To rescue Elland, the passenger ship's captain, and his two adoring fans, Donna and her younger brother, who had been trapped in the harbor's Telegraph Office, he and Danitz had been forced to leave the relatively safe ship and venture into Bansy Harbor, which was shrouded in an eerie power.
After joining forces to deal with a corrupted bishop and several crazed believers, they had finally made it back aboard without any lasting harm.
Still, the trip hadn't been without its rewards. Captain Elland had given him a Fishman's swim bladder as thanks, while Donna's family and the other rescued passengers had pooled together a monetary gift totaling one hundred and fifty pounds.
For Klein, who was always carefully budgeting his expenses, that was a sizable windfall.

Klein neither looked back nor slowed down. He merely changed direction naturally, walking toward a young man leaning against the cabin wall with an old newspaper in his hand.
The young man wore an ordinary flax-colored coat and looked like any other second-class passenger.
The instant they passed each other, Klein spun around. His right hand seized the young man's shoulder with ruthless precision and pinned him firmly against the cabin wall.
