Background / History
Original Tang Sect
Tang San originally belonged to a Tang Sect in another world, based in Ba-Shu. Adopted by an outer-sect elder, he secretly learned cultivation methods reserved for inner-sect disciples of the Tang bloodline. Pursued for violating sect rules, he eventually jumped from a cliff 135 184.
Tang Wen, the original sect’s inner-sect senior sister, participated in the pursuit. She later recalls his promise never to spread its secret arts beyond the sect or forget his roots 135 146.
Life on the Douluo Continent
After transmigrating, Tang San became the son of Tang Hao and Ah Yin. Accounts of his childhood describe Tang Hao drinking and neglecting him after Ah Yin’s sacrifice, leaving Tang San to cook for himself and his father while relying on villagers’ help. Old Jack also secured his work-study place and escorted him to the academy 50 127.
Tang San received free Martial Soul awakening and financial assistance from Spirit Hall. He later founded the continent’s Tang Sect using techniques brought from his previous world 127 135 196.
Xu Cheng cites Tang San’s history when challenging the distinction between revered heroes and Evil Soul Masters. According to his account, Tang San was the seventh person to emerge from Slaughter City, whose qualifying matches required at least nine hundred killings. Tang Ya initially defends those victims as vicious criminals; the passage presents a dispute over Tang San’s reputation, not a formal Evil Soul Master classification 6.
Godhood and Control of Douluo Star
After ascending, Tang San sought to make Douluo Star his family’s domain. Tang Hao devoured the plane’s spirit, while Ah Yin fused with the Golden Tree and consumed souls within it to consolidate her control 126 152.
Tang San also manipulated the region around the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. He permitted poisonous miasma and forest devastation to protect it as a private Tang-family garden, and used a spirit-gathering array to sever a dragon vein, divide Heaven Dou, and prevent continental unification 186.
His legacy concealed the origin and quality of the Tang Sect’s arts. Later disciples received weakened versions rather than the authentic techniques he practiced; the inherited Mysterious Heaven Skill was described as less than one-tenth as effective as the original 135 136.
Appearance
- Initial mortal vessel: An approximately eleven-year-old, scrawny boy in tattered clothing. The body belonged to an orphan who had starved beside a street in Heaven Dou City 126.
- After shelter at the smithy: Became sturdy and well-fed, undermining the destitute image he tried to present in prison 132.
- Lasting injury: Military punishment damaged his left leg. Later opportunities at Shrek reduced the injury’s effects without fully healing it 142 183.
- After further injuries: Appeared before Shrek’s elders in a wheelchair 186.
- Divine manifestation: Appeared as a pale-blue figure amid ocean-like divine power when descending to the Clear Sky Sect 287.
Personality
Tang San places exceptional importance on maintaining a noble public image. He wants future generations to praise his achievements and fears that exposure of his stolen techniques and weakened inheritance will destroy his standing as the Tang Sect’s ancestor 133 146 196.
His gratitude is conditional on deference. Although Tie Niu and his wife feed him and spend their savings supporting his work, he considers perceived insults sufficient to erase their kindness. He similarly expects Tang Ya to bow once she learns his identity and contemplates killing her when she challenges him 127 145 146.
His confidence rests on the success of his earlier life. He credits himself with leading the Seven Devils to godhood, overthrowing Spirit Hall, and founding the Tang Sect, while overlooking the protection and opportunities supplied by others. This leads him to expect his renewed plans to succeed naturally 240.
Tang San can suppress anger and play an innocent child when survival requires it. Beneath that performance, he repeatedly treats humiliation as grounds for revenge—even against guards, benefactors, and sect descendants 126 132 133 146.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
Tang San possesses Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer. Residual divine power reshapes his mortal vessel’s Martial Souls to match those of his original body 126.
- The combination, together with innate full soul power, helps establish his credibility as a Clear Sky Sect descendant 142.
- He uses the same traits as evidence when revealing his identity to Tang Ya 145.
- He can manifest the Clear Sky Hammer while presenting his credentials during negotiations 240.
Blue Silver Grass Control
Tang San uses Blue Silver Grass to restrain opponents and control the battlefield 224 347.
- Blue Silver Entanglement: Releases numerous blue vines streaked with gold from beneath the arena floor 347.
- Paralysis: His vines numb trapped opponents and progressively suppress their movements 347.
- Group restraint: Subdues most of the Mingyu Sect team in the opening exchange 347.
- Life-force draining: Xu Cheng states that Tang San’s Martial Soul could drain those it entangled, comparing it with Tang Ya’s devouring abilities 6.
Tang Sect Secret Arts
Tang San retains the authentic arts learned in his original world rather than the weakened versions inherited by later disciples 126 135 136.
- Mysterious Heaven Skill: Cultivates internal power, nourishes meridians, strengthens his physique, and helps him recover from injuries. It does not fully repair his untreated damage 127 136 168.
- Purple Demon Eye: Produces a purple shimmer in his eyes and supports long-distance observation; he uses it like a telescope to identify Vina and Mu Xue 127 185.
- Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track: Provides rapid footwork and movement, allowing his Soul Grandmaster avatar to guide others at considerable speed 182 183.
- Mysterious Jade Skill: Practiced alongside his movement techniques and other secret arts during waterfall training 182.
- Hidden-weapon craftsmanship: Enables him to manufacture weapons from refined iron, though poor materials prevent him from producing higher-ranked designs 127.
Divine Power and Soul Separation
Tang San’s original body is a God King with power far beyond mortal cultivators. He regards destroying Douluo Star with a light gesture as within his capabilities, but Evil and Goodness restrict his ability to intervene 126 264.
- Separates a sliver of divine soul and sends it into a dead child’s body to operate covertly in the mortal world 126.
- Reduces the avatar’s residual divine power almost to nothing to avoid detection 127.
- Completely severs the avatar’s divine sense from the original body; it cannot communicate its discoveries or losses back to him 133 146 313.
- The isolated avatar believes its death would scatter its soul without the original body noticing 146.
- Divine Descent: Enhances selected allies; Xu Sanshi receives a second Martial Soul evolution and reaches Level 83 Soul Douluo 341.
Forbidden Curses and Imprints
Tang San transmits forbidden Divine Realm curses to strengthen the Clear Sky Sect through his connections with Da Ming and Er Ming 142.
- Caged Bird: Traps a target’s Sea of Consciousness and enforces obedience through severe pain. Tang Chao turns this curse against Tang San’s own avatar 142.
- Divine Sense Imprint: Leaves an imprint in Wang Dong’er’s Sea of Consciousness. Xu Cheng’s examination of it exposes much of Tang San’s plan for her 313.
Arrays
- Spirit-Gathering Array: Tang San credits it with helping the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well’s plants grow into hundred-thousand-year Soul Beasts 185.
- Dragon-vein severance: Uses the array to split a dragon vein and encourage political fragmentation rather than unification 186.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Sea God Trident — Divine artifact used against Cain and later wielded during his confrontation with Wang Dong’er’s team 349 353.
- Eight Spider Lances — Xu Cheng identifies their ability to drain life force when questioning Tang San’s moral distinction from Evil Soul Masters 6.
- Weakened Sleeve Sword and Flying God Claw — Manufactured during his first month at Tie Niu’s smithy using ordinary refined iron 127.
- Sleeve Arrows and small hidden weapons — Used as part of his limited early arsenal; displaying them also draws Tang Ya into a private meeting 145 183.
- Buddha’s Fury Tang Lotus — A weapon he manufactured using authentic Tang Sect knowledge, described as capable of killing nearly a hundred Soul Saints 135 136.
Relationships
- Tang Hao — Father. Tang San prioritizes the family’s larger plan even when Tang Hao’s separation from the plane spirit threatens his life, then borrows Life’s power to keep him alive 66 126.
- Ah Yin — Mother. Her concealed control of the Golden Tree remains one of his potential sources of influence after his restrictions 126.
- Xiao Wu — Wife in the Divine Realm. His avatar nevertheless considers pursuing Jiang Nannan, rationalizing a new relationship as a sacrifice for the continent 240.
- Xiao Qi — Daughter. Plans to recover her soul from the Silver Dragon King and place it in Wang Dong’er’s body 287 353.
- Wang Dong / Wang Dong’er — Intended vessel for Xiao Qi and, briefly, master of his enslaved avatar. He becomes furious when she independently forges her Martial Soul 142 353.
- Tang Ya — Successor of the Tang Sect he founded. Initially reveres him, but rejects his authority after learning the origin of his techniques and their deliberate weakening 6 145 146.
- Tang Wen — Senior sister from the original Tang Sect. Confronts him over his broken promises and becomes Tang Ya’s teacher 135 146.
- Xu Cheng — Principal obstacle to his lower-realm plans. Tang San eventually concludes that Xu Cheng threatens both continental control and the Divine Realm 287.
- Xuan Zi — Mortal avatar’s teacher and protector. Tang San relies heavily on his strength, but Xuan Zi’s drunken sleep leaves him defenseless during a critical confrontation 154 176 183 185.
- Da Ming and Er Ming — Divine officials and Clear Sky Sect leaders who support his schemes. His avatar considers blaming them for Xiao Qi’s soul-fragment troubles if necessary 142 287.
- Evil and Goodness — Gods who expose and restrict his interference with Douluo Star, forcing him to resort to covert action 66 126.
- Dai Huabin — Recruited ally. Tang San offers support for his revenge and uses him in plans to recreate the Shrek Seven Devils 224 240.
- Vina and Mu Xue — Enemies from his imprisonment and later forest encounter. Their punishment leaves lasting injuries, and a subsequent battle ends with Vina freezing him 133 142 183.
- Tie Niu and his wife — Benefactors who support his mortal avatar and hope to adopt him. His refusal of household registration contributes to his arrest 127 132.
- Jiang Nannan — Recruitment target and later romantic pursuit. She rejects his advances and repeatedly defeats him in the arena 240 264.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Divine Restrictions and Covert Descent
Evil and Goodness strip Tang San of direct control over Douluo Star. He responds by creating an isolated mortal avatar, intending to rise again and lead the Original Continent’s three kingdoms against the Sun Moon Empire 126 146.
The avatar begins at a struggling blacksmith’s shop, only to discover that Soul Tools have displaced traditional smithing and Tang Sect weapon production. His plan to obtain another free awakening and subsidies from Spirit Hall also fails because that institution no longer exists 126 127.
Imprisonment and Clear Sky Sect Enslavement
While traveling toward the Sun Moon Empire, Tang San is detained because he lacks identification. His mistreatment of Tie Niu’s household is exposed, and Vina recalls his release after Mu Xue demands punishment 132 133.
After enduring thirty military-cudgel blows and spending a month recovering, he approaches Wang Dong’s group. Tang Chao awakens his Martial Souls but makes him Wang Dong’s household slave, using Caged Bird to enforce obedience. Wang Dong renames him Tang Que because his use of the ancestor’s name violates a rule he himself established 136 142.
Rejection by the Tang Sect
Tang San reveals himself to Tang Ya, expecting reverence and a powerful ally. Instead, Tang Wen’s appearance confirms his original-world history, and Tang Ya confronts him over the weakened techniques inherited by her family 145 146.
Tang Ya declares herself the continent’s true Tang Sect leader and severs his connection with the sect. Xu Cheng secretly witnesses the confrontation 146.
Shrek Cultivation and Failed Recovery
Xuan Zi accepts Tang San as his disciple. Tang San later becomes a class monitor through winning Zhou Yi’s favor, despite strength insufficient to distinguish him from stronger classmates 154 168.
His dependence on Xuan Zi backfires when the teacher sleeps through his battle with Vina and Mu Xue. A later attempt to enter the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well’s secret realm also fails: Electrolux has explicitly excluded Tang San under Xu Cheng’s instructions 183 185.
Collapse of His Public Image
The Legend of Tang San publicly depicts his original-world theft of Tang Sect techniques and his neglected childhood. Audience members begin questioning textbook claims that he created the sect’s arts himself 196.
The Star Luo royal newspaper subsequently replaces the former heroic narrative with The History of Tang San’s Crimes, signaling an official retreat from the reverence maintained for ten thousand years 238.
Alliance-Building in Mingdu
As a Shrek exchange student, Tang San attempts to recreate the original Seven Devils by binding talented students and their factions together. He recruits Dai Huabin and approaches the Holy Spirit Cult, hoping to turn it against the Sun Moon Empire and recruit Ma Xiaotao 224 240.
The scheme rests on incomplete information: he knows Xu Cheng is a Sun Moon prince but not that he is the cult’s Holy Son. His attempt to recruit Jiang Nannan also develops into persistent, rejected romantic advances 240 264.
Failed Reunion and Further Divine Intervention
After being rescued by Er Ming, the avatar reveals its identity to Da Ming and Er Ming and hopes to reunite with the original Tang San. Instead, the original sends down another divine-sense strand and instructs the sect leaders to cooperate with the approaching Abyss Plane 287 288.
Later attempts to contact the original body still fail because Tang San himself blocked that route before descending 313.
Tournament Confrontations
Tang San leads the Clear Sky Sect team and declares Sun Moon teams mortal enemies. His vines quickly disable most Mingyu Sect competitors, while Cain forces him to use the Sea God Trident before surrendering to protect her disciples 347 349.
His confrontation with Wang Dong’er escalates when he discovers she has reforged her Martial Soul. Treating her as a vessel rather than an independent person, he condemns the change and raises the Trident. Wang Qiu’er intercepts his assault with strength he judges comparable to a peak Rank 94 Titled Douluo or higher 353 354.
Notable Quotes
“Back then, I rose to godhood from a sky-collapsing start with nothing but Blue Silver Grass and a Clear Sky Hammer. Naturally, I can do it again!” 126
“You are the Tang Sect Leader, and I am the Tang Sect’s Ancestor!” 146
Trivia
- Two of his own safeguards turn against his avatar: the Caged Bird curse enslaves him, while the taboo against using his name forces him to accept “Tang Que” 142.
- His covert descent is so thoroughly isolated that the original Tang San sends another divine-sense strand rather than recognizing and retrieving the first 287 288.
- Despite his private contempt for Evil Soul Masters, he seeks an alliance with the Holy Spirit Cult when he believes it can undermine the Sun Moon Empire 240.
