"and Sequence 5-Beyonders can't control this. A portion will naturally be passed on every time."

"Children like that are born with greater spiritual perception and certain incomplete Beyonder abilities?" Understanding dawned on Audrey as she realized where certain unusual people came from. Neph turned to Alger, who caught her hint after a few breaths and explained:

"Yes. They're effectively half a Sequence 9, with fixed characteristics. If they want to become Beyonders, they can only choose the corresponding pathway.

"Of course, such people aren't necessarily the product of inheritance. They may also have received a god's favor or suffered the corruption of an evil spirit. Quite a few factors can produce the same effect. Also, the child of a High-Sequence Beyonder might be born at Sequence 5. This is one of the very few ways to skip sequences without much risk of losing control."

"So that's how it works." Audrey sighed in satisfaction.

Fors gained some understanding and pressed on. "What about Beyonders at Sequence 7, Sequence 8, and Sequence 9?"

Neph glanced at Fors and smiled enigmatically.

"Normally, having children is unlikely to make you lose your Beyonder characteristics, but that's not absolute. Take your current situation, for instance, since you consumed an extra Apprentice potion-"
