Zhang Yucheng, a man in his fifties, was now wearing a woman's makeup. His lips were so red he looked as though he had drunk blood, and his face was plastered with a thick layer of powder. No matter how I looked at him, he seemed eerie, like one of those paper figures in a funeral offerings shop. Even his movements were feminine and rather seductive. With his fingers poised in a delicate orchid gesture, he walked toward Zhang Yunyao and me.
Seeing her father like this filled Zhang Yunyao with terror. She instinctively leaned against me, trembling slightly.
Zhang Yucheng drew closer and closer. When he was only three or four steps away, he suddenly gave an eerie smile and asked in a woman's voice, "Do you think I'm pretty?"
"Very pretty," I said with a cold sneer.
"If I'm so pretty, why did you abandon me?" Zhang Yucheng's expression instantly turned sorrowful, and tears welled in his eyes. He looked so pitiful that the sight might have stirred anyone's sympathy.
If Zhang Yucheng had really been a beautiful woman, perhaps my heart would have softened. But right now, all I could see was someone like Ruhua, and it was honestly rather revolting.
A question suddenly arose in my mind. Could this woman be the owner of that grudge bone?
Why had she suddenly asked something like that?
What kind of bitter grudge did the person who sabotaged the feng shui of the Zhang Family Ancestral Graveyard bear against them, to bury a woman's grudge bone in their cemetery?
Judging by the condition of that grudge bone, this woman had died a violent death and harbored tremendous resentment.
It was quite possible that the person who tampered with the Zhang Family Ancestral Graveyard had killed her, removed her skull, and buried it in the cemetery as an object of suppression.
If that was really what had happened, the act was utterly monstrous.
Questions crowded my mind, but I had no time to dwell on them.
The consequences of ghost possession could range from mild to severe. At worst, you could lose your life; even in the best case, you would fall ill. It depended on how long the possession lasted and how powerful the foul spirit was.
I immediately pushed Zhang Yunyao aside and darted over to Zhang Yucheng. With my fingers still forming the Ghost-Slaying Art seal I had held ready, I thrust them hard at his body.
"Heaven and earth are boundless, lend me your power!" I chanted.
Zhang Yucheng let out a shrill, agonized scream and was sent flying. The black aura shrouding him immediately thinned.
Although most of what I had learned from my master over the years involved feng shui, that did not mean I couldn't deal with these foul spirits. Encounters with demons and ghosts were inevitable when handling all kinds of feng shui problems, so I had to learn these methods to protect myself.
The foul spirit possessing Zhang Yucheng had suffered, and a trace of fear entered the gaze it fixed on me.
Although that strike had hurt it badly, it had not left Zhang Yucheng's body. I hurried forward again, forming seals with both hands and striking at him with both at once.
But the foul spirit was on guard now. Landing another strike with the Ghost-Slaying Art would not be so easy.
It began darting from side to side, dodging my attacks.
I attacked several times in succession without landing a hit. In that short span, it had already fled into the living room outside.
This couldn't go on. I had to deal with this foul spirit as quickly as possible. The trouble at the Zhang Family Ancestral Graveyard was still waiting for me to return and resolve it.
With that in mind, I secretly took out a talisman. It was called the Cloud Thunder Talisman, and my master had left it with me. It was immensely powerful. An ordinary Ghost Entity struck by this talisman would have its soul scattered at once.
The instant the Ghost Entity reached the living room and turned around, I flicked my hand, sending the Cloud Thunder Talisman flying toward it.
The Cloud Thunder Talisman stuck squarely to Zhang Yucheng's back.
Blue lightning immediately coursed over Zhang Yucheng's body, and the talisman's power knocked him flat on the floor.
Another agonized scream rang out, and a cloud of black mist drifted out of Zhang Yucheng's body. What I never expected was that, after swirling briefly in the air, it plunged straight into Steward Wang, who was lying on the floor.
Steward Wang had suffered a head wound earlier and was still lying there.
As soon as the black mist entered him, his body jerked. He actually sat up and gave me a sinister chuckle.
Was this some kind of joke?
I had only just driven it out of Zhang Yucheng, and now it had possessed Steward Wang. Wasn't this turning into an endless loop?
Even more unexpected was how fierce this Ghost Entity was. The Cloud Thunder Talisman my master had given me had failed to scatter its soul, and it could still cause trouble.
It clearly harbored tremendous resentment. The greater a ghost's resentment, the greater its power, making it very difficult to handle. I had never expected to run into such a tough opponent on my very first attempt.
After Steward Wang sat up, my first move was not to rush over and deal with him. Instead, I went to Zhang Yucheng, took out an Evil-Warding Talisman, and stuck it directly over his heart.
With that talisman in place, the Ghost Entity could no longer possess Zhang Yucheng again.
Then I hurried over to Zhang Yunyao and handed her an Evil-Warding Talisman. "Keep this over your heart and stay behind me."
Zhang Yunyao was already scared out of her wits by everything she had witnessed. She took the talisman I gave her and tucked it against her body.
Only then did I walk over to face Steward Wang. "Have you had enough?" I asked coldly.
Like Zhang Yucheng, Steward Wang let out a woman's cold laugh. "No. I won't stop until I've tormented every member of the Zhang Family to death. Since you insist on interfering, I'll kill you too."
"Big talk! You'd better watch your tongue. Today, I'm going to scatter your soul for good!"
The female ghost had succeeded in enraging me. I held out one hand and quickly traced a talisman on its palm with the other. A golden light flashed as the Thunder Talisman took shape, and I charged toward Steward Wang again.
Possessed by the ghost, Steward Wang had immense strength. He grabbed a stool from the floor and hurled it at me.
Fortunately, I reacted quickly and dodged it. The stool smashed against the floor, scattering broken pieces everywhere.
Then he grabbed anything he could lay his hands on and hurled it all at me.
I could no longer afford to worry about that. I charged straight through the flying objects. Somewhere along the way, what seemed to be a teacup struck my forehead, hurting so much that I nearly cried.
At last, I managed to get close to Steward Wang. I lunged and tackled him to the floor, then slammed the palm bearing the talisman directly onto the crown of his head.
