As dawn approached, the rain still poured down. Fierce winds howled through the village, driving sheets of rain sideways against Xu Ye and Du Xianjun.
"Doctor Xu, where are we going?" Du Xianjun asked, struggling against the wind and rain.
Neither of them carried an umbrella or wore a raincoat. In a downpour like this, neither would have done any good.
"To the village entrance. There's an abandoned well there."
Xu Ye used spiritual energy to keep some of the rain off and walked along calmly, even finding time to straighten his top hat.
"'Never open the door alone' and 'Never lean on a railing when sitting alone' have already happened, so they probably won't happen again anytime soon. 'Never enter a temple in a group of three'-we can't get three people together right now, so the well is our only option. Hopefully, that Aberrant won't be too lazy to come out in this rain."
Du Xianjun shuddered at his words.
Every Awakened hoped to avoid encountering an Aberrant, yet this man seemed unable to wait.

Soon, they reached the village entrance. The villagers who had been dancing in the nearby graveyard were gone, and even the candles had been extinguished by the rain. An eerie chill hung over the graves.
Their gazes shifted.
And settled on the well.
Xu Ye grabbed Du Xianjun by the collar and looked straight down into it.
Strangely enough, despite the heavy rain, the well was dry and pitch-black. Through the darkness, the two of them seemed to make out an elderly figure at the bottom.
"Kind souls... please..." An eerie voice drifted up, but Xu Ye interrupted her before she could finish.
