Approaching Science
Dealing with fanatics was the thing Neph hated most, bar none.
Granted, Leomaster could not actually do anything to her, but Neph remembered that he counted as an ally. If possible, she still wanted to try humoring him.
Her departure was almost frantic. Once she finally found somewhere to catch her breath, Neph decided she would do nothing else that day.
Klein contacted her the following evening. After explaining that he had received an invitation to the Macht family's weekend ball, he brought up another matter. "Do you remember that garment factory? The one where Old Kohler worked."
"Of course I do." Neph nodded.
Klein told her, "The official Beyonders have finished their investigation. The results were published in the newspaper. Guess what caused it?"
Neph hesitated, then shook her head.
"Gin poisoning," Klein answered.
"That sounds obviously fake, doesn't it?" Neph frowned. "It has to be an excuse to fob off ordinary people."
"Yes." Klein nodded, then gave a helpless smile. "But I think they had no choice. I suspect they never figured out exactly what was wrong with that steam boiler."
Neph looked at him in confusion. Klein sighed and explained helplessly, "While passing by in a carriage, I took the opportunity to send Seniors over to have a look.
"First, I need to make this clear: there were no Beyonder factors involved in this incident at all. Although gin poisoning wasn't the cause, it really had nothing to do with Beyonder powers. The problem lay with that newly installed steam boiler."
Neph nodded and continued watching Klein. With an odd expression, he said, "In fact, judging by the revelations from my divination, I suspect the cause was-"
He paused, his expression growing stranger still, as though saying it aloud was particularly difficult. "-infrasound."
"Huh?" Neph was dumbfounded.
