They never did get to play Gwent. Perhaps the bugs had caught their scent when the group returned. Not long after they got back to the Relay Station, the swarm came trailing after them.
If the Greenskins' WAAAGH! was a green ocean, then the bug tide was a tsunami. Terrifying numbers surged in from every direction. Even the cloud-choked sky was veiled by emerald spores like thick smoke, while the beating of leathery wings rumbled like muffled thunder.
"Tsk. A Brood Tyrant that evolved wings? That's a genuinely rare specimen."
Su Ming, who had been explaining Gwent to the Sister, stopped what he was doing. A massive shadow flying above the distant horizon caught his attention.
Normally, these colossal creatures dozens of meters tall evolved into tank-like ground units. But whenever the Broodmind deemed it necessary, it could alter the genes of any Tyranid, mutating them and giving them wings.
Su Ming considered it for a second. This meant the Broodmind believed there was an enemy on this planet that the swarm could only handle by taking flight.
That enemy definitely wasn't the Space Marines. Whether they could fly or not made no difference to the Astartes. Every one of them was a gun emplacement, an anti-aircraft battery.
For a massive Tyrant to take flight, it would inevitably need to mutate to reduce its weight. Its chitinous shell would become hollow and fragile as a result, sacrificing part of its defense and ground combat ability in exchange for agility and speed.
Then again, perhaps the Broodmind was testing a new theory of integrated air-ground warfare on this planet. That Zerg Overlord in the High Dimension was absolutely one of the few true Master Strategists and Tacticians in the Warhammer Universe. It learned from every victory and defeat, making each new
