This environment was extremely unfavorable for creatures with keen senses of smell. Even though Strangle could distinguish all sorts of scents in ordinary sewers, surrounded by endless rotting corpses, it could not lock onto Diana's scent.
Every corpse smelled different. The stench of decay after death, along with the different body odors they had possessed in life, had all mixed together.
Even after Strangle mimicked canine olfactory cells, the answer it sent to its host was still that it had lost her trail.
Su Ming only knew that she had once fallen onto some corpses, then climbed down the mountain of bodies like he had and entered this narrow canyon. But once the few footprints left on the corpses vanished, there were no traces left on the solid Blackstone ground.
"What does this have to do with those beetles?" Harley followed them down from the corpse mountain and leaned closer to ask.
"Haven't you noticed?"
Su Ming pulled a rotting corpse from a pile beside him, then raised a hand and vigorously wiped its face clean, smearing away the Black Mud on it.
As pale skin was exposed once more, Harley and Bobo saw that the corpse no longer had any eyeballs. Black Mud gushed from its slack eye sockets like thick glue.
"The beetles plucked out their eyeballs?" Bobo shook his head. He knew beetles were generally decomposers in the food chain, but eating nothing but eyeballs was just too bizarre.
"Not exactly."
Su Ming tossed the corpse back and shook off his hand before taking out the fruit Harley had snatched from the beetles again.
"This is genuine fruit, made of cellulose. It merely looks like an eyeball. But first, eyeballs must be some kind of clue. There's a connection between the two that we still don't know.
