After that blow, Steward Wang shook like a leaf. Moments later, another cloud of black vapor drifted out of his body and headed straight toward Zhang Yunyao, who stood a short distance behind me.
Zhang Yunyao couldn't see the foul thing. She only felt a chill run through her.
But the moment the black vapor reached Zhang Yunyao, it seemed to encounter something terrifying. It darted toward the doorway and vanished in the blink of an eye.
The teacup had struck me in the forehead earlier, and the pain had me sucking in sharp breaths, so I hadn't had a chance to capture the ghost.
Now that I'd stopped, it hurt even more. I felt my forehead and found a lump swelling there.
That had been a hard hit. Even the teacup had shattered.
After taking a deep breath, I pulled out another Evil-Warding Talisman and stuck it over Steward Wang's heart. Only then did I drop to the floor, panting heavily.
At last, I'd driven that foul thing away.
Only then did Zhang Yunyao come to her senses. She walked over to me and asked with concern, "Young Master Wu, you're hurt. Are you all right?"
As she spoke, she took out a tissue and gently wiped the blood from my wound. The injury wasn't serious; the skin had only been scraped.
When Zhang Yunyao crouched beside me, I looked at her lovely face. She really was beautiful.
"I'm fine. It was the foul thing attached to the Grudge Bone we dug up during the day. I'm afraid it won't leave matters at that," I said.
"Young Master Wu, you've really gone to so much trouble for our family," Zhang Yunyao said, her voice full of concern.
"It's all right. I'm paid to resolve your troubles. It's my job."
As we spoke, a muffled groan came from nearby. Zhang Yucheng, who was lying by the doorway, suddenly woke up. He looked terribly weak. After glancing around in confusion, he slowly sat up. "Why am I lying here? What happened?"
"Dad!" Zhang Yunyao went over to Zhang Yucheng. "Uncle Wang called me earlier and said something had happened to you, so Young Master Wu and I rushed back from the ancestral graves. When we got here, we saw that a ghost had possessed you. Young Master Wu drove the female ghost out of you."
Zhang Yucheng looked at Zhang Yunyao in disbelief, then at me. He couldn't remember anything that had just happened.
When a ghost possessed someone, their own consciousness was suppressed, so naturally they wouldn't remember what had happened.
"Mr. Zhang, do you remember what happened before we arrived?" I asked.
Zhang Yucheng patted his head and thought carefully for a while. "After we came back from the ancestral graves, we all ate together. Once you left for the graves again, only Steward Wang and I were home. My blood pressure was acting up then. I felt dizzy and terribly sleepy, so I went to lie down in bed. Not long after I lay down, I felt as though a woman was beside me, talking to me. I couldn't make out what she was saying. After that, I didn't know anything..."
I nodded at his account, thinking that Zhang Yucheng had already fallen victim when that burst of baleful qi struck his face. Perhaps I hadn't cleared it all from his body, leading to this outcome.
But judging by what had just happened, the owner of that Grudge Bone seemed to bear a deep grudge against the Zhang Family.
She had said she would torment everyone in the Zhang Family to death.
Neither love nor hatred came out of nowhere. If the Zhang Family hadn't offended that female ghost, she certainly wouldn't have come after them.
I looked into Zhang Yucheng's eyes and asked gravely, "Mr. Zhang, tell me the truth. Have you offended anyone lately, especially a young woman? If you don't tell me the truth, I really can't help you."
Hearing that, Zhang Yucheng grew agitated. "Young Master Wu, I really haven't offended anyone lately, much less a woman. Heaven is my witness. I'm absolutely not lying to you."
Judging by his expression, Zhang Yucheng didn't seem to be lying. Where exactly had things gone wrong?
I was starting to feel overwhelmed.
Just then, my phone rang. I took it out and saw that Uncle Huzi was calling.
The moment I answered, Huzi's anxious voice came through. "Young Master, we've got a serious problem! That brat Zhang Yunliang won't listen. He's insisting the workers keep going so they can dig up all the coffins in the ancestral graves sooner. They've already started digging!"
"Why didn't you stop him? Recklessly messing around like that will cause trouble!" I said urgently.
"I told him! I even got into a scuffle with him. But the brat said this was his family's business and an outsider like me had no right to interfere. He also said he was in a hurry to get home and didn't have time to waste here," Uncle Huzi said anxiously.
"Uncle Huzi, you have to stop them, no matter what. The corpses buried in a Yin Corpse Ground are no joke. If anything goes wrong, they could rise as undead. Someone could die!" I was so anxious I nearly started swearing.
That spoiled brat Zhang Yunliang was a real fucking handful. I'd barely left, and he'd already pulled this stunt.
"All right, I'll do my best to stop them. Hurry over. Things are getting out of control. That brat Zhang Yunliang said he'd pay the workers extra to get them working right away," Uncle Huzi added.
"Got it. I'm coming right now." I hung up and urged Zhang Yunyao to drive me to the Zhang Family's ancestral graves at once.
Zhang Yucheng had also faintly heard Uncle Huzi's voice over the phone; he had always been loud. His expression changed at once. "Has that brat Yunliang caused trouble again?"
"This isn't just causing trouble. It's no different from killing people. I have to get over there right now and stop him. Yunyao, hurry and take me there," I said urgently.
"That unfilial brat! How did I father such a worthless wretch? If I'd known he'd turn out like this, I should have strangled him the moment he was born!" Zhang Yucheng said bitterly. He tried to get up, saying he would come with us.
But the possession had left him terribly weak, and he couldn't get to his feet at all.
"Mr. Zhang, don't come. Yunyao and I can go on our own."
With that, Zhang Yunyao and I hurried out of the courtyard.
But the moment I stepped outside, I suddenly felt terribly dizzy, and my heart began racing.
With a muffled groan, I collapsed limply to the ground.
"Young Master Wu... Young Master Wu, what's wrong?" Zhang Yunyao's voice came from beside me, growing increasingly indistinct.
My consciousness began to sink. Through the haze, I saw a fox with eight tails appear in my mind.
The eight-tailed fox suddenly transformed into an exceptionally beautiful woman. She looked at me solemnly and said, "Don't go!"
