Background / History

Warring States period

Tobirama served as the Senju Clan’s second-in-command and principal strategist. His rivalry with Uchiha Izuna drove much of his early research: Izuna’s Sharingan gave him a combat advantage and allowed him to copy Tobirama’s painstakingly developed ninjutsu. Tobirama devised powerful Water Release techniques, the Bringer-of-Darkness Technique, and Flying Thunder God to counter the Uchiha 3 5 7 28.

After grievously wounding Izuna with Flying Thunder God Slash, Tobirama was stabbed through the chest during Watanabe Ichiro’s ambush. Exhausted from his duel, he could not evade the attack. Hashirama’s treatment kept him alive, and Tobirama recognized the embedded blade’s abnormal chakra in time to attempt a warning before the attacker struck Hashirama 3 4 5.

Founding and administering Konoha

The Senju–Uchiha alliance brought Tobirama’s battlefield rivalry with Izuna into village politics. He argued for Hashirama to become Hokage and tried to secure support for the Senju, but Hashirama backed Madara instead. After Madara’s inauguration as First Hokage, Tobirama retreated toward laboratory work and occasional missions 7 8.

Watching Madara and Izuna make reasonably fair decisions softened his opinion of them. His own administrative intervention then ended their chronic overtime: he delegated routine decisions, assigned responsibility for disputes, and organized village work so efficiently that the leadership regained free afternoons 8 10 11 12.

Tobirama established the early Ninja Academy. When Hashirama succeeded Madara as Second Hokage, Tobirama took over the practical duties of the office. He was therefore the village’s effective administrator, not its formally appointed Second Hokage 12.

Academy attack and forbidden-technique research

During the Ninja Academy hostage incident, Tobirama discovered that the attacker’s seals did not transfer injuries as claimed; the black seal was actually a beneficial body-conditioning formula. A supposedly rescued child stabbed him in the temple and revealed explosive tags, forcing Tobirama to teleport the attacker away from the other children 13.

He brought the critically injured Izuna to Hashirama and Madara. Once Izuna’s memories and thoughts were found to be destroyed, Tobirama considered him dead and turned his research toward Impure World Reincarnation. Permission to observe Madara’s eye transplant also gave him new Sharingan data 14.

Ichiro’s rapid mastery of Flying Thunder God persuaded Tobirama to accept him as a personal disciple. Their first reincarnation experiment was sabotaged by Black Zetsu, but Tobirama later interpreted the damaged formula as Ichiro’s deliberate attempt to prevent Izuna’s revival. Rather than reject him, he viewed this supposed sabotage as part of an exceptionally calculated bid to seize control of the Uchiha Clan 17 19 22.

Hashirama’s decline and the Five Kage Summit

While Hashirama and Madara fought for seven days and nights, Tobirama stabilized Konoha and stationed a shadow clone near the battlefield with emergency supplies. Destroyed teleportation marks and the combatants’ failure to answer reverse summons prevented him from intervening. Afterward, he treated the gravely wounded Hashirama and helped circulate a cover story blaming Madara’s death on Black Zetsu 22 23 24.

Knowing Hashirama was near death, Tobirama and Ichiro planned to sell the tailed beasts for resources while concealing the danger posed by their potential release. Tobirama led the summit negotiations, but the meeting collapsed after an apparent Black Zetsu attack and Hashirama’s death 28 30 32.

Tobirama teleported to protect Hashirama’s corpse from Shukaku’s Tailed Beast Bomb. With nearby marks destroyed and insufficient chakra to reach distant ones, he used four Water Release techniques to weaken the blast. He preserved his brother’s body without a scratch but suffered catastrophic injuries himself. Ichiro secretly used Coincidence to make those injuries nonfatal, disguising the rescue as a Mangekyō ability 32 33.

After recovering enough to act, Tobirama sealed the tailed beasts and resumed negotiations. Following Ichiro’s defeat of the hostile forces, he arranged compensation payments and confiscated supplies from the defeated nations 34 36.

Acting Hokage

After the Uchiha elders’ collaboration with the Land of Lightning was exposed, Tobirama arrested those involved and transferred the clan’s Military Police Force duties to ANBU. He left the Third Hokage’s seat vacant and continued governing as Acting Hokage, questioning whether he deserved to stand alongside Madara and Hashirama on Hokage Rock 48.

With internal rebellion suppressed, he began preparing a Shinobi World Unification Plan focused on elite combat strength and foundational talent. He subsequently devoted more time to Impure World Reincarnation and spiritual-entity research while Ichiro increasingly coordinated village affairs 48 50.

Tobirama is pragmatic, sharp-tempered, and intensely protective of Hashirama. He frequently criticizes his brother’s softness and neglect of official duties, yet risks his life to save him—and later to preserve his body. His grief briefly overwhelms his scientific judgment when he mistakes Ichiro’s protective Wood Release for a final intervention from Hashirama 7 12 23 32 33.

His early hostility toward the Uchiha stems from nearly twenty years of lethal conflict, compounded by Izuna copying his inventions and taunting him. That prejudice is not fixed: Madara’s responsible leadership earns his respect, accepting Ichiro as a disciple marks a conscious break with his old assumptions, and by his Acting Hokage tenure he considers properly educated Uchiha indispensable defenders of Konoha 3 8 17 48.

Research is both his vocation and his refuge from politics. He is meticulous about testing and optimization, refusing to treat an incomplete technique as finished. His methods can also be ruthless: reincarnation experiments use human sacrifices, and he favors hard-line policies toward external enemies that Hashirama would resist 7 17 23 48 50.
