The world of Preacher was actually quite dark as well, but broadly speaking, it was the story of a small-town priest and his friends setting out on a journey to find God after discovering that He had gone missing.

Some of the more famous examples were Wrong Turn, Timber Falls, and The Hills Have Eyes. The progenitor was Cannibal Holocaust. They were quite entertaining to watch now and then.
