In the darkness before dawn, Steve stood on full alert, both ears pricked. At the slightest disturbance, he would turn his shield toward the source of the sound.
Seeing how hard he was working, Pym and Janet shrank themselves down to the size of thumbs. It was much safer that way, since no sniper could possibly hit such tiny targets from so far away.
Janet pulled Pym down onto Steve's shoulder, and the three chatted. Pym even told him where the refrigerator was in his house and invited the captain to have some ice cream and take a break.
About three minutes later, Bucky returned. Facing everyone's gazes after entering, he shook his shoulder-length hair like he was snapping out a mop.
"Sorry, I didn't catch them. I only found a few wandering footprints on top of the high-rises, but the other side seemed to vanish into thin air."
Steve lowered his head in thought, scooped up a spoonful of ice cream, and put it in his mouth before passing the tub to Bucky.
"As expected. The point of a long-range sniper assassination is to flee quickly after one missed shot. They don't want to expose their identity."
Though ice cream was cold, it was essentially a high-calorie food. The cream, sugar, and milk could provide plenty of energy, so Bucky accepted it and began eating without caring in the slightest that Steve had already used the spoon.
The icy dessert entered his mouth, and Bucky sucked in breaths through his teeth as he said somewhat indistinctly, "I'm starting to believe Fury's theory. This assassin is full of S.H.I.E.L.D. style."
"Don't be so certain yet. Let's hear what Hank has to say."
Without Fury present, Steve acted completely differently than before.
When they had met Fury earlier, Steve had played
