Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Full-potential release — temporary final-battle enhancement 31 A pill modified from the Akimichi Clan’s secret medicine unleashes the body’s full potential at the cost of severe backlash. With Hashirama already terminally weakened, this enhancement makes his last battle fatal.

Background / History

Childhood friendship

Hashirama meets Madara Uchiha beside a river during childhood. Both conceal their surnames, becoming stone-skipping rivals and training companions despite their clans’ hostility. There they also befriend Watanabe Ichiro, whose white hair and hairstyle remind Hashirama of his younger brother, Tobirama. Hashirama readily accepts Ichiro’s grilled fish, trusting his knowledge of medicine and his own constitution rather than worrying about poisoning 2.

When a blood feud makes Ichiro’s departure dangerous for their clans, neither Hashirama nor Madara can bring himself to kill him. Hashirama embraces him and wishes him well. Hashirama and Madara later break ties at the river, although their growing suspicions about each other’s identities make the separation less bitter 3.

Alliance proposal and assassination attempt

During a confrontation between the Senju and Uchiha brothers, Hashirama proposes ending the war through an alliance between their clans. He discards his sword and extends an undefended hand to Madara, arguing that their combined strength could gradually bring the fighting to an end 3.

The negotiation is interrupted when an attacker stabs Tobirama through the chest. Hashirama protects his brother with Wood Release, sends Wood Clones after the apparent assailant, and begins emergency treatment. His attention to Tobirama leaves him vulnerable to a second ambush: an enemy disguised as the embedded weapon nearly cuts off his head 4.

Hashirama survives through instinctive evasion, extraordinary vitality, and chakra reinforcement of his neck bones. Detecting a two-tomoe Sharingan initially makes him blame the Uchiha, but Madara identifies the attacker’s chakra as foreign to the clan. The attacker reveals himself as Watanabe Ichiro 4.

Despite his own neck wound, Hashirama continues treating Tobirama and the gravely wounded Uchiha Izuna. After Ichiro’s apparent death, he recognizes fragments of the Wood Release cane he once made for him. The fragments are buried beside the river with Ichiro’s remains and a wooden figure associated with their friendship 5 6 7.

Founding Konoha

Madara accepts Hashirama’s alliance proposal, and the Senju and Uchiha sign an agreement as equals. Hashirama’s treatment saves Izuna’s life, strengthening Madara’s willingness to cooperate and prompting Izuna to reconsider the value of having such a powerful healer as an ally 7.

Hashirama supports Madara rather than insisting on becoming Hokage himself. He helps Madara win the leadership selection, blocks Tobirama’s underhanded attempts to change the outcome, and enthusiastically celebrates Madara’s inauguration as the First Hokage 7.

Poorly suited to paperwork, Hashirama finds a more productive role in construction. He uses Wood Release to build houses and bridges, improving Konoha’s infrastructure and earning praise from civilians 8.

Second Hokage

Once village affairs become manageable, Hashirama resumes the Tailed Beast Collection Plan with Madara. He also teaches at the early Ninja Academy established by Tobirama; several of Ichiro’s disguises pass through the school as students of the Senju brothers 12.

Konoha elects its Hokage every five years and permits consecutive terms. With Madara’s strong backing, Hashirama becomes the Second Hokage. He attends the handover ceremony but leaves the actual duties to Tobirama, transferring his personal guard, Watanabe Ichiro, to his brother as well 12.

His conciliatory leadership complements Madara’s earlier forceful reforms. Hashirama reassures dissatisfied clans and helps settle their grievances, contributing to the village’s later internal stability 48.

Conflict with Madara

After Izuna’s death, Hashirama supports Madara’s pursuit of Black Zetsu even when other nations protest his conduct. His official response invites anyone with complaints to discuss them with him personally in the Land of Fire 30.

Their friendship fractures over Madara’s proposal to unite the shinobi world by force. Hashirama objects that starting a war would destroy the peace they worked to establish. Madara counters that resource shortages make their existing peace temporary and that unification could remove the causes of war 18.

The dispute culminates in a seven-day battle. Hashirama’s towering wooden golem confronts Madara’s Perfect Susanoo, and Madara dies in a direct clash rather than a surprise attack. Hashirama survives heavily wounded and exhausted; seeing his friend’s body causes him to vomit blood and collapse further 22 23 24.

Tobirama’s examination reveals failing organs, weakened chakra, and a Sage Body no longer healing properly. Hashirama subsequently accepts a fabricated account in which Madara died defending Konoha from Black Zetsu, preserving his friend’s public reputation as a village protector 24.

Final battle and death

Although still seriously ill, Hashirama attends the Five Kage Summit. He imitates Madara’s imposing manner rather than bowing to the other leaders. His apparent strength at the meeting is restored by an unspecified method associated with Tobirama; the passage does not establish a permanent recovery 28 29 30.

When Ichiro appears disguised as Black Zetsu, Hashirama blames him for Tobirama’s earlier injuries, Izuna’s death, and Madara’s transformation into an advocate of conquest. He demands the modified Akimichi medicine from Tobirama and commits himself to one final battle 31.

Hashirama and the disguised Ichiro clash with forests, enormous wooden figures, and Wood Dragons. The other four Kage can offer only limited support before being drawn away by Ichiro’s clones. Hashirama ultimately falls and dies on the battlefield 31 32.

Shukaku then attempts to destroy his corpse with a Tailed Beast Bomb. Tobirama retrieves and shields the body, suffering catastrophic injuries while keeping Hashirama’s remains intact. News of Hashirama’s death provokes outrage among Konoha’s civilians, who remember a Hokage who freely mingled with them and put on no airs 32 33 38.

Appearance

  • Childhood hairstyle: Madara remembers Hashirama’s “goofy childhood bowl cut” when considering his alliance proposal 3.

Personality

Hashirama is warm, trusting, and openly affectionate. He embraces Ichiro before their separation, praises Madara without embarrassment, and describes Tobirama as “sensible and adorable” even when the remark mortifies his brother. He repeatedly assumes that interpersonal disputes can be resolved through greater understanding 3 7 11.

Peace matters more to him than personal office or his clan’s advantage. Unless Konoha’s safety or Tobirama’s life is threatened, he readily compromises and considers other clans’ interests. This generosity frustrates Tobirama, who sees the Senju losing influence while Hashirama refuses to fight over their share of authority 10.

His easygoing manner contrasts sharply with his aversion to administration. Documents make him miserable, and he seeks diversions through sparring, outings, gambling, and construction. His protectiveness can also override tactical judgment: during an explosion, he shields Tobirama with his own body and afterward admits that he panicked and forgot to use Wood Release first 8 10 13 18.

Abilities & Skills

Wood Release

  • Offense and protection: Raises thick trunks to surround Tobirama, blocks attacks, and drives enemies back while continuing medical treatment 4.
  • Wood Clones: Creates independent pursuers so he can remain beside an injured ally 4.
  • Deep Forest Emergence: Produces a battlefield-wide forest during his final confrontation with the false Black Zetsu 31.
  • Wood Golem Technique: Uses a towering wooden golem against Madara’s Perfect Susanoo 22 24.
  • Wood Dragons: Deploys multiple dragons during his final battle 32.
  • Construction: Builds houses, bridges, and smaller objects such as Ichiro’s cane 7 8.
  • Chakra limitation: After medical treatment consumes most of his chakra, hastily raised wooden defenses survive only briefly against a massive explosive-tag blast 5.

Medical Ninjutsu

  • Keeps Tobirama alive after a precise, tearing wound to the heart, even while treating his own near-fatal neck injury 4.
  • Heals Izuna’s battlefield injuries sufficiently for him to recover quickly 7.
  • Is regarded as a master healer whom Tobirama attempts to summon during the attack on the Ninja Academy 13.
  • Is described as capable of saving Tobirama from catastrophic organ damage through an overwhelming application of healing chakra—had Hashirama still been alive 33.

Sage Body and Senju vitality

  • Possesses exceptional resilience, regeneration, and immense chakra reserves 4 13.
  • Survives a near-beheading partly because his vitality and reinforced neck bones stop the blade from passing completely through 4.
  • Rapidly regenerates scorched skin after shielding Tobirama from an explosion 13.
  • Lifespan cost: In this novel’s explicitly original setting, Senju regeneration consumes a finite capacity for cellular repair. Once that limit is reached, the body deteriorates beyond the help of medicine 24.
  • Not Senjutsu: Despite possessing a Sage Body, this version of Hashirama never learns Senjutsu 24.

Close combat and battlefield instincts

  • Uses a long sword during the Senju–Uchiha confrontation 3.
  • Reacts instinctively to a point-blank assassination attempt and automatically reinforces his body with chakra 4.
  • Recognizes Sharingan ocular chakra through years of fighting Uchiha opponents 4.
  • Moves too quickly for Ichiro’s three-tomoe Sharingan to follow during their final battle, forcing Ichiro to equip his Mangekyō 31.
  • Sensory weakness: His sensory abilities are described as comparatively poor, contributing to his failure to detect the weapon-disguise ambush 4.

Tailed beast capture

  • Organizes and resumes the Tailed Beast Collection Plan with Madara 12.
  • Repeatedly subdues Shukaku, whose resentment is especially strong because his insults earn him more beatings than the other beasts 32.

Teaching and reconciliation

  • Teaches students at Tobirama’s early Ninja Academy 12.
  • Advocates strengthening Konoha as a whole through sharing bloodline limits and secret techniques rather than concentrating power within individual clans 12.
  • Reassures the Hyuga after Madara intimidates them, repairs their damaged residence, and promises protection 48.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Long sword — Wielded in battle, then planted in the ground when he offers Madara an alliance 3.
  • Flying Thunder God-marked item — Allows Tobirama to teleport directly to his side; Tobirama uses it to retrieve his corpse 32.
  • Reverse Flying Thunder God patch — Receives another wearer’s summons and allows Hashirama to respond. Tobirama, Madara, and Ichiro possess matching patches 33.
  • Wood Release cane — Made for the earlier Watanabe Ichiro; its scorched fragments are later buried with Ichiro’s apparent remains 7.

Relationships

  • Tobirama Senju — Younger brother and last surviving sibling. Hashirama prioritizes his life over pursuing an attacker, while Tobirama handles much of his administrative work. Tobirama later risks his own life to protect Hashirama’s corpse 4 5 12 32 33.
  • Madara Uchiha — Childhood friend, battlefield rival, fellow village founder, and predecessor as Hokage. Their mutual affection survives years of clan warfare but ultimately cannot reconcile their opposing methods of pursuing peace 2 7 18 22 23.
  • Uchiha Izuna — Former enemy and later ally whose life Hashirama saves. Izuna recognizes the value of Hashirama’s power and healing, although he angrily ejects him when his attempts at paperwork become disruptive 7 8.
  • Watanabe Ichiro / Uchiha Ichiro — Ichiro’s earlier persona is a childhood friend who later nearly kills him; his child persona receives Hashirama’s care, help entering the Uchiha Clan, and protection of his ancestry. Hashirama does not recognize the deception behind Ichiro’s final Black Zetsu disguise 2 4 10 11 31.
  • Black Zetsu — The figure Hashirama holds responsible for the tragedies surrounding both founding clans. His fatal confrontation is actually with Ichiro impersonating Black Zetsu 31 32.
  • Senju Toka — Senju third-in-command to whom Hashirama delegates his Hokage duties before taking Madara gambling 18.
  • Konoha’s civilians — Admire his construction work and approachable conduct; react with disbelief and anger when his death is announced 8 38.
