Many people had seen vampire movies. Not only did those being drained wear blissful expressions as they walked toward death, but the ones drinking their blood were deeply intoxicated as well.

In Christianity, blood was closely tied to the soul. When blood left a person's body, it also meant the soul was departing, and the person would die as a result.

At The Last Supper, Jesus had once said, "One among you will betray me. But know this: this bread is my flesh, and the wine is my blood."

As a race cursed by God, Vampires could only survive by drinking human blood. It represented their betrayal of faith in God; that was the core of their curse.
