Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Ordinary human 1 11 17 Begins without demonstrated physical superpowers. Relies on company equipment, preparation, and deliberate exposure to bloodshed to ready himself for combat.
Awakened — Light and Dark, Twin Aspects; A-rank strength and speed 33 34 Absorbs a rainbow-colored sphere from a Flesh Ball found behind a zombie’s heart. After losing consciousness and developing a fever, awakens with light-dependent physical enhancements. Subsequent testing establishes strength, defense, and recovery advantages in bright light, and speed, agility, and endurance advantages in darkness.

Background / History

Su Jin worked in a corporate job until he beat up Mr. Wang for harassing Xiao Jing. His employer, Old Li, offered to reinstate him if he apologized. Su Jin briefly pretended to accept, then insulted Wang over the phone and hung up, choosing his conscience over the job 1.

While searching for work, he accepted a mysterious recommendation on his computer. A package subsequently arrived containing a transparent mask, a black briefcase, and a silver handgun. Its notice identified Heavenly Dao Liability Unlimited Company and ordered him to protect a client in a dying world; failure would leave him stranded there 1.

Before departure, Su Jin bought supplies, arranged money and life insurance for his parents, and told them he would be working overtime for months. The mask placed a countdown in his vision. When it expired, a golden portal moved forward and swallowed him before he could decide whether to enter 2.

Personality

Su Jin combines a strong conscience with abrasive humor and considerable social cunning. He refuses to apologize for defending Xiao Jing, but readily invents identities, exaggerates his connections, and manipulates other people when he believes deception will secure cooperation. His expensive-phone presentation wins over Ding Jia, while his fabricated government credentials persuade Fu Hu to admit him into the family home 1 7 13.

His confidence does not make him fearless. Before the apocalypse, he experiences homesickness, nightmares, nausea, and intense anxiety. He responds by making detailed plans and forcing himself to practice slaughtering animals rather than assuming he will remain composed in real combat 11 16 17.

The apocalypse makes him increasingly ruthless without eliminating his concern for others. He threatens Fu Qingdai to force Fu Hu to cooperate, later explaining that he never intended to hurt them. When unable to identify a disguised infected person among two suspects, he kills both. Sun Ya admires his adaptability but warns that someone like him could become a tyrant; Su Jin rejects that future for himself 27 40.

Abilities & Skills

Light and Dark, Twin Aspects

A passive superpower that changes Su Jin’s physical capabilities according to illumination rather than through consciously directed energy 34 45.

Conditions Advantages Limits
Bright light Greatly enhanced strength, physical defense, and recovery; powerful bursts of speed Explosive movement consumes substantial stamina 34.
Dim light or darkness Enhanced speed, agility, and sustained endurance Strength and recovery remain average compared with his light-focused state 34.
  • Runs sideways along a wall, jumps high enough to touch a ceiling, and traverses stairwell landings with midair changes of direction 33 34.
  • Kills a lunging zombie cat with a single kick in sunlight 34.
  • Uses enhanced agility to evade a child zombie’s surprise attack in a dim apartment 37.
  • Sunlight rapidly relieves his fatigue and hangover headache 41.

Infection Resistance and Cold Tolerance

Following his awakening, Su Jin survives exposure to zombie bodily fluids without developing infection and withstands extreme cold without feeling chilled 34.

  • Remains unaffected after a zombie cat’s blood and bodily contents splatter over him; he isolates himself overnight before returning to the group 34.
  • Feels no cold while wearing only a long-sleeved shirt on his upper body at approximately −20 to −30°C 34.
  • His demonstrated resistance allows him to dissect zombie corpses with far less concern about infection 36.

Gray-Mist Perception

Su Jin can see the infectious substance in its initial form as gray mist, providing observations unavailable to the group’s researchers 30 31.

  • Reports that the substance disperses without water and dissipates after roughly five days 30.
  • Sorts contaminated water by visible concentration and creates a grayscale reference chart for Sun Ya and Wei De’s experiments 31.
  • Limitation: Once the substance infects a living organism, he can no longer see signs of its presence. This perception cannot identify disguised infected people 30.

Combat and Dissection

Su Jin develops practical combat skills through repeated encounters rather than beginning as a trained firearms user 29 37.

  • Learns shotgun operation from Sun Ya before clearing zombies outside the building 29.
  • Identifies the heart as a zombie weak point through experiments and examination of corpses 24 28.
  • Believes he can reliably hit a zombie’s heart within five meters, despite limited gun experience 37.
  • Becomes proficient at extracting hearts and searching for Flesh Balls; repeated work eventually desensitizes him to gore 36 44 45.
  • Restrains and equips a live zombie as a controlled training target for Fu Qingdai and Fu Hu 44.

Planning, Deception, and Leadership

Su Jin builds a survivor team by combining advance preparation, selective recruitment, and the expertise of other residents 13 27 43.

  • Stockpiles food, water, medicine, and sanitation supplies; reinforces windows and barricades the stairwell 13 20 21.
  • Uses Fu Qingdai’s knowledge of her father to sustain a fabricated National Strategic Risk Bureau identity 7 13.
  • Assigns research, sewing, physical training, resident registration, and supply-distribution work according to the group’s skills 31 44.
  • Hunts Flesh Balls to awaken Cheng Du and Fu Hu before taking them on the medical-university expedition 43 44 45.
  • Insists that survival requires recruiting others and sharing the burden, despite the danger posed by disguised infected people 40 46.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Silver Spear — A company-issued silver handgun, despite its name. Holds nine rounds and automatically reloads after half an hour once emptied. Bound to Su Jin; Fu Qingdai cannot pull its trigger 1 28 41.
  • Spatial Briefcase — Company-issued storage with an independent interior space. Food retains warmth inside but can still go stale. Fu Qingdai cannot access its contents 2 12 41.
  • Transparent mask — Vanishes against his skin when worn. Provides visual countdowns and company notifications; Su Jin credits it with barrier-free translation and company communication 2 23 24.
  • First-aid suppository — Received in exchange for a dead infected rat. Automatically releases emergency medication when body temperature falls and can be reused until depleted. Its instructions warn against opening the casing or swallowing the medicine 24.
  • Shotgun and melee weapons — Uses Sun Ya’s shotgun, a machete, and an extra-long screwdriver for zombie combat 29 44.
  • Protective clothing — Wears improvised armor, gloves, and a motorcycle helmet; commissions improved clothing with aluminum inserts from Zhang Wan 29 31.
  • Compound bows and solar equipment — Has Fu Hu obtain 50-, 70-, and 90-pound compound bows, penetrating hunting arrows, and a solar setup before the apocalypse 18 20.
  • Xiaomi Mi 6 — Uses its unfamiliar technology to impress Ding Jia and displays a fabricated identification image on it to Fu Hu 7 13.
  • Earth chocolate — Poisonous to people in the destination world, while local chocolate poisons Su Jin. He uses the cross-world toxicity against the two infection suspects and later gives chocolate to Fu Qingdai after discovering she cannot use his handgun 20 40 41.
  • Bolas — The expedition carries more than twenty stone-weighted ropes intended to entangle zombies’ legs 46.

Relationships

  • Fu Qingdai — His assigned client and central protective responsibility. He initially poses as her cousin and an alien rescuer, then comes to admire her resilience and preparation. She trusts him with her prophetic notebooks and repeatedly seeks comfort from him 6 7 21 30.
  • Fu Hu — Fu Qingdai’s father and a core teammate. Initially deceived by Su Jin’s “Director Li” persona, he later cooperates in defending the family and joins the expedition after Su Jin helps him awaken a hardening ability 13 27 45 46.
  • Zhang Wan — Fu Qingdai’s mother. Su Jin promises to protect her alongside her family and relies on her sewing skills to make protective clothing 7 31.
  • Sun Ya — Researcher, firearms instructor, and adviser. Studies infection and Flesh Balls with Su Jin, recognizes him as the group’s leader, and openly questions the moral consequences of his ruthlessness 29 33 40.
  • Wei De — Research and weapons specialist. Helps plan the medical-university expedition and infected-person detection experiment; Su Jin insists on collecting his heart medication along the route 32 38 41 43.
  • Cheng Du — Teammate whom Su Jin helps awaken fire powers. Joins Su Jin and Fu Hu on the expedition; Sun Ya cautions Su Jin to keep his rashness in check 44 45 46.
  • Heavenly Dao Liability Unlimited Company — His supernatural employer and means of returning home. Its limited assistance repeatedly frustrates him, eventually prompting a private resolve to survive and take revenge on whoever sent him 1 8 23 40.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Preparing Fu Qingdai’s Family

Su Jin locates Fu Qingdai at Longshan City Psychiatric Hospital and invents a story about Namekians fighting a Trisolaran virus to secure her cooperation. He persuades Ding Jia to support her discharge, rents apartments near the Fu family, and uses a government-agent cover to gain her parents’ trust 4 6 7 10 13.

With the apocalypse approaching, he gathers supplies, obtains weapons through Fu Hu, and rehearses violence at a slaughterhouse. On the final night, he and Fu Qingdai seal neighboring locks, reinforce doors, and prepare her family’s supplies. A Purple Rift and torrential rain mark the disaster’s arrival at 3:15:42 a.m. 17 18 20 21.

Government Collapse and Survivor Organization

Su Jin initially expects the military to rescue them. The termination of city services and the Cold-Sky missile strike destroy that hope. After unsuccessfully trying to save a mother and baby from zombies, he breaks down before reaffirming his responsibility to Fu Qingdai 19 25.

He then forces Fu Hu to confront the danger and begins recruiting residents. Sun Ya and Wei De give the group scientific and weapons expertise, while Su Jin clears zombies and supplies specimens for research 27 28 29 30.

Awakening and the Disguised-Infected Crisis

A dissection leads to Su Jin’s accidental absorption of a Flesh Ball’s inner sphere and his awakening. He subsequently searches other corpses for the same resource, finding that Flesh Balls are rare 33 34 36.

The discovery of a predatory mutant rat exposes a threat capable of hiding among ordinary creatures. When Li Fang is found dead and Su Jin cannot determine which of two men is infected, he poisons and shoots both. He and the researchers then pursue a detection method based on disguised mutants’ inability to restrain their urge to kill 39 40 41 42.

Medical-University Expedition

Su Jin plans a trip to Dragon Mountain Medical University to obtain materials for the detection experiment, with a stop for Wei De’s heart medication. Before departure, he helps Cheng Du and Fu Hu awaken, trains the group, and organizes resident supplies 43 44 45.

During the journey, he shoots an apparently helpless crying child and discovers that it is a zombie with sharp teeth and fresh blood in its mouth. He concludes that zombies themselves are developing intelligence and deception, further complicating the group’s survival strategy 46 50.
