Background / History
Xuan Zi grew up at Shrek Academy and remained devoted to it throughout his life. Mu En, his martial uncle, watched him grow up and regarded his loyalty as unquestionable. His strength and rare martial soul made him the intended successor to the Sea God Pavilion’s leadership 82 245.
Ten years before the main tournament events, he supervised an Inner Court expedition near the Star Dou Great Forest’s core region. Assuming the students could handle anything short of a hundred-thousand-year soul beast, he drank wine and fell asleep nearby. The group encountered precisely such a beast, leaving more than a dozen disciples dead. Zhang Lexuan survived, but was subsequently made to kneel and beg him to return after he threatened to withdraw from his responsibilities 137 183 284.
Appearance
- Elderly features: Disheveled hair, an aged face, and a beard 82 106.
- Muscular physique: His muscles expand enough to burst through his clothes when he releases his power 80.
- Martial Soul Avatar: His body enlarges severalfold and pointed horns appear on his head 273.
- Characteristic accessory: Frequently carries and drinks from a wine gourd 77 182 349.
Personality
Xuan Zi combines genuine loyalty to Shrek with arrogance, impatience, and a strong sense of entitlement. He resents juniors challenging his authority and insists that exceptional martial souls belong at Shrek. During Ma Xiaotao’s tournament rampage, he silences Wang Yan’s pleas to concede because he still hopes to preserve the academy’s honor 77 103 106 107.
He can feel sincere guilt: after the Mingdou disaster, he offers to resign and publicly accept responsibility. Nevertheless, his subsequent conduct remains unreliable, and Mu En identifies his restless, impetuous nature as his principal flaw. He also mistakes Xiao Xiao’s terror at his approach for admiration 82 90 130.
His protectiveness is selective and readily becomes aggression. He punishes Zhou Yi for mistreating his disciple, accepts Tang San’s misleading account of Jiang Nannan without uncovering the harassment behind it, and attempts to kill Xu Sanshi for defecting 175 264 356 357.
Abilities & Skills
Godly Taotie Bull
- A top-tier martial soul with a trace of a devouring trait 119 121.
- Produces ocher or earthen-yellow soul power and enhances his physique 80 90 176.
- Carries significant drawbacks: gluttony, susceptibility to drunkenness, and exceptionally deep sleep—even thunder cannot easily wake him 183.
- Mu En makes passing down its bloodline a condition for allowing him to leave the Sea God Pavilion 82.
Gravity and Vortex Control
- His martial soul allows him to manipulate gravity, though he considers Xu Cheng’s repulsive force beyond his own capabilities 105.
- Creates an earthen-yellow vortex with powerful suction, dragging the Death Messenger toward him 80.
- His enraged soul power can form an enormous vortex and crack the surrounding ground 183.
Martial Soul Avatar
- Enlarges his body and manifests pointed horns 273.
- Uses the transformation to drive through earth and excavate an underground escape route, advancing roughly a thousand meters in seconds 273.
- Manifests a gigantic bull during his attack on Xu Sanshi 356.
Super Douluo Strength and Support
- Stands at Level 98. Mu En believes a breakthrough beyond this rank may be possible if he corrects his temperament, but no such advancement is documented 90 357.
- Flies while carrying Tang San and uses mental power to inspect the surrounding area 176 183.
- Releases his aura while sleeping to deter nearby soul beasts; this precaution does not prevent Tang San from being attacked by human opponents 183.
- Breaks Tang San out of an ice sculpture and infuses him with soul power after finding him gravely injured 183.
- Acknowledges that rescuing someone from Di Tian is beyond him and could provoke a war with the Star Dou Great Forest 154.
- Is outmatched by Du Busi during their Sunset Forest confrontation, and later has a powerful attack dispersed by Xu Cheng with one finger 185 357.
Equipment / Items
- Wine gourd — His habitual drinking vessel, carried during meetings, travel, and conversations with students 77 154 349.
- Flower of Life petals — Secures five petals for Shrek at auction for 120 million Gold Soul Coins, after Xu Cheng drives up the bidding 102 103.
Relationships
- Mu En — Martial uncle, senior authority, and predecessor. Mu En repeatedly restrains and admonishes him; Xuan Zi strongly opposes retreating from Mingdu while Mu En remains trapped 82 90 282 289.
- Tang San — His sole personal disciple, accepted after his twin martial souls and innate full soul power are confirmed. Xuan Zi defends him but provides little cultivation instruction and fails to wake during a serious attack. The disciple disappears after the Battle of Mingdu 154 175 176 183 349.
- Xiao Xiao — Prospective disciple. She fears he has sinister motives and leaves with Wang Dong to avoid him; Tang San’s intervention allows her to escape accepting the offer 130 147 154.
- Zhang Lexuan — Former student and intended later successor. She resents his role in the expedition deaths and eventually confronts him over both his negligence and Shrek’s treatment of her 137 284.
- Wang Yan — Tournament teacher whose objections Xuan Zi overrides. Wang Yan later reports his suspicion that Xuan Zi is a Holy Spirit Cult spy 107 123.
- Xu Cheng — Adversary whom he first seeks to recruit and abduct, then increasingly hates for humiliating Shrek and spreading the spy allegation 107 115 119 245.
- Bei Bei — Chosen future pillar of Shrek. Xuan Zi supports concentrating resources on his eventual Limit Douluo development and seeks powerful soul beasts for his future rings 289 325 331 337.
- Xian Lin’er — Fellow academy leader who accompanies him on important business to prevent his drinking from derailing it. Both are later trapped in Mingdu 351 371.
- Xu Sanshi — Shrek talent whose defection Xuan Zi treats as betrayal. His attempt to kill Xu Sanshi is stopped by Xu Cheng 356 357.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Tournament Preparations and the Mingdou Disaster
- Arranges group training for Shrek’s main and reserve teams, confidently declaring an advantage after the powerful main lineup assembles 77.
- Intervenes during the Death Messenger’s corpse-bomb attack, but fails to capture the Soul King despite his own Level 98 cultivation. Yao Haoxuan dies, Chen Zifeng is taken away, and several main-team members suffer severe injuries 80 81.
- Returns Gongyang Mo and Xi Xi to Shrek for treatment, then offers to resign as Inspection Corps deputy commander and Pavilion elder. Mu En prevents his departure 81 82.
Tournament Defeat and the Attempt to Claim Xu Cheng
- Delays intervention when Ma Xiaotao becomes a Black Phoenix, hoping she will first defeat the Sun Moon team despite the danger to both sides 106 107.
- Recognizes Xu Cheng’s Ultimate Ice as the power Shrek has sought to suppress Ma Xiaotao’s Evil Fire and immediately decides to claim him 107.
- Plans to exploit the Star Luo Emperor’s attempt to detain Xu Cheng and abduct him to Shrek. He subsequently offers recruitment with the prospect of becoming Sea God Pavilion Master 115 119.
- Receives Mu En’s warning that undetected missiles carrying dummy warheads have appeared over Shrek City, demonstrating that Xu Cheng can threaten the academy directly 120.
- Shrek’s team finishes in the round of sixteen, after which Wang Yan brings his accusations against Xuan Zi before the Pavilion 123.
Ma Xiaotao’s Abduction
- His arrival initially causes Zhongli Wu and the Zhongli brothers to withdraw while observing Ma Xiaotao 130.
- During her later abduction, he follows a suspicious black-robed man outside Shrek City. The man reveals a fallen-angel martial soul and strength comparable to his own, keeping him away from the rescue battle 137.
- Returns only after the kidnappers have escaped, leaving Mu En exhausted and the academy’s leaders increasingly dissatisfied with his reliability 137.
Tang San’s Apprenticeship and Sunset Forest
- Accepts Tang San instead of Xiao Xiao, but refuses his request to rescue someone held by Di Tian and directs him to begin cultivation in the Outer Court 154.
- Agrees to investigate immortal herbs in Sunset Forest. Before leaving, he repeatedly slaps Zhou Yi and orders her permanently expelled for neglecting and targeting Tang San 175 186.
- Offers no cultivation method during the expedition, insists that cultivation depends on the individual, and sends Tang San to gather food 176 182.
- Sleeps through Tang San’s confrontation with Mu Xue and Vina. After discovering his disciple frozen and critically wounded, he seeks retaliation, only to be stopped by Du Busi 183 185.
- Brings Tang San before the Pavilion to explain the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. Mu En assigns him and other elders to investigate the secret realm’s entry requirements 186.
Assault on Mingdu and Succession
- Supports Tang San’s proposal to attack the Nine Treasures Glazed Tile Sect for its valuables during the allied invasion of the Sun Moon Empire 265.
- Opens an underground route for Shrek’s forces using his Martial Soul Avatar 273.
- Attempts to prevent allied factions from withdrawing after Mu En vanishes with Xu Cheng and Di Tian. Elder Lin and Elder Zhuang argue that saving Shrek must take priority 282.
- Accuses Zhang Lexuan of betrayal at Mingdu’s southern defenses. She answers by exposing her imperial origins, Mu En’s destruction of her adoptive family, and Xuan Zi’s responsibility for the earlier expedition deaths 284.
- Leads Shrek’s surviving members out through an opening created after Mu En reaches an agreement with Xu Cheng 285.
- Becomes Sea God Pavilion Master after Mu En’s death; the elders subsequently nominate Bei Bei for future succession 289.
Shrek’s Decline and Final Encirclement
- Proposes buying Sun Moon artificial soul rings when soul-beast hunting restrictions leave Shrek without practical alternatives, then discovers their prices threaten the academy’s finances 323.
- Seeks high-quality soul beasts for Bei Bei and attacks the Sea Princess while instructing Elder Song to seize the accompanying mermaids 325 331.
- Rejects restarting the ultimate individual soldier plan, directing Bei Bei to focus on Limit Douluo strength. He maintains that divine support will eventually restore Shrek’s supremacy 337.
- Tries to kill the defecting Xu Sanshi, is overpowered and ordered out of Mingdu by Xu Cheng, and later has his pressure blocked by Jing Hongchen when confronting Tiantian 356 357.
- Remains in Mingdu to negotiate soul-tool purchases after the tournament. When the Sun Moon invasion begins, mechas surround him and Xian Lin’er before they can leave; Shrek City subsequently falls 365 371.
Holy Spirit Cult Allegations
- Origin: Xu Cheng sarcastically labels him the Holy Spirit Cult’s “Grand Supreme Elder,” recasting his repeated failures as deliberate undercover operations 92.
- Spread: His attempt to recruit Xu Cheng and promise him Pavilion leadership appears to confirm the claim to frightened Shrek students. Wang Yan formally reports him, while Xiao Xiao and Wang Dong hide from him 119 123 147.
- Actual affiliation: The undercover claim is presented as a falsehood that takes root through suspicion, not as a confirmed Cult position. Mu En considers him incapable of betraying Shrek 82 119.
- Separate knowledge: Xuan Zi does know about Mu En’s plot against Zhang Lexuan’s adoptive family and recalls that Holy Spirit Cult personnel were involved. This does not establish the invented “Grand Supreme Elder” title as genuine 284.
