If the hero successfully defeated all the monsters secretly arranged by the gods, he would return home none the wiser, praising the god who had shown him the way while clutching the treasure and expanding Olympus's faith.
And if the hero failed and died on the road, the gods would have enjoyed a free spectacle. They could simply replace him with someone else.
