The fifth time.
Fang Xiu had finally understood that running away was useless, and so was fear. He could not spend his entire life lying in bed with his eyes shut. If he wanted to survive, he had to face his wife and truly ignore her. Otherwise, he would never make it out of the house.
"Honey, breakfast is ready."
Fang Xiu turned a deaf ear. With a vacant stare, he got up, climbed out of bed, and walked toward the bedroom door.
His wife was blocking the doorway.
Fang Xiu remained utterly unmoved. As though he could not see her, he walked straight into her.
The collision he had expected never happened. Fang Xiu passed through her as though she were a mass of air, without the slightest resistance.
He had already guessed that until his wife confirmed he could see her, neither of them could physically touch the other.
The way she had sunk into the bed earlier was solid proof of that.
Soon, he successfully made it out of the bedroom.
But his wife seemed to have no intention of letting him go. Like a playful butterfly, she kept flitting across his field of vision.
Then Fang Xiu died.
He died because his acting was not good enough, because he could not overcome his instinctive reactions.
It was hard not to blink when someone threw a punch at you. Even if the fist stopped a centimeter from your nose, instinct would still make you blink.
His wife was just like that. The more he ignored her, the closer she got. She would even drift up before his eyes like a ghost, so close their noses nearly touched, so close that a pucker of her lips would be enough for a kiss.
At moments like that, even a professional actor would probably get a fright.
The sixth time.
Expressionless, Fang Xiu successfully left the bedroom. He did not immediately bolt out of the house, afraid that abnormal behavior would arouse suspicion. Instead, he planned to use the bathroom first.
His wife seemed very "shy" and did not follow him into the bathroom.
Just as Fang Xiu breathed a sigh of relief and began relieving himself, a beautiful woman's head slowly emerged from the toilet bowl.
Fang Xiu died again.
The seventh time, the eighth, the ninth, the tenth.
Fang Xiu had died until he despaired, until he went numb, until he broke down.
He could not do it. He really could not.
No matter what he tried, he simply could not overcome his instinctive reactions. His wife would suddenly appear in all sorts of ways, making his gaze shift involuntarily.
Once, she even emerged from his chest.
Running away outright did not work either. Any abnormal behavior would immediately trigger his wife's transformation.
The repeated deaths finally snapped Fang Xiu's nerves, which had been stretched taut all this time.
He fought back, he fled, he gave up on himself... It was useless. Everything was useless.
It was as though his fate had been sealed, as though he was destined to die at his wife's hands.
The eleventh time, the twelfth, the thirteenth...
"Honey, breakfast is ready."
"Hehe, my wife is so good to me."
Fang Xiu had gone mad.
His mental state had become completely abnormal. His former clarity and reason had given way to madness and confusion.
But his wife was no judge. She would not spare him just because he had become mentally ill.
The cycle of death continued.
What would happen if someone was driven mad by a stimulus, only to keep receiving the same stimulus after losing his mind?
No one knew...
The eighteenth time.
Fang Xiu lay calmly in bed. If not for his barely perceptible breathing and the instinctive beating of his heart, he would have been indistinguishable from a corpse.
If anyone could have seen his eyes at that moment, they would have made a horrifying discovery: those were not the eyes of a living person.
They were filled with deathly stillness, like a pool of stagnant water, without a trace of human emotion.
People said the eyes were the windows to the soul, but Fang Xiu's windows had been sealed with cement.
Yet if someone could see through that thick cement, through those eyes so calm they seemed dead, they would discover...
Beneath that calm lurked unimaginable madness, suppressed to its absolute limit!
And hatred fierce enough to set every drop of blood in his body ablaze!
Those flames of maddened hatred burned fiercely. It was hatred for his wife, boundless hatred for having been killed eighteen times!
Some people lived, but were already dead.
Some people had gone mad, but were utterly lucid.
That was Fang Xiu's state at that moment.
Repeated deaths had driven him into madness, but in the end, his overwhelming hatred had forcibly dragged his reason back out of it. His hatred for his wife had, in a sense, rebuilt his sanity.
Suddenly, Fang Xiu calmly sat up in bed, unconsciously murmuring, "Die, die, die. You deserve to die. As long as I'm alive, you will have to die."
His voice was low and calm, without the slightest hint of emotion.
He spoke the most chilling words in the calmest voice.
"Honey, breakfast is ready."
His wife's gentle voice sounded right on cue.
Fang Xiu acted as though he had heard nothing. He got up, put on his shoes, climbed out of bed, and walked straight through his wife's body. Then he used the bathroom, washed up, and changed his clothes.
Throughout this, his wife interfered as she always had. But from beginning to end, Fang Xiu's gaze never changed in the slightest, as though he truly could not see her.
After getting dressed, Fang Xiu even sat at the table and calmly ate breakfast.
Of course, he had made it himself: a fried egg and a sausage sandwiched between slices of whole-wheat bread, accompanied by a glass of plain milk. Simple and nutritious.
Clearly, the prettier a woman was, the better she was at lying.
His wife was exactly like that. She had said breakfast was ready, but had not actually made any.
After finishing breakfast, Fang Xiu walked straight toward the front door.
He needed to leave this place, investigate clues about his wife outside, and search for the abnormalities in this world. Only then would he have a chance at revenge.
Just as he placed his hand on the handle, his wife's beautiful face appeared embedded in the door, wearing a gentle smile.
"Honey, could you please not go out? Could you stay home and keep me company?"
Click!
The handle turned, and Fang Xiu calmly walked out.
Bang!
The door slammed shut.
His wife did not follow him out.
After enduring eighteen deaths, Fang Xiu had finally made it out the front door. Yet he felt none of the joy of surviving a disaster.
Only one thing filled his mind now: revenge!
Beyond revenge, there was still nothing but fucking revenge!
"No one gets to kill me eighteen times and get away with it! No one!"
Tap, tap, tap...
Fang Xiu's measured footsteps echoed through the stairwell.
He lived on the fifth floor of an old residential complex. There was no elevator, so he had to walk down the stairs.
Soon, after making his way through the dim, dilapidated stairwell, Fang Xiu saw the building's entrance.
He slowly pushed the entrance door open. Bright, warm sunlight streamed through the gap, steadily filling the dark stairwell as the door opened wider.
It was as though a warm, sunlit world lay outside. The sunlight fell on Fang Xiu, bathing him in warmth.
After enduring eighteen deaths, he had finally lived to see the sun outside his door.
He stepped out into that sunlit world.
Then Fang Xiu froze in place, his blood all but turning to ice.
At that moment, though sunlight enveloped his entire body, he could no longer feel the slightest warmth.
He stared blankly at the world outside, unconsciously murmuring, "Is this... hell?"
