"Good deeds are rewarded, and evil deeds punished..."
Earl Hall looked at the crooked handwriting on the stationery, and the corner of his mouth twitched.
After so many years of wielding immense influence in Backlund's political and business circles, this was the first time he had seen such a bizarre, absurd letter.
Was this a prank some bored child had dreamed up? It even demanded that he copy out a hundred letters and send them off?
"Is something wrong, Father?"
Seeing his father's peculiar expression, Hibbert also picked up a letter from the housekeeper's tray and lowered his head to read it.
"This... who came up with this idiotic prank?"
Hibbert was nowhere near as composed as his father. He frowned, his expression darkening instantly. "Is this an insult to the Hall Family?"
At first glance, the letter looked like a poor joke, but considered in light of their family's current circumstances, wasn't it an outright curse?
The letter kept going on about "evil deeds being punished." Their family had recently suffered misfortune because of Alfred's situation. Was the sender suggesting that this was the Hall Family's just deserts?
Their family had donated so much money to charity. Had they ever committed some heinous crime that enraged heaven and earth?
Utterly ridiculous!
Hibbert snorted inwardly. He was certain this was another underhanded trick devised by some political enemy. Smearing them in the papers wasn't enough; they had to disgust them with such shabby tactics, sending these letters specifically to get under their skin.
"Whew... heh, heh..."
Seeing his eldest son getting worked up, Earl Hall instead put down the letter and chuckled twice.
"Father, I'm sorry. I lost my composure." Realizing that his emotions had gotten the better of him, Hibbert hurriedly lowered his head.
