Background / History
Northern Barbarian Camp Raid
Liu first appears at the Death Row Camp to requisition twenty condemned prisoners, including Li Dao. He excludes the elderly and disabled, equips the selected men with shabby uniforms and poor-quality weapons, and promises military merit and a feast if their mission succeeds. That night, he leads them and more than a hundred regular soldiers against a small Northern Barbarian camp 3.
His plan uses the prisoners to set fires and draw attention while regular troops attack from behind. After the enemy surrenders, Li Dao kills three captives despite Liu’s objections. Recognizing Li Dao’s contribution and future usefulness, Liu confiscates only his base mission merit, preserves credit for eighteen legitimate enemy kills, and warns that another offense will cost him that credit too. He also urges Li Dao to earn his freedom lawfully rather than escape 4 5.
Cavalry Ambush and Li Dao’s Recruitment
For the next mission, Liu gives Li Dao two new long sabers and explains to protesting prisoners that they are weapons Li Dao seized in the previous battle. He then allows Li Dao to settle their objections through a challenge, which ends with the challenger’s death 6 7.
During the cavalry ambush, Liu directs reinforcements toward the opening Li Dao creates in the enemy formation and intervenes against the Northern Barbarian leader. The leader later breaks through to acquired fifth grade, snaps Liu’s saber, and nearly kills him. Li Dao saves Liu and defeats the leader alone; Liu acknowledges that he owes Li Dao his life 7 8.
The victory leaves only fifty-odd survivors from a force of nearly two hundred, with Li Dao the sole survivor among fifty-five condemned prisoners. Liu lets him retain the looted Yellow Sun Art and Gale Saber Technique, personally escorts him into prison to conceal the books, and offers further help within reasonable limits. A week later, he brings Li Dao to Wei Yun’s meeting with the five prisoners selected for special assignments 9 10.
Arrow-Convoy Ambush
Liu joins the Mighty Camp’s operation against a shipment of one hundred thousand arrows. He deliberately places his men near Li Dao, explaining that it is safer there, and orders them to follow Li Dao’s charge when the attack begins 18.
While Li Dao holds off reinforcements, Liu’s soldiers destroy the arrows. After Li Dao kills the half-step Innate martial artist Lie Xin, Liu rallies the troops, oversees the remaining destruction, and signals mission completion with his whistle before ordering a retreat. Back at Changgu Town, he reports that 536 of the 800 deployed men survived and credits Li Dao with making the operation possible 19 20 21.
Fall of Changgu Town
When Li Dao’s group returns to the devastated town, Liu and concealed Great Qian survivors initially mistake them for enemies. Liu recognizes Li Dao and stops the attack. He explains that Wei Yun drew the Falling Cloud Tribe’s remaining forces away after realizing the Mighty Camp could not win, and points Li Dao toward the commander’s route 26.
After Wei Yun’s rescue and Li Dao’s eventual departure, Liu remarks that Great Qian could gain another “great star of slaughter” if Li Dao returns to the battlefield 28.
Personality
Liu treats condemned prisoners as expendable military resources. He orders them fed so they have the strength to take blows for regular soldiers, and later explains that border fighting is consuming prisoners rapidly. His preferential treatment of Li Dao begins with the practical recognition that a capable prisoner can reduce losses among his own men 3 5 10.
He nevertheless keeps his promised food rewards, acknowledges debts, and bends battlefield-loot regulations for the man who saved him. He also grieves the cavalry ambush’s casualties, particularly the soldiers lost under his command 6 9.
