Background / History

Spirit Hall Grudge

Six years before meeting Li Fei, Dugu Bo became a Titled Douluo and refused Spirit Hall’s recruitment because he did not want to surrender his freedom. Chrysanthemum Douluo fought and seriously injured him. While recovering at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, Dugu Bo missed the outbreak of poison in his son’s body and failed to return in time to save him. He associates that loss with Spirit Hall and retains a personal grudge against Chrysanthemum Douluo 52 56.

Meeting Li Fei

Dugu Bo observes Li Fei fighting a twenty-thousand-year Ghost Tiger and questions how someone apparently possessing only three Spirit Rings can match it. When Li Fei identifies himself as connected to Spirit Hall, Dugu Bo reacts with lethal Soul Power pressure, crushing his bones and poisoning him. He stops only after Li Fei claims he can cure both Dugu Bo and his granddaughter 50.

He removes Li Fei’s poison and attempts to treat his injuries, initially continuing to threaten him. Their relationship improves as Li Fei proposes storing Dugu Bo’s internal toxins in soul bones and creates a Soul Tool microscope for his research. Dugu Bo values the microscope enough to allow Li Fei to take herbs from the well, provided he does not destroy it 51 52.

Mentorship and Dugu Yan’s Treatment

She Long and Pufferfish Douluo confront Dugu Bo while investigating Li Fei’s disappearance. Their Martial Souls counter his serpent and poison, leaving him seriously injured after only a few exchanges. Li Fei stops the battle and urges him to resume detoxification rather than devote all his attention to poison research 53.

Dugu Bo then brings Dugu Yan to the well and refines seven Blood Ginseng Pills from Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng roots. Taken before her awakening, they help her Martial Soul develop into a Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor and give her Innate Full Soul Power. He also obtains Whale Rubber during a later trip to Vast Sea City, reserving the oldest piece for her 54 55 95.

During more than two years together, Dugu Bo teaches Li Fei cultivation, combat judgment, and pharmaceutical knowledge. Li Fei comes to regard him as an elder, while Dugu Bo conceals his reluctance when the boy returns to Heaven Dou Royal Academy 55 63.

Body Sect and Later Cultivation

Dugu Bo accepts a guest elder position in Li Fei’s proposed Body Sect, partly because he believes Li Fei can protect Dugu Yan in the future. When Li Fei enters seclusion, Dugu Bo guards the sect and kills infiltrators, including a Soul Saint. His presence publicly establishes the sect’s connection to a Titled Douluo 61 104.

Their support eventually becomes reciprocal: Li Fei helps purify Dugu Bo’s body with divine power and later shares advanced cultivation insights when he stalls at level 96. Dugu Bo accepts them and resumes training with renewed hopes of reaching higher realms 135 152.

Appearance

  • Before detoxification: Sunken cheeks, a skull-like face, and messy green hair 56.
  • During treatment: His face becomes fuller, and roughly half his hair returns to black. Dugu Yan combs it for him 56.
  • After absorbing the Blood Swan Kiss: Completely black hair and a full, healthy physique replace his formerly gaunt appearance 100.

Personality

Dugu Bo is solitary, suspicious of coercion, and fiercely protective of his independence. His initial hostility toward Li Fei reflects both his resentment of Spirit Hall and his fear of another attempt to bind him to an organization. He also expresses little attachment to the Heaven Dou Empire, preferring freedom and a peaceful life with Dugu Yan 50 52 56.

His granddaughter receives an openly affectionate side rarely shown to others. He smiles warmly around her, plans her future cultivation, and repeatedly punishes Li Fei after she complains about him. His protectiveness can become outright indulgence: Li Fei observes that whatever Dugu Yan says goes 54 55.

With trusted companions, his harsh manner gives way to teasing, generosity, and concern. He trades insults with Li Fei, gives away valuable possessions without hesitation, and worries over dangerous experiments and injuries. He is also an obsessive researcher, studying toxins with his microscope until he forgets to eat or sleep 52 56 90 100.

Abilities & Skills

Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor

  • Seventh Soul Skill — Martial Soul Avatar: Manifests a serpent approximately thirty meters long, capable of binding and crushing a large Soul Beast 59.
  • Fifth Soul Skill — Poisonous Impact: Fires a jade-green beam of serpent venom that envelops its target; it corrodes much of the Fire Spirit Sacred Beast’s fur 59.
  • Other applications: Produces poison blades, poisonous rays, and physical constriction attacks 55 100.
  • Limits: The Fire Spirit Sacred Beast’s golden flames melt many of the avatar’s scales, forcing it to release the beast 59.

Poison Arts and Defensive Arrays

  • Maintains a poison formation around the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well; its original version can deal with Soul Masters below Soul Saint 56.
  • Strengthens the formation with additional poisonous herbs, mixed toxins, and Blood Swan Kiss fragments. He states that only he and people carrying the proper antidote can enter 56.
  • The upgraded mist corrodes Jiang Mo’s protective Soul Power on contact 90.
  • Uses microscopic observation to study the Blood Swan Kiss before attempting to absorb it. Even a tiny sample demonstrates its dangerous amplification of serpent venom 53.

Medicine and Research

  • Removes poison from Li Fei and prepares treatments for severe injuries 51 90 91.
  • Refines pills that allow young Dugu Yan to remain temporarily in the well’s extreme spiritual environment 54.
  • Makes Blood Ginseng Pills mild enough for Dugu Yan to consume before her Martial Soul awakening 54 55.
  • Produces full-recovery pills, but their precious ingredients limit his supply; Li Fei receives only three 88.
  • Teaches pharmaceutical knowledge alongside cultivation 63.

Combat Experience and Instruction

  • Identifies Li Fei’s inadequate judgment of combat distance and teaches him through sustained sparring 55.
  • Uses unexpected moves to disrupt Li Fei’s rhythm even when the younger fighter has superior melee technique 101.
  • Can overwhelm a lower-ranked opponent with Soul Power pressure; his first attack leaves Li Fei unable to move or breathe 50.
  • Limitations: Poison immunity sharply reduces the effectiveness of his offensive skills. Against the newly advanced Soul Saint Li Fei, his avatar’s venom and constriction both fail 100.
  • Matchup weaknesses: She Long’s Snake Lance restrains his serpent, while Pufferfish Douluo absorbs the poison formation’s gas 53.

Medusa’s Gaze

  • A skill provided by the Medusa Skull soul bone 100.
  • Dugu Bo considers it potentially useful against poison-immune Li Fei but refrains from using it during their friendly spar 100.
  • Its precise effect is not described in the provided passages.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Medusa Skull soul bone — Receives the poison redirected from his body and provides Medusa’s Gaze 55 100.
  • Two additional soul bones — Absorbed to alleviate the burden of amplified poison after his existing soul bones reach their limit; both are of comparatively lower age 135.
  • Soul Tool microscope — Made by Li Fei; becomes his principal instrument for studying toxins and medicinal effects 51 52.
  • Blood Swan Kiss — Fully absorbed by Chapter 100. Its toxin-amplifying properties greatly strengthen his poison but create renewed strain on his body 100 135.
  • Ruyi Treasure Sack — A storage Soul Tool capable of holding living things; given to Li Fei 52.
  • Swift Windchaser Speed Leg Bone — Accepted from Li Fei to spare him the effort of finding a suitable soul bone for Dugu Yan 60.
  • Defensive Soul Tools — Receives a set from Li Fei and later requests another suited to Dugu Yan 104.
  • Deep Sleep technique — Receives Li Fei’s written cultivation method after guarding the Body Sect 105.

Relationships

  • Dugu Yan — Granddaughter and foremost personal priority. He supports her Martial Soul evolution, obtains Whale Rubber for her, and joins the Body Sect partly to secure her future safety 55 61 95.
  • Li Fei — Initially a nearly murdered captive, later a friend, student, and elder–junior companion. Dugu Bo supplies medicine, guidance, and access to immortal herbs; Li Fei returns that kindness through research assistance and advanced cultivation knowledge 50 52 63 152.
  • His unnamed son — Dies from a poison outbreak while Dugu Bo is recovering from Chrysanthemum Douluo’s attack. Dugu Bo recounts the loss with sorrow and regret 52.
  • Chrysanthemum Douluo — Personal enemy whose recruitment attempt and subsequent attack underpin Dugu Bo’s resentment toward Spirit Hall 52 56.
  • She Long and Pufferfish Douluo — Spirit Hall elders who nearly defeat him during their search for Li Fei. Their Martial Souls are particularly unfavorable matchups for his abilities 53.
  • Qian Renxue — Initially orders an investigation into him over Li Fei’s disappearance. Later thanks him for mentoring Li Fei and entrusts the injured Li Fei to his care 53 69 90.
