"Nighthawk Klein Moretti, it's your turn to be examined."
Just as Klein was thinking back on the examinations he had faced over the past week, a voice came from outside the room.
After Klein answered, the door slowly opened, and two Nighthawks wearing red gloves and black trench coats walked in.
Nighthawks dressed like this were the most unusual group within the Church of Evernight, the result of a political compromise with the other churches.
Unlike the ordinary Nighthawks stationed in various cities, they were handpicked elites who faced the most dangerous work: pursuing dangerous criminals and worshippers of evil gods across regions and even national borders.
They could be considered the Church of Evernight's middle- and upper-ranking members, below only its twenty-two Archbishops and Senior Deacons.
Klein nodded, recalling what he had been thinking about over the past few days.
Captain Dunn and Miss Daly had passed their examinations without incident, confirming that neither had been corrupted by an evil god-especially Captain Dunn. Klein still vaguely remembered how the Archbishop who had come here reacted upon hearing that the wound in Captain Dunn's chest had healed under a silvery-black light.
The Archbishop's expression had changed drastically on the spot. Even learning that Mr. L of the Aurora Order had fought alongside them had not made him look so grim. He had immediately subjected Captain Dunn to an examination of the highest order.
Klein even remembered the Archbishop visibly breathing a sigh of relief once the examination was complete.
His other Nighthawk companions had also passed. The only one who had failed was, surprisingly, Leonard-though that was within Klein's expectations. After all, Leonard's obviously troubled manner really did look rather suspicious.
Later, however, Klein had seen a somewhat dejected Leonard standing with the other Nighthawks, apparently none the worse for
