Background / History
Li Tianyang studied abroad from middle school onward. A high-achieving student, he placed third in the British Physics Olympiad and speaks English with standard British pronunciation. When he planned to return to China for the college entrance examination, his family rented an apartment near his school in downtown Tianfu: Building One, sixteenth floor, apartment 1601 100 385.
Before meeting Ye Lin, he led the Tianyang Team through four examinations. Their second examination, Evolution, placed them in a research base with an invisible, untouchable ghost. A paper on rapid eye movement helped them discover that a sleeping person’s eye movements revealed its position. They cut off one person’s eyelids to use this discovery, but withdrew without solving the third round’s requirement to identify whose dream they occupied 99 100.
Zhang Xiao Peng repeatedly saved Li Tianyang before he obtained his enhancement. Their shared experiences made Li Tianyang regard him as a younger brother; Zhang also supplied recovery support, allowing Li Tianyang to conserve points rather than rely entirely on purchased potions 111 374.
Appearance
- Build and bearing: A tall, handsome young man with a sincere smile, warm eyes, and polished manners 99.
- Clothing: Wears Taoist robes and carries a ritual sword 99 104.
- Spellcasting signs: His robes billow without wind, silver light fills his eyes, and lightning gathers in his hand when he unleashes his Thunder Arts 104.
- Eye injuries: Sacrifices one eye to locate the Life Gate and his remaining eye to identify the candle of life; afterward, both eyes are covered with gauze 110 145.
- White hair: His hair whitens as he exhausts his vital blood and is fully white when Ye Lin examines him after his delayed return 118 143 372.
- Unexplained mark: Returns with a faint hand-shaped mark on his right ankle. Ye Lin suspects it came from a ghost that had clung to his leg, rather than an ordinary temple encounter 372.
Personality
Li Tianyang is friendly, courteous, and initially confident in his intelligence and leadership. His teammates trust him, while Ye Lin regards his warmth as genuine. Ye Lin nevertheless interprets his decision to name the team after himself as a sign of pride and a desire for control 99. His meticulousness remains valuable even after his confidence falters: following his memory loss, he proposes cross-checking their recollections from the beginning without needing detailed instructions 136 371.
His courage does not come from being fearless. He is visibly terrified by the ghosts, but still attempts to draw them away from Ye Lin and later chooses to rescue He Zheng and Zhang Tie rather than flee. Pride also makes him reluctant to accept help when blinded and nearly powerless, because he fears becoming a burden or being abandoned 104 143 147.
Loyalty increasingly outweighs self-preservation. After learning that Ye Lin is being hunted by powerful aliens, he insists on joining him rather than losing another friend. His repeated simulated defeats likewise become an attempt to understand Ye Lin’s suffering, not merely a test of his own strength 373 383.
Abilities & Skills
Celestial Master Enhancement
His Grade B enhancement specializes in supernatural detection and combat rather than direct fighting against powerful physical opponents 99 383.
- Supports spirit spells, tracking, evil-dispelling techniques, and basic Taoist arts 99.
- His spiritual-power reserves run out quickly; he believes energy-based enhancements require additional resources to realize their full potential 379.
- True Person is the next available enhancement, offering true-qi sword control, sword flight, talisman drawing, and formation construction. He considers it but does not purchase it before entering Fengdu 374.
Thunder Arts
Li Tianyang summons heavenly lightning through incantations and hand seals. During the ancestral-hall attack, he identifies heavenly lightning as his strongest Daoist spell 104.
- Uses Thunderbolt Decree against ghosts and to free allies from their grasp 104 143.
- Combines lightning with spiritual flames and his allies’ attacks to escape the devouring ghost 121.
- Uses Five Directions Heavenly Thunder in simulated combat, expecting its paralysis to create an opening for sword attacks 382.
- Can prepare lightning as a trap, but even his strongest attacks barely impede some ghosts in The Mysterious and Subtle 104 383.
Ritual Swordsmanship and Spiritual Flames
He channels magical power and vital blood through his Peachwood Sword to strengthen its attacks and ignite Spirit Flame 104.
- Cuts at ghostly limbs to release himself or trapped companions 110 143.
- Uses the Demon-Slaying Sword Technique alongside thunder and blood-burning effects in simulated combat 382.
- His blood-enhanced sword can briefly hinder ghosts that ordinary attacks fail to stop, but repeated use rapidly exhausts him 104 143.
Vital Blood Empowerment
Vital blood is an emergency power source, not a requirement for his ordinary Thunder Arts or swordsmanship. His Grade B enhancement provides approximately seven mouthfuls, corresponding to the seven souls 147.
- Each mouthful increases his power at the cost of ten to twenty years of lifespan and some weakening of his five senses 147.
- Exhaustion causes severe weakness and graying hair; without replenishment, he risks the five signs of heavenly decay, loss of magical power, and death from old age 143 147.
- System restoration makes these costs recoverable after an examination. Recovery medicine also helps restore his fighting condition 122 147.
Dharma Eye and Perception
By offering an eye and invoking the Nine Chapters of Commandments, Li Tianyang manifests a golden Dharma Eye capable of revealing concealed supernatural features 110 145.
- Locates the village’s Life Gate at a withered tree in the southwestern corner 110.
- Identifies the candle of life among the Scripture Pavilion’s altar candles 145.
- Reveals the true Immortal Gate and the ten blood chains connecting it to the area near the Life Gate 156.
- His perception is not infallible: his barrier-breaking ability cannot distinguish the shrinking-house illusion from reality 116.
Protective Light
He uses protective Numinous Light to defend against spirits and later layers Golden Light Mantras over himself 102 383.
- Extends Numinous Light over both himself and Ye Lin, noticeably reducing the surrounding chill 102.
- Uses Golden Light Mantras defensively during sparring and when the Fengdu starting room appears to reproduce his former home 383 385.
Spirit Coffin and Control Techniques
Li Tianyang possesses Spirit Coffin, a Grade A ability he demonstrates to the other teams in Fengdu. He describes it as better suited to dealing with ghosts 387.
- Also attempts to restrain Ye Lin with a newly purchased control ability during training, though the passages do not identify that technique’s name 383.
- Its use does not overcome the disparity between them: Ye Lin defeats him before he can meaningfully respond 383.
Analysis and Technical Knowledge
His academic background complements his Taoist abilities 100.
- Recognizes the practical value of research on rapid eye movement during Evolution 100.
- Correctly identifies predicting the landing point as a potential counter to Blood Shadow Impact, though Blood Shadow Splitting defeats his prepared trap 383.
- Proposes combining Ye Lin’s Heavenly Tribulation with a Grudge Casket to produce Heavenly Crystals and discusses storing Heavenly Thunder in a Thunder-Answering Ring 379.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Peachwood Sword / ritual sword — His principal weapon for Taoist sword techniques and blood-empowered Spirit Flame 104.
- Talisman papers — Uses them to ward doors and windows and detonates three to break a ghost’s grip. Each costs three points; he initially purchased five 109 110.
- Red thread — Gives a bundle to his companions to set up before entering the ancestral hall with Ye Lin 102.
- Compass — Entrusted to Zhang Xiao Peng during The Mysterious and Subtle 111.
- Recovery supplies — Includes medicinal pills, Adrenaline, and a ten-point Regeneration Potion capable of restoring him close to peak condition 122 147.
- Candle of life — Identifies and lights it with blood essence, temporarily repelling the Scripture Pavilion ghosts. Ye Lin later discovers that the candles also enable the Immortal to track the group 145 154.
- Recording pendant — Carries it when asking to send messages to people in the real world 373.
- System Wristwatch — Provides communication, reward records, and point transfers; automatically relocates to his left hand when he severs his right hand 370 371.
Relationships
- Ye Lin — Initially a fellow captain in cooperative mode; later his trusted friend and Soul Peace teammate. Li Tianyang accepts painful identity tests and refuses to leave him despite the danger of alien hunters 99 370 373.
- Zhang Xiao Peng / Little Chubby — Teammate regarded as a younger brother. His death leaves Li Tianyang grief-stricken and the Tianyang Team’s sole survivor 111 121.
- He Zheng — Rescues him from Long-Armed Ghost, later receives the same help from Li Tianyang, and invites him to join the Soul Peace Team 110 143 152.
- Huang Liang — His Spirit-Piercing Bullets help release Li Tianyang from Long-Armed Ghost and the devouring ghost 110 121.
- An Ke — Helps restrain the devouring ghost and recognizes the strategic value of Li Tianyang’s drawback-based enhancement 121 147.
- Zhang Tie — Helped ally who later carries Li Tianyang after he loses both eyes and exhausts his fighting strength 143 147.
- Yuna — Fellow Fengdu examinee who praises his Grade A ability and thanks him for sharing information about The Mysterious and Subtle 387 392.
Story Role / Major Arcs
The Mysterious and Subtle
- Meets the Soul Peace Team as the Tianyang Team’s captain and cooperates with Ye Lin in investigating the ancestral hall 99 102.
- Sacrifices his first eye to expose the Life Gate, enabling the group to escape the village formation 110.
- Tries to bring Zhang Xiao Peng to safety, only to discover that the person beside him is an imitation. The real Zhang dies attempting to warn him 120 121.
- Suffers a recorded death at the hands of a face-turning ghost; subsequent rounds allow the group to continue investigating 133 137.
- Saves He Zheng and Zhang Tie in the Scripture Pavilion, then sacrifices his remaining eye to find the candle that drives the ghosts back 143 145.
- Helps reveal the true Immortal Gate after Ye Lin exposes the false clues and the mountaintop gate 154 156.
Delayed Return and Cleansing
- Remains unreachable after the others return. His continued Leaderboard presence, with a higher score, indicates that he has not simply died 180 188.
- Recontacts Ye Lin after emerging from his fifth examination. He has spent two days trying to reach the group, unaware that they have already completed their next examination 369.
- Returns with missing memories and a system ID lacking its former letter prefix. Wristwatch relocation, a point transfer, and a Perfect Repair scan establish that the system still recognizes him as an examinee and detects no problem beyond his deliberately severed hand 369 370.
- Finds a reward record for an unremembered special round: Cleansing, worth 53.7 score. What he cleansed remains unknown 371.
- Reports that his previous injuries healed on their own. Ye Lin raises the possibility that his three-day absence outside the instance represented many years within it, but his actual elapsed time remains uncertain 370 372.
Joining Soul Peace and Entering Fengdu
- Learns that An Ke, He Zheng, and Huang Liang have died. Despite Ye Lin’s warnings about alien hunters, he requests membership in the Soul Peace Team 373.
- Prioritizes abilities, attributes, and medicine over a Grade A bloodline upgrade, regretting that different earlier purchases might have saved his former teammates 374 375 378.
- Endures repeated simulated defeats against Ye Lin, then reassures him that he no longer has to fight alone 382 383.
- Enters Fengdu through a Makeup Examination and recognizes the starting room as an exact reproduction of his former Tianfu apartment when he first moved in 384 385.
- Introduces his Grade A Spirit Coffin to the other teams and shares his previous examination experience before the seven-day Reunion challenge begins 387 392.
