Background / History
The Demon Clan invaded the Terra Continent from another world. Fendona describes its members as enemies of every living being on the continent, while her account characterizes them as plunderers that consume territory like a swarm of locusts. By the time Lin Mo learns about the war, less than thirty percent of the continent remains unconsumed 5 7.
The conflict has lasted centuries and reduced the Elf population by eighty percent. Queen Ellari explains that the invaders strengthen themselves with captured resources while their opponents steadily lose territory, supplies, and soldiers. Every adult Elf is required to serve on the battlefield 41.
Two years before Ellari’s negotiations with Lin Mo, the Demon Clan captured Emerald Leaf City. It subsequently turned the city into a forward base for attacks on the Elven heartland, mined and transported large quantities of ore, and inflicted suffering on the local World Tree 46.
Military Forces
The army combines expendable charging creatures, armored infantry, spellcasters, flying attackers, and specialized siege beasts. Its first assault witnessed by Lin Mo numbers in the tens of thousands 5.
| Unit | Description | Battlefield role |
|---|---|---|
| Minotaur Demons | Several meters tall and armed with massive axes 5. | Part of the advancing ground army 5. |
| Lesser Demon Hounds | Swift creatures running on all fours 5. | Fast-moving ground attackers 5. |
| Flying demons | One encountered by Lin Mo has a wingspan exceeding five meters, scarlet eyes, and hooked claws 6. | Aerial penetration and diving attacks 6. |
| Unnamed hellfire monster | A hill-sized creature covered in hellfire 6. | Launches a dark-red fireball more than ten meters across against the treant defenses 6. |
| Earth Python | Eyeless, python-like beast more than one hundred feet long, with rotating rings of teeth filling its circular mouth 24. | Grinds through rock and World Tree roots to open an invasion tunnel 24. |
| Heavy Armor Demon Soldiers | Over three and a half meters tall, with muscular gray-green bodies and thick bone shields bearing dark-red magical markings 25. | Lead assaults and protect vulnerable units 25 26. |
| Liches | Demon spellcasters identified by Leon as at least tier four 25. | Create barriers that block the vast majority of incoming magic 25. |
| Corroders | Large beetle-like monsters with swelling growths on their backs 25 26. | Mobile artillery firing corrosive beams against treants and elevated sharpshooters 25 26. |
| Tower-Shield Demon Soldiers | Escorts that attach layers of corpses to their shields using foul-smelling slime 26. | Shield Corroders from enchanted armor-piercing arrows 26. |
Abilities & Skills
Mass Assaults and Tactical Coordination
- Human-wave attacks: Fallen creatures are immediately replaced by those advancing behind them. Troops trample their own dead and continue charging despite heavy losses 5.
- Coordinated breaches: During the second Lothia assault, troops deliberately gather near a hillside and clear space for the Earth Python rather than charging indiscriminately 24.
- Adaptive protection: Corpse-covered tower shields absorb enough arrow energy to stop shots that previously pierced ordinary bone shields 25 26.
- Threat prioritization: Corroders redirect their fire from the ground defenses to the canopy sharpshooters once the new bows become a major threat 26.
- Organized retreat: The army sounds a withdrawal horn and escapes through its tunnel after losing its artillery and armored troops 27.
Magic and Ranged Attacks
- Ranged arsenal: Demonic forces fire corrosive acid, shadow arrows, and chaos fireballs at the Elven defensive line 5.
- Lich barriers: These protect the tunnel mouth and the surrounding hundred meters. Physical projectiles can pass through even when most spells cannot 25.
- Siege-beast resistance: Hundreds of spells initially fail to penetrate the Earth Python’s defenses, though a subsequent concentrated volley kills it 25.
- Limited counters: Holy power naturally counters the Demon Clan. Earth magic is described as doing little direct damage, but remains effective for disrupting the ground beneath its formations 7 26.
Corroder Artillery
- Destructive effect: Acid beams dissolve treants, destroy an Elf guard’s arm, and sever branches supporting sharpshooters 25 26.
- Recharge interval: After firing, the growths on a Corroder’s back shrink and need roughly ten seconds to swell again 26.
- Defensive opening: Escorting soldiers briefly lower their shields while adjusting their stance during this recovery period 26.
- Danger to allies: Explosive arrows can rupture the swollen growths, spraying corrosive slime over nearby escorts. Disrupted Corroders also fire off course and strike their own troops 26.
Relationships
- Elves — Principal opponents in the documented battles. Lothia is their last defensive line before retreat to Avenor, and Emerald Leaf City is under demonic occupation 7 46.
- Holy Human Race — Its holy power counters demons, prompting especially severe attacks. Its surviving forces have been driven back almost entirely to their main city 7.
- Dwarves — Continue fighting the Demon Clan underground after sealing the gates of the Iron Fortress 7.
- Half-Orcs — Have suffered devastating losses and collapsing morale. Fendona reports that several powerful tribes are discussing joining the Demon Clan; no completed alliance is established 7.
- Lin Mo — Opposes the invasion by delivering Great Xia’s weapon designs and directing the successful defense of Lothia 18 24 26 27.
- Fendona — Commands Elven defenses against repeated attacks and works with Lin Mo to defeat the tunnel assault 5 24 26 27.
- Great Xia — Provides technological and strategic assistance to the Elves. Its leaders consider the Demon Clan a potential threat to Blue Star, but the supplied accounts do not establish that demons can reach it 13 43 50.
Story Role / Major Arcs
First Attack Witnessed by Lin Mo
- A war horn interrupts Lin Mo’s first conversation with Fendona and announces the invasion 4.
- The army attacks the living treant wall with massed ground troops, flying demons, and ranged magic. Fendona blocks the giant hellfire monster’s fireball with a water-based Guardian Barrier 5 6.
- An Elf archer kills a flying demon diving toward Lin Mo, but its falling body strikes him and knocks him unconscious 6.
- The demons withdraw temporarily. Fendona later reports losses of nearly thirty percent of the Elven warriors, severe equipment shortages, and her expectation that Lothia can withstand no more than two further attacks 7 15.
Tunnel Assault and Defeat at Lothia
- The next attack arrives at least two weeks earlier than Master Elder expects. Its vanguard breaches the first wooden wall while the Elves have only 550 new Compound Bows and 620 Repeating Crossbows available 24.
- An Earth Python tunnels into the city’s heartland. Although the Elves kill it, armored soldiers advance through the completed passage under a Lich’s barrier 24 25.
- The new weapons stop the initial advance, but shielded Corroders begin destroying the defenses and targeting the sharpshooters 25 26.
- Lin Mo times an earth-magic disruption to the artillery’s recovery window. Leon’s archers shoot through the resulting gaps and detonate the Corroders’ growths, collapsing the shield formation from within 26.
- Coordinated Elven fire pins the remaining army at the tunnel entrance and forces its retreat 27.
- The victory still costs 2,719 Elf lives, with 11,342 wounded, including more than three thousand severely wounded. Buried demon remains become nourishment for the World Tree 30.
Great Xia’s Intervention Plans
- Gathering intelligence on demonic abilities and the possibility of an invasion of Blue Star becomes one of Lin Mo’s three initial New Hope Plan priorities 13.
- Zhao Gang proposes industrial standardization, modern military training, and improved intelligence-gathering for the Elves. He judges these measures insufficient for lasting victory because of the Demon Clan’s overwhelming numbers, war-making capacity, and high-level combat power 43.
- Ellari makes the recapture of Emerald Leaf City a condition of cooperation. Lin Mo accepts, but initially explains that Great Xia cannot send troops and will instead provide military support and advice 46.
- Later discussions of a portal raise the danger of demons crossing back into Great Xia. Its leaders nevertheless decide to pursue assistance while presenting their involvement as mercenary-like support rather than territorial expansion 50.
