The brutal retreat began.
Mars, a group of politicians, and technicians raced toward Tunnel Five at the outermost edge of the Underground City, surrounded by the most elite special forces soldiers.
When their bullets ran out, the soldiers drew their combat knives and fought hand to hand.
When their defensive line broke, they detonated the grenades they carried for their final stand, taking the Lesser Demons lunging at them down with them.
Even dust could hide sparks. Unfortunately, under the crushing weight of absolute power, those sparks could never set a prairie ablaze. They were instantly swallowed by the black tide of the Demon Clan.
Mars did not look back once. He knew that if he stopped, he would never get away.
The group finally charged into the entrance to Tunnel Five.
"Blow the entrance!" he roared as he jumped into an off-road vehicle.
Boom!
With a tremendous blast, tons of explosives planted at the tunnel mouth detonated. Thousands of tons of shattered rock collapsed, sealing the entrance completely.
They formed a barrier fifty meters thick.
They were safe for the moment.
Mars slumped in the back seat, gasping for breath, his entire body drenched in cold sweat.
The convoy tore through the narrow, dark tunnel, the roar of its engines echoing between the rock walls.
"Construction Team! How much farther?!" Mars picked up the vehicle's radio.
A burst of static and the frantic noise of excavators came through the radio:
"S-sir! We've run into trouble!"
"The last sixty meters are high-density granite! All the boring machine's drill bits have shattered!"
"I don't care what you have to do! If the drill bits are broken, blast it open with explosives!"
"But sir, forcing our way through with explosives is extremely likely to cause a total collapse. We'll..."
