"Machines... machines..."
"A machine is composed of multiple mechanisms and is used to transmit energy..."
Lorne muttered to himself as he lay in bed at the Azure Hotel.
"Meow!" The sleeping cat suddenly felt movement beneath her, let out a cry, and jumped off the bed.
"Lucky, is that you?" Lorne sat up in bed, still shaken.
"Meow." Orange Cat meowed in affirmation.
"That was terrifying. I actually dreamed about my major courses."
"A whole night of machines, machines, and more machines."
As he took in his surroundings, Lorne gradually calmed down.
"Right, I transmigrated."
For a moment, he felt rather melancholy.
"Meow?" Lucky looked puzzled beside him.
"I'm fine." Lorne rubbed her head.
"Come to think of it, when did I fall asleep? I didn't even change my clothes." Looking at what he was wearing, Lorne felt a little puzzled.
Given his habits, no matter how tired he was, he would never have gone to bed without even taking his clothes off.
"What happened?" Lorne rubbed his head, trying hard to recall the events of the previous night.
"Robot... Robot... Robot..."
"Why is my head full of Robots?!" Lorne was speechless. The word kept surfacing in his mind, refusing to go away.
"Robot, Sequence 8 of the Monster Pathway." Lorne suddenly frowned.
"How do I know that?" His pupils dilated slightly in utter shock.
Before he could recover from his shock, information surfaced in his mind.
"A Robot gains terrifying computational abilities and precise control. Every aspect of their physical capabilities improves significantly, making them naturally gifted in fields such as combat and shooting. They also gain the abilities of divination and anti-divination."
"I achieved Advancement? And these abilities..."
Well, how should I put it? This feels so ordinary... That was Lorne's first reaction after reviewing the abilities of a Robot.
If he had spent his own money buying the formula and ingredients, only to end up with a Potion whose abilities were this underwhelming, he would have been furious.
But in reality, he had done nothing and somehow achieved Advancement.
That left him wanting to complain but unable to find a reason. After all, he had gotten it for free!
"Are all the abilities of the Monster Pathway this abstract? Aren't there any that are a little flashier and more tangible?" After thinking it over, Lorne could only direct his resentment at the Pathway itself.
Although the immense computational abilities of a Robot did appeal to Lorne as a science and engineering student, he still hoped to gain abilities that manifested directly, since he had certain aspirations for the supernatural.
Surely the later Sequences of this Pathway won't be like this too? Lorne could not help wondering, suddenly worried about his future.
"Come to think of it, how exactly did I achieve Advancement?" He began exploring the possibilities.
"That corpse!"
"It was the transparent substance on that corpse."
Lorne remembered the corpse he had encountered the night before. He had clearly taken the transparent substance from it, yet when he returned, he discovered that the stuff had vanished.
"Could that corpse have been a Robot when he was alive? After he died, his power separated out, and I inherited it?"
That was the explanation Lorne found most plausible. It also lent support to an earlier idea of his-that Beyonder powers could be inherited.
"But isn't that too much of a coincidence? I've never been this lucky before."
"I probably won't get another windfall like this."
Unable to come up with an answer, Lorne turned his attention to another question.
"How did I absorb it? I clearly didn't do anything."
"I remember putting that transparent substance straight into my inside pocket. It was pressed right against my chest."
Could it be that the Beyonder substance released from a corpse wasn't meant to be mixed into a Potion and drunk like Beyonder Characteristics, but absorbed through direct contact with the body?
"If I get the chance, I can test it in the future." With his own experience to back it up, Lorne had considerable faith in this guess.
"Now that I've figured out the advancement, there's only one thing left."
"That strange gaze." Just thinking about what he had felt while bathing sent goosebumps all over him.
"Although it didn't trigger a warning from fate, still..."
"But if the heat in my body was caused by my advancement, then it had nothing to do with that gaze. Perhaps..."
"No, how could a Hidden Being that enjoys spying on people in the bath possibly be anything good?" Lorne shook his head and considered the worst-case scenario.
"Could it have noticed me because I took something from that corpse?"
"That doesn't make sense. How would that explain the earlier nightmare?"
"Last time, it happened after I went to Iron Cross Street, found that Notebook, and wrote the report letter."
"This time, it happened after I returned from the Seer Club..."
Could that Notebook have attracted the covetous attention of a Hidden Being?
There shouldn't be anything else besides that Notebook, right? Although I'd just made some money, I wasn't exactly rich.
Surely no Hidden Being would really do something so pointless over a few hundred pounds.
After turning it over in his mind, Lorne felt that only the mysterious Notebook could have drawn a Hidden Being's attention. The formulas in that Notebook proved that it had to be connected to the Seer Pathway.
And the fellow he had met yesterday, the one covering his eyes, was most likely a Beyonder too. Given that he had appeared at the Divination Club, he might even have been a genuine Seer.
"Could there be something wrong with that Seer?" Lorne recalled how a single glance at that fellow yesterday had left him half-blind.
"No, the Hidden Being spying on me should be fairly high-level. That Seer probably isn't powerful enough."
After a brief silence...
"I get it. That Seer serves the Hidden Being. I glanced at him with Spirit Vision and inadvertently angered the Being behind him." Lorne had thought of a possibility.
"The main problem now is that I don't know how much attention that Hidden Being is paying me. After all, the Notebook isn't with me anymore..."
"There shouldn't be any reason to keep watching me, but that prying gaze..."
Wait, I don't actually have to take this risk myself... A sudden flash of inspiration struck Lorne.
"If I find out who that Seer is and report him to the authorities, couldn't I use their power to trace him back to that voyeuristic
"Hidden Being and get rid of them both?"
"Even if the authorities are hostile to transmigrators, they certainly won't go easy on a Hidden Being that might be an evil god."
"And even if that Seer is innocent, his condition that day was suspicious. Reporting a dangerous, unstable individual is perfectly reasonable too."
"That's right. That's what I'll do. Iron Cross Street was peaceful after my last report. Maybe the authorities already dealt with the abnormal situation. Since it worked last time, it should work this time too."
With a plan in mind, Lorne perked up and prepared to act.
Backlund.
"At this hour, the Tarot Club meeting should be starting soon." Audrey looked at the clock before her with some excitement.
She closed her eyes, and before long, she arrived in the space filled with gray fog.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Fool." Audrey greeted him elegantly, but when she raised her head to look at the Fool, she suddenly froze.
Something had changed about Mr. Fool!
Although she could not make out his face, Audrey noticed from his silhouette through the fog that Mr. Fool was wearing a pair of pitch-black sunglasses.
