"What!?" Shen Lingxue was instantly startled. "Are you sure there's no mistake? Fang Xiu's ability is Future Prediction?"
Li Wenhao nodded. "Our surveillance equipment is professional-grade. Fang Xiu and Zhao Hao were ordinary people before this, so the chances of them discovering the wiretap are practically zero. That should rule out the possibility that they were putting on an act over the phone.
"Besides, Fang Xiu just said something else."
At this point, Li Wenhao couldn't help taking a deep breath.
"What did he say?" Shen Lingxue asked.
"He said two more guests would be coming soon."
"What!? Two guests? Could he mean..."
Their eyes met, and each saw the shock in the other's gaze.
Li Wenhao said slowly, "Fang Xiu has a very small social circle. He's also an orphan, so he has no relatives dropping by. The guests he mentioned are very likely... you and me."
Shen Lingxue fell silent.
A moment passed.
Her lips moved slightly. "Does the ability of Future Prediction really exist? Even if it does, a First-Tier Spirit Tamer shouldn't have it."
"Exactly." Li Wenhao nodded. "The more powerful an ability is, the more restrictions it has. Take that spatial ability user we interviewed earlier. He could teleport, but as a First-Tier Spirit Tamer, he could only move ten centimeters. After that, his spirituality was exhausted, and he had to wait an hour before he could teleport again.
"Ten centimeters an hour. That teleportation ability is slower than a turtle crawling.
"A spatial ability user like him would have to reach at least the second tier before he could use teleportation in actual combat.
"If Fang Xiu has the ability of Future Prediction, then as a First-Tier Spirit Tamer, he shouldn't be much better off than that spatial ability user. Maybe he could only predict what would happen in the next second. But he predicted that you and I would come looking for him. How long has it been since then?"
"Don't jump to conclusions," Shen Lingxue said gravely. "It could be a coincidence. Or perhaps someone in the Investigation Bureau leaked our movements."
"Investigator Shen, what do you think would happen if we didn't go see Fang Xiu today? Wouldn't that invalidate his prediction?" Li Wenhao suddenly suggested.
Shen Lingxue looked at him as though he were an idiot. "Our assignment is to investigate Fang Xiu and Zhao Hao. Now you're going to back out over a single phone call? How would you explain that to Director Wang when we got back?
"What if this is all a setup by Fang Xiu? We'd never live it down.
"Besides, if Fang Xiu really has Future Prediction, surely you know how valuable he would be once he joined the Investigation Bureau?"
Li Wenhao gave an awkward smile. "I was just throwing it out there. I wanted to see whether his predictions really are that accurate. Of course we're going."
"Let's go." Shen Lingxue opened the car door. A breeze swept in, blowing strands of hair against her fair cheeks.
"I want to see for myself whether this Future Prediction is real."
They got out of the car and headed straight for Fang Xiu's home.
When they reached the fifth floor and were about to knock, they discovered that the door was ajar. It opened with a push.
They exchanged a glance, unsure whether Fang Xiu had foreseen their arrival or simply hadn't shut the door properly.
Once inside, they saw a handsome man with an upright bearing and a calm expression brewing tea.
It was Fang Xiu.
Three teacups sat on the coffee table, one in front of Fang Xiu and two to the side. Wisps of white steam rose from the cups, indicating that the water had just boiled.
The sight of the teacups immediately startled Shen Lingxue and Li Wenhao.
Did he really foresee this? Or were there surveillance cameras outside the residential complex?
Then Fang Xiu spoke.
"Miss Shen, Mr. Li, please have a seat."
Those words deepened their shock.
They were certain this was their first meeting with Fang Xiu. Before this, neither side had known the other.
Moreover, as members of the Investigation Bureau, their personal information was classified. Fang Xiu certainly shouldn't have been able to access it.
Confident in her own abilities, Shen Lingxue took the lead and sat on the sofa, scrutinizing Fang Xiu.
"How do you know our surnames? And how did you know we were coming?"
Ignoring Shen Lingxue's scrutiny and suspicion, Fang Xiu said calmly, "My eyes can see the future."
Hearing Fang Xiu admit it himself sent shock surging through both of them.
But despite her shock, Shen Lingxue's suspicions remained.
"You can see the future? How can you prove it?"
"You're both from the Investigation Bureau, and you've come here for two reasons. One is to investigate the Ghost Domain at Hundred Willows Academy. The other is to assess my ability and Zhao Hao's, to see whether we qualify to join the Investigation Bureau," Fang Xiu said calmly.
"Mr. Fang, that doesn't prove you have Future Prediction. Our reasons for coming would be easy to guess, as long as you'd learned about the Investigation Bureau beforehand," Li Wenhao said, shaking his head.
Fang Xiu turned his gaze to Li Wenhao and continued calmly, "You've been secretly in love with Shen Lingxue for a long time, and you've already written a love letter. It's in the left pocket of your jacket. It says, 'Lingxue, by the time you read this letter, I'll probably be dead. The truth is, there's something I've always wanted to tell you...'"
"Stop!" Li Wenhao sprang to his feet, his face flushed as he cut Fang Xiu off.
Shen Lingxue gave Li Wenhao a surprised look.
Li Wenhao hurried to explain, "Investigator Shen, you know me. Fang Xiu is definitely talking nonsense. I really didn't write a love letter. I..."
"Enough." Shen Lingxue gestured for Li Wenhao to calm down.
"I've received plenty of love letters over the years, so I'm not surprised you'd do something like this. From the sound of it, though, you intended to tell me only if you died in the line of duty someday. That does surprise me a little. But there's no chance of anything between us."
Li Wenhao's face grew even redder. "I know. I just..."
"So you really did write a love letter? Take it out and let me see." Shen Lingxue held out her hand.
"I... I..."
"Stop stammering. I want to see whether its contents match what Fang Xiu said!"
Left with no choice, Li Wenhao took an envelope from the left pocket of his jacket.
Shen Lingxue accepted the envelope, opened it, and quickly scanned the first few lines. Her shock intensified.
The words on the page matched what Fang Xiu had said exactly.
She tossed the love letter back to Li Wenhao and stared straight at Fang Xiu. "Given Li Wenhao's personality, if he intended for me to find out only after he died, there's no way he would have shown this letter to anyone.
"But knowing what the letter says doesn't mean you have Future Prediction. After all, it wasn't written in the future. It was written in the past."
