Background
Queen Hippolyta named Diana in memory of Diana Rockwell Trevor, a U.S. Air Force test pilot who had been stranded on Paradise Island, aided the Amazons with outside scientific knowledge, and later sacrificed herself. The Amazons adopted Trevor's eagle insignia as a symbol of bravery and motherhood. 99
Diana was raised believing that Hippolyta had molded her from clay and that the gods had granted her life. In truth, Zeus had fathered her and concealed Paradise Island to hide the affair from Hera. Her divine origin made Athena her sister and Ares her brother, though she later came to see that their conflict had used her as a pawn. 413
General Phillips trained Diana harshly from childhood, suppressing her playful interests in cute objects and emphasizing combat, discipline, and Amazon duty. Diana eventually won recognition as Wonder Woman and received divine equipment that had apparently been prepared for her in advance. 1527
Diana entered human society at seventeen during World War I and later fought in World War II. She became one of the Justice League's most prominent heroes and assumed the Amazon throne after Hippolyta was petrified and disappeared. Hippolyta's later coerced abdication further secured Diana's position as queen. 4764 2311 4440
Appearance
Diana is a tall, athletic Amazon with long black hair, a powerful build, and a warrior's bearing. By Amazon standards, she is considered “slender and delicate,” despite standing 1.83 meters tall and weighing 75 kilograms. 1527
- Usually wears Amazonian armor, Greek-style sandals, a sword, shield, bracers, and the Lasso of Truth.
- Wears the Starlight Tiara as part of her battle gear. 366
- Her hair turns bright silver and her eyes lose their visible pupils when she releases Zeus's sealed divine power. 1492
- The Witch's Mark appears upon her forehead to those able to perceive witchcraft. 383
Personality
Diana is a traditional Amazon warrior: direct, competitive, disciplined, and deeply drawn to battle. She prefers decisive close combat and regards fighting as a path to glory, duty, and accomplishment rather than wealth. 2194 3782 5369
Despite her aggression in battle, Diana is compassionate toward allies and reluctant to abandon people in danger. Her inability to kill Cheetah—even when Cheetah requests death or attacks her—remains one of her defining emotional vulnerabilities. 340 426 492
She distrusts Olympus and resents being defined by Zeus's bloodline or the title of a god. Diana would rather be known as a woman of Paradise Island and a member of the Justice League than as an Olympian divine figure. 337 1492
Diana is uncomfortable with deception and dishonorable tactics, though experience with Deathstroke has made her more willing to use unconventional plans when necessary. 1426 2340 Her knowledge of modern technology, mathematics, and physics is limited compared with her martial education; she types with two fingers and relies on others for technical support. 415 767
Abilities & Skills
Amazon Physiology
Diana possesses immense physical strength, durability, reflexes, and endurance. She is stronger than Su Ming in pure physical contests and can perform feats such as turning machinery that requires nearly the effort of lifting an airplane. 337 492
- Capable of flight and sustained aerial combat.
- Can fight continuously against monsters, divine beings, and large enemy forces.
- Skilled enough to detect ambushes and react before an attacker can strike. 492
- Needs oxygen protection in space under normal conditions. 414
Amazon Combat Mastery
Diana is trained in the martial disciplines of Paradise Island and favors sword-and-shield combat. She is proficient with modern firearms and explosives, but prefers cold weapons and direct engagements. 2340 4796
- Uses precise throws, shield formations, grappling, and coordinated two-person tactics.
- Can fight barehanded when weapons offer no advantage. 96
- Has substantial battlefield experience dating back to both World Wars. 2340
- Her usual instinct is to confront enemies head-on, which can make retreat difficult for her. 2194
Divine Power
Diana's Bracelets of Submission function as both armor and seals on the divine power inherited from Zeus. Removing them releases lightning-based Sky Divine Power and the residual energy of the Witch's Mark. 1492 4820
- Can generate lightning, chain lightning, and related electrical attacks. 4820
- Releasing her seals drastically amplifies her combat power; at full strength, she has defeated First Born and can contend with extremely powerful magical enemies. 412 1493
- Diana hates using this power because it comes from Zeus and draws her closer to the Olympian identity she rejects. 1492 5208
- The unleashed state leaves her more exposed to the influence and consequences of her divine and witchcraft heritage.
Witch's Mark
Hecate branded Diana as a child with the Witch's Mark, then erased the memories of the event from Paradise Island. The mark later resurfaced when Diana encountered witchcraft connected to Hecate. 375
- The mark can create a hostile secondary personality that follows Hecate's orders and recognizes neither friend nor family. 412
- Under its control, Diana loses the restraint imposed by her bracelets and becomes vastly more destructive. 412 414
- The mark grants access to witchcraft-related power but makes Diana vulnerable to Circe and Hecate's schemes. 1531 1532
- Its unresolved nature later led to Diana being placed under restrictions at Sepulk. 2295
Lasso of Truth
Diana's Lasso of Truth is a divine artifact forged by Vulcan from Gaea's belt. It restrains targets and compels them to speak truthfully. 98 388
- Has bound powerful beings, including Mazikeen, and can force information from captives. 400 473
- Can disrupt divine energy, including Darkseid's Omega Energy. 1426
- Binding Diana with her own lasso suppresses her divine power. 415
- Its maximum length is approximately 270 meters, with a minimum length of two meters. 415
- It is vulnerable to sufficiently overwhelming divine force and can be manipulated by powerful witchcraft. 97 1526
Magic Resistance
Diana's resistance to magic comes primarily from her divine bloodline and Vulcan-forged equipment. 1476 3397
- Can withstand magical fire that would seriously threaten Superman. 3329
- Relies especially on her shield and equipment when facing magical attacks. 1476
- Can still be injured by specialized magic, such as Merlin's freezing attack. 3329
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Lasso of Truth — Divine binding artifact that compels truth and suppresses Diana's divine power when used against her. 415
- Vulcan's Sword — A divine blade capable of cutting at the molecular level; Diana can also use it as a thrown weapon. 3781 5068
- Amazonian Shield — Her principal defensive tool against magical and physical attacks; it can be damaged by sufficiently powerful magic. 3329
- Bracelets of Submission — Bracers that serve as armor and restrain her Sky Divine Power and Witch's Mark. 1492
- Starlight Tiara — Her recognizable headpiece. 366
- Nightblade — A blade associated with her temporary rule of Maya. 1498
- Spare divine equipment — Vulcan keeps replacement armor, weapons, shields, and even spare Lassos of Truth available for her. 93 1405
Relationships
- Hippolyta — Mother and former queen of the Amazons. Their relationship is strained by Hippolyta's faith in Olympus and opposition to Diana's association with Deathstroke; Diana nevertheless remains deeply affected by her mother's disappearance and later rescue. 2736 4440
- Donna Troy — Younger sister and fellow Amazonian hero. Donna admires Diana, though years of being compared to and overshadowed by her created resentment and insecurity. 386 2311
- Su Ming / Deathstroke — Tactical partner and emotionally complicated ally. He repeatedly protected Diana from Hecate's influence, often against her wishes, while Diana later fought beside him in major conflicts. 386 415 1426 2736
- Barbara Minerva / Cheetah — Arch-nemesis, former friend, and later uneasy ally. Diana cannot bring herself to kill her and eventually agrees to spar with her and consider her for Justice League Dark. 340 492 5369
- Zatanna — One of Diana's closest friends. They cooperate frequently in magical investigations and maintain a candid, supportive friendship. 1368 5401
- Vulcan — One of Diana's closest Olympian relatives and the forge-master responsible for much of her divine equipment. 337 5068
- Hera — An Olympian authority with a strained connection to Diana. Hera seeks to protect her while also attempting to use Diana to further Olympus's interests. 329 2776
- Artemis — Amazon sister whom Diana rescued from the Underworld after Artemis died in a scheme connected to Hippolyta. 3843
- Harley Quinn — Close friend despite their sharply different personalities. Harley's persistence drew Diana into the friendship, while Diana helped influence Harley's move away from crime. 3730
Story Role / Major Arcs
Hecate and the Witch's Mark
Diana's sealed childhood memories return when Hecate's forces threaten the magical world. She discovers that Hecate branded her with the Witch's Mark and later seeks Circe's help, unaware that the mark makes her a central target in the Witch War. 375 383
Deathstroke incapacitates Diana and sends her to Hell to prevent Hecate from exploiting the mark. Diana escapes captivity, only to be deceived by Circe and controlled by the Witch's Mark. 386 399 409
Under Hecate's control, Diana battles Deathstroke and Constantine's group at overwhelming power. Deathstroke eventually uses the Lasso of Truth and the Spiral Comet Fall to subdue her before the mark destroys her body. 412 415
Earth's Submergence
After recovering from the Witch War, Diana joins the effort to save Aquaman and confront the alien sea gods flooding Earth. Her return restores morale among the Justice League and Teen Titans. 473
Diana launches and rides an ancient rocket through a barrier in the sky, allowing the Justice League to pursue the sea gods. During the operation, she again refuses to kill Cheetah despite their conflict. 492
Justice League Dark and Maya
Diana leads Justice League Dark from its underground headquarters beneath the Hall of Justice, though she struggles with the group's isolation and lack of cohesion. 370
She later investigates magical threats in Maya with Zatanna and Bobo. After the local ruler's death, Diana accepts responsibility for Maya and declares protection for its surviving civilians. 1368 1498
Darkseid and Circe
Diana serves as a decoy against Darkseid, restraining him with the Lasso of Truth while Deathstroke executes the larger plan. 1426
When Circe becomes Hecate's incarnation, Diana faces the dilemma of defeating her without becoming the next God of Witchcraft. Circe later captures Diana and takes her to the Witch's Moon, where Diana struggles against the dimension's witchcraft-enhanced environment. 1511 1525 1531
Amazon Queenship
Diana's role as queen places her at odds with Hippolyta over Paradise Island, Olympus, and Diana's personal decisions. Their conflict culminates in a physical duel, reflecting both their emotional distance and differing visions for the Amazons. 2736 2737
After Zeus's death, Hippolyta is rescued from captivity and pressured into abdicating in Diana's favor, consolidating Diana's claim to Paradise Island's throne. 4440
Later Alliances
Diana refuses an invitation from the Essence Society, choosing Earth and the Justice League over a place among higher beings. 2776
She later works with Cheetah and Zatanna in the Dreaming, prioritizing a potential rescue of Lex Luthor despite personal distrust and animosity toward him. 5369 5404
