Previous Life

Xu Ye originally lived in a world resembling modern Earth. He had congenital heart disease and died at eighteen, shortly before beginning college. He wanted to return to his parents, younger sister, friends, and the life he had lost 1.

His parents were ordinary workers whose finances were strained by his treatment. Unable to exercise normally or take part-time work, he felt indebted to his family; this experience shaped his later concern with money and employment benefits 9 17.

The Body’s Recorded Past

The original Xu Ye was a high school senior from Seaside City. According to the information Meng Chengfei reviewed, his family died in a contamination incident, his memories were erased, and authorities guided him to Night Spirit City. He then lived without recorded abnormalities for five years 7.

The memories available to Xu Ye instead described a house fire that killed his parents, younger sister, and four rescuers. The original owner tutored while attending school and gave his earnings to the rescuers’ surviving relatives. Xu Ye continued those payments after taking over the body 9 20. After learning about official memory alteration, he questioned whether the fire itself had been fabricated 39.

Doctor Chen’s Laboratory

Xu Ye awakened in the body of the sole survivor of an illegal human-experimentation laboratory. Its occupants had committed mass suicide, and all experimental data had been deleted. His recovered memories included Doctor Chen telling him, “Everyone will die, except you” 1.

Sky City suspected contamination and subjected him to dangerous tests. Doctor Chen’s note identifying him as “the light” influenced Meng Chengfei’s decision to protect him 1 7. Xu Ye suspected Chen was connected to his transmigration, but Meng withheld the laboratory’s secrets 8.

Appearance

• Normal appearance: Pale face, sharply defined features, and black pupils; initially wears linen clothes 1.

Personality

Xu Ye prioritizes survival over appearances. He uses feigned weakness, embarrassing remarks, and public disturbances to escape stronger opponents rather than accept a hopeless fight. His apparent last stand against an Eternal Church bishop is deliberately staged to create an opening for escape 4 50.

His irreverent humor also serves practical purposes. Absurd stories interrupt Li Kang’s deteriorating mental state, while deliberately dreadful singing breaks a lethal mountain illusion. He regularly trades insults with Alice and provokes enemies into revealing their abilities 11 14 26 27.

Despite his caution, he accepts serious risks for others. He charges a vastly stronger Aberrant to save his team, frees Zhou Ye during the battle, and stops Wang Yong from being killed after realizing he is not the Pollution Source 16 17 35. His responsibility toward the dead rescuers’ families contrasts with his ruthless treatment of people who try to kill him: he continues financial support to the former and refuses Andre’s attempted settlement before killing him 20 42.

His fixation on money stems from hardship rather than simple greed. On receiving his first assignment, he asks about salary, ammunition reimbursement, meals, transport, insurance, and housing allowances 9. He is also academically accomplished, stating that he ranks first in his year on every examination 38.

Heart Simulation

Xu Ye’s heart stops beating and writhes while generating first-person accounts of possible futures. These accounts can include deaths, hidden dangers, and investigative clues 1 13.

• Automatic warnings: Activates when his life is threatened, revealing dangers such as a fatal elevator encounter or an impending ambush 1 11 13.
• Directed simulation: Can simulate a proposed action, allowing him to compare approaches or locate a concealed contamination source 13 16 46.
• Changeable outcomes: Shows possible futures rather than unavoidable events; Xu Ye acts on its information to avert predicted disasters 31 35.

9-003: Soul-Seizing

Alice possesses this high-ranking divine sequence. Xu Ye can use its abilities through cooperation with her without necessarily surrendering control of his body 7 12 16 17.

• Soul consumption: Alice devours souls to increase her strength and retrieve brief memories from shortly before death 12.
• Memory sharing: Transfers recovered memories to Xu Ye, allowing him to investigate an Aberrant’s origins and outside manipulation 37.
• Illusions: Recreates emotionally significant images. Xu Ye uses an old man’s grandson to briefly restore the Aberrant’s reason and later gives Zhang Jian a peaceful vision before killing him 17 48.
• Soul Ray: Directly attacks an enemy’s soul, with one use available every seven days 40.
• Limits: Souls gradually dissipate after death, and protective countermeasures can leave Alice with only fragments. Soul-Seizing also fails to affect the Mirror Spirit in Xu Ye’s apartment 12 21 42.
