Background / History

Recruiting the Five Prisoners

As commander of the Mighty Camp at Changgu Town, Wei Yun assembled five unusually capable death-row prisoners: Li Dao, Shen San, Old Ghost, Xu Hu, and Little Madman. He already knew that Li Dao had killed nearly fifty enemies across two death-row missions, including the leader of a hundred Northern Barbarian cavalrymen 10.

Wei Yun offered the prisoners restored household registrations and freedom in exchange for completing assignments. He initially requested ten tasks but accepted Li Dao’s counteroffer of three. At Li Dao’s insistence, he also promised that the assignments would be dangerous without being deliberate death traps 10 11.

The recruitment meeting doubled as a test of the prisoners’ abilities and cooperation. After Li Dao subdued Little Madman and matched Xu Hu in a strength contest, Wei Yun recognized him as the group’s leader. He supplied a Registration Booklet covering the other four prisoners, while admitting that he did not know why Li Dao’s identifying records had been entirely erased 11.

The Three Assignments

Assignment Wei Yun’s Involvement Outcome
Assassinate the Falling Cloud Tribe’s Third Prince Selected the prisoners because recognizable military personnel could not conduct the covert operation. Supplied equipment, provisions, horses, and his own Black Iron Saber 12 13. The group killed the prince and his escort, temporarily disrupting negotiations with the Tamu Tribe. Wei Yun rewarded them with separate tents rather than returning them to the Death Prison 17 18.
Destroy a shipment of 100,000 arrows Personally led Mighty Camp troops into an ambush and undertook to fight the convoy’s Xiantian defender, Ta Shan 18 19. Li Dao killed the unexpected half-step Innate fighter Lie Xin. The troops destroyed the arrows, and Wei Yun covered their withdrawal 20.
Prevent the Tamu Tribe’s eldest prince from entering Great Qian Assigned the five to assist Embroidered Uniform Guard Hundred-Man Commanders Sun Zheng and Gao Liang. Familiar frontier soldiers could not participate covertly 21 22 23. The prince fled back toward the Tamu Tribe, fulfilling the interception objective 26.

The arrow convoy operation cost the Mighty Camp 264 of the 800 men deployed. Wei Yun ordered doubled death benefits for their families and permanently gave Li Dao the Black Iron Saber in gratitude for saving his soldiers 21.

Capture and Rescue

While the five prisoners were away on their third assignment, the Falling Cloud Tribe launched a surprise attack on Changgu Town. When defeat became unavoidable, Wei Yun drew the remaining enemy forces away by himself, allowing some of his wounded troops to survive 26.

Captured by forces led by the Xiantian martial artists Jinhua and Jinsha, Wei Yun was pressured to implicate Great Qian in the Third Prince’s death. He recognized that the tribe’s Anti-Great Qian Faction wanted a pretext for war and refused to cooperate, despite being scalded and suspended beneath the sun. Believing he might die, he regretted failing to fulfill his promise to the prisoners 26.

Li Dao tracked him to the enemy camp. Wei Yun warned him to leave because two Xiantian experts were present, then watched in astonishment as Li Dao slaughtered the soldiers and killed Jinhua. After Jinsha fled, Li Dao freed him; Wei Yun had exhausted his true qi and sustained external injuries but remained able to ride back to Changgu Town 26 27 28.

Rebuilding and Restoring Freedom

To avoid another attack, Wei Yun relocated the surviving Mighty Camp troops to a deserted town one hundred li east of Changgu Town. After a month of construction, he renamed it Changping Town, expressing a wish for enduring peace and safety 28.

Wei Yun then registered new identities for all five prisoners, warning them not to reuse their former household details. Their identity plaques arrived three days later, officially ending their death-row status. They were the first group of prisoners under his command to survive long enough to earn freedom 28.

He invited Li Dao to enlist, but accepted his decision to visit home first. Wei Yun also paid him several hundred taels of silver for the military merits accumulated during the assignments, calculated at one tael per enemy ear 28.

By Chapter 44, Wei Yun was preparing to take the Mighty Camp to the rear to replenish its ranks. He still expected Li Dao to return and hoped to recruit him before increasingly restless frontier conditions worsened. Unknown to him, Li Dao had instead chosen to enlist under Shen Zhong in Cloudrise City 44.

Appearance

  • Middle-aged man, introduced while serving as the Mighty Camp’s commander 10.
  • Wears armor and carries a saber at his waist 10 12.
  • Frequently maintains a faint smile, including during negotiations and exchanges with the prisoners 10 11.

Personality

Wei Yun is patient and calculating in negotiations. He lets Shen San’s rejection of imperial service collapse under the offer of freedom, tolerates his insults, and uses the recruitment meeting to assess the prisoners without intervening in their disputes. He appreciates Li Dao’s intelligence, even while joking that dealing with someone so clever makes his own work harder 10 11 18.

His concern for his troops is demonstrated through action: he personally confronts the convoy’s strongest defender, covers the retreat, doubles compensation for the dead, and later draws attackers away from Changgu Town. In captivity, he refuses to supply a political pretext against Great Qian and worries about the promise he may leave unfulfilled 18 20 21 26.

Wei Yun also enjoys teasing others, especially Shen San, and trades dry jokes with Li Dao and Liu Neng. Although disturbed by Li Dao’s enjoyment of slaughter, he considers that ferocity valuable on the battlefield so long as it is directed against Great Qian’s enemies 28.
