History

The Emperor’s Apparent Assassination

During the Rite of Descension, Rex Lapis’s dragon body falls alongside Lin Yi. Ningguang announces that the Emperor has been assassinated, seals the scene with the Millelith, and orders Keqing to investigate suspicious people throughout Liyue Harbor. Lin Yi is detained because he fell beside the body 1.

The death is a deception: Morax remains alive as Zhongli. His retirement removes him from direct governance without ending his protection of Liyue 4 10.

Lin Yi’s Succession

Liyue’s public is told that the former Rex Lapis has ascended to a higher realm and that a new god has inherited his Gnosis. The announcement identifies Ningguang’s husband-to-be, Lin Yi, as that successor 3.

The succession initially alarms Cloud Retainer, Mountain Shaper, and Moon Carver, who question how the Emperor’s Gnosis could pass into a mortal’s hands. Ningguang also challenges Morax’s decision to appoint an inexperienced outsider rather than leave Liyue entirely to its people and the Qixing 3 13.

At his inauguration, Lin Yi introduces the additional divine title God of Infrastructure, presenting development as the focus of his rule. The ceremony is followed by his wedding to Ningguang 5.

Marriage and Human Rule

Ningguang intends the marriage to make a previously distant god familiar and approachable. She hopes that everyday contact will gradually turn the people’s dependence on divine guidance into ordinary respect, preparing Liyue for human rule 3.

Lin Yi supports that aim by publicly emphasizing Ningguang’s importance and directing part of the trust accorded to him toward her 6.

Authority and Responsibilities

Governance

  • Divine leadership: Lin Yi invokes possession of the Geo Gnosis as evidence that Liyue remains under a god’s rule 2.
  • Civil authority remains significant: His divine office does not allow him simply to bypass Ningguang, who represents Liyue’s authority and law 11.
  • Development: As the God of Infrastructure, he oversees the Guili Plains New District and the construction of a cement highway linking it to Liyue Harbor 5 57.
  • Public accountability: Accusations that the Emperor permits fraud threaten both his credibility and outsiders’ willingness to trade with Liyue 111 112.

Military Command and Protection

  • Direct retainers: The Rock Shadow Guards are selected by Lin Yi from the Millelith and answer directly to him, operating undercover throughout Liyue 101.
  • Wartime decisions: During the Dark Sea invasion, his arrival gives Liyue’s side the authority to pursue or end the conflict 83.
  • Defense of the nation: Lin Yi treats Liyue’s safety and stability as his responsibility, while Ningguang remains responsible for protecting its people during his absence 118.
  • Civilian protection: He encloses his battle with Zero inside a Divine Authority barrier to prevent innocent people from being harmed 108.

Ningguang’s Position as Empress

  • As the Emperor’s lawful wife, Ningguang is called Liyue’s Empress and the mother of Liyue 80 81 118.
  • During Lin Yi’s absence from the New District, she declares that her orders carry the same authority as those of Rex Lapis and leads soldiers against the invaders 80.
  • The Qixing explicitly acknowledge her command by awaiting the Empress’s orders 81.

Divine Authority and Symbols

Aspect Connection to the title
Geo Gnosis Symbolizes a god’s standing and dignity. Ningguang initially argues that trading it away would damage the Geo Archon’s majesty and Liyue’s reputation 13.
Recognition by Morax Lin Yi maintains that Morax’s acknowledgment establishes his position even without a Gnosis; Ningguang subsequently accepts that she had placed too much importance on it 15.
Inherited Geo Divine Authority Lin Yi inherits Morax’s distinctive authority. The Golden Body Demon God recognizes it and recalls his defeat by Morax and Azhdaha 93 94.
Vortex Vanquisher Identified as the former Emperor’s signature weapon; merely naming it draws a solemn reaction from the three adepti 4.
Geo King Garment Worn by Lin Yi in his role as the reigning Geo deity, though he also changes into ordinary sailing clothes aboard the Crux 87 121.

Prestige and Expectations

  • Recognition beyond Liyue: Jean uses the address “Emperor Lin Yi” when discussing his visit to Mondstadt 67.
  • Recognition among followers: Aboard the Crux, followers of the Geo Archon can sense his arrival through Divine Authority even if they have never seen him personally 121.
  • Deference: The Golden Body Demon God addresses Lin Yi as “Your Majesty the Emperor” and voluntarily enters his net after recognizing his authority 94 95.
  • Diplomatic dignity: Duo Jie’s demand that Lin Yi personally welcome him is treated as an affront to both the Emperor and Liyue. Lin Yi sends his guards instead 100 101.
  • Appearance does not guarantee recognition: Gunpowder merchants doubt Lin Yi’s identity when he receives them in plain, mud-stained clothes rather than extravagant dress 99.
  • Attacks carry national consequences: An attempt to harm Rex Lapis in Liyue’s capital is regarded as blasphemy and a provocation against the nation 110.

Burden of the Office

Lin Yi recognizes divine status as an “invisible shackle”: its prestige creates expectations that can conflict with a sensible retreat. He nevertheless considers survival more fundamental than maintaining appearances 71.

During the confrontation with Mie, his dwindling strength makes that burden concrete. Ningguang understands that his defeat would damage not only him but Liyue, and takes over the fight so he can recover 87.

Forms of Address

  • Emperor Lin Yi — Used by citizens, officials, and foreign leaders 56 67.
  • Lord Emperor — Used when directly addressing Lin Yi 108 111.
  • Your Majesty the Emperor — A deferential address used by the Golden Body Demon God 95.
  • Old Emperor — Distinguishes the retired Morax from the reigning Lin Yi 89.
  • This Emperor — Lin Yi’s self-reference when asserting his status or challenging opponents 49 79 140.
