pit, mangled and devoid of any breath of life.
The next second, an event occurred that made Lin Shan's jaw drop.
He saw that divine deer's entire body flash with grey light, and moments later it actually transformed into human form! It was a small girl, dressed in green robes, who looked to be only seventeen or eighteen years old.
The peculiar thing was that deer antlers actually grew from the top of her head, and a cat's tail grew behind her, making it impossible for people to tell whether she was human, deer, or cat.
She hoisted the black tiger on her back and prepared to leave, when suddenly she sniffed the air.
"Meow!"
A crisp cat meow arrived, confirming it-she was a cat.
"Meow?"
Another meow sounded, soft and sweet, only this time it rang out right beside his ear.
Lin Shan mechanically turned his head. The young girl's nose was practically touching his, revealing clear and flexible large eyes with dark pupils that emitted a faint green glow.
"Holy crap!"
Scared out of his wits, Lin Shan spun around and bolted. He had been too caught up in watching the show, forgetting that whichever side won would spell trouble for him.
Now it was too late to run, as the cat-woman hoisted Lin Shan up with a single hand.
She looked at Lin Shan, her face showing confusion.
"You're a new race?"
"No wonder the Ash Fog around this area was dispersed."
"Huh?"
Lin Shan blinked, unable to understand a single word.
Although he could not understand what the cat-girl was saying, her willingness to communicate with him at least indicated that she was a civilized cat, not a beast, and his tense heart immediately relaxed a little.
Taking a deep breath, Lin Shan turned his head toward the cat-woman and said earnestly, "Meow meow? Meow meow meow?"
The cat-woman jumped in surprise and loosened her grip, causing Lin Shan to have an intimate, face-first encounter with the ground.
"Are you also of the feline tribe?"
"Why do you not have a tail?"
Lin Shan rubbed his face in utter helplessness. Communication was completely impossible, but fortunately, the other party bore no hostility.
The cat-woman also seemed to realize that communication was impossible and gave up on continuing to converse with Lin Shan, carrying the black tiger on her back and vanishing from Lin Shan's sight in a few bounding leaps.
"Just like that?" Lin Shan found it hard to believe, but the fact was right before his eyes.
With a wry smile and a shake of his head, he headed back the way he came. He had to share this news, which could practically be called discovering a new continent, with the others.
