"Join Root?" Obito was a little surprised.
He had thought these two had come looking for trouble, but it turned out Danzo had sent them as a gesture of goodwill.
An ordinary Konoha Ninja would probably have been tempted by an invitation from Lord Danzo of the Konoha High Command, especially with such a friendly gesture accompanying it.
But Obito was someone who had transmigrated into this world.
Obito knew that old bastard Danzo's character all too well. He was far more ruthless than the Third Hokage.
The Third Hokage was, at worst, a hypocrite, but Danzo could only be described as sinister.
In the original story, Danzo had not only taken Shisui's eye, but had also been a major driving force behind the destruction of the Uchiha Clan.
With a master like Danzo, Obito would have to worry every waking moment about being schemed against.
He would have to wonder whether Danzo might steal his eyes.
Although Obito now possessed Dual Kamui and had no reason to fear Danzo,
being around someone like him would still leave him uneasy.
That was why Obito would never agree to join Root.
Before Obito could speak, Grandmother came out of the kitchen carrying two cups of hot tea and offered them to the two ninjas.
Smiling warmly, Grandmother asked, "Gentlemen, what sort of place is Root? Do they pay well there?"
The two ninjas accepted the hot tea and politely removed their masks, nodding their thanks to Grandmother.
The ninja with the bear mask smiled. "Grandmother, you certainly don't need to worry about the pay. With Obito's outstanding talent, he's sure to become Lord Danzo's right-hand man someday. His monthly salary will be more than generous."
"Oh, I see. That sounds quite good." Grandmother looked even happier.
She glanced back at Obito. Although she did not understand why her grandson, whose grades had always been poor, had suddenly drawn so much attention from the Konoha High Command, it was a good thing all the same.
"Grandmother, come back and eat."
Obito felt a little helpless. Raising him all these years had not been easy for Grandmother. Living in poverty had truly frightened her, which was why her first question had been about the monthly salary.
Fortunately, he would be graduating very soon. After that, even taking a few ordinary ninja missions would earn him a decent share of the mission fees.
Their lives would gradually improve.
With that thought, Obito told the two Root ninjas, "I appreciate the offer. Please thank Mr. Danzo for me, but I still need some time to think it over."
Having already accepted their gifts, rejecting them outright felt a little inappropriate, so Obito phrased his response tactfully.
"Of course. We'll relay your exact words to Lord Danzo. We'll be leaving, then."
The bear-masked ninja nodded, then rose with his companion and headed out.
"Obito, those two were quite polite, and they seemed to think highly of you. Why didn't you accept their offer?"
Grandmother watched them leave as she asked Obito.
Obito shook his head. "Grandmother, some things aren't as simple as they look. The people in Root aren't good people."
Grandmother had only been asking casually. She did not want to interfere too much with Obito's plans for his future.
After the two finished dinner, Obito volunteered to wash the pots and dishes.
Afterward, Obito told Grandmother he was going out to train and jogged out of the house.
Early the next morning, Obito ate breakfast and set off for school.
On a somewhat out-of-the-way road, another old lady had, predictably enough, spawned.
"Ah! Getting old really does make you useless. I can't even walk steadily anymore."
The old lady hunched her back and tried to cross the road on trembling legs, sighing all the while.
"Ma'am! Where are you going? I'll take you there!"
Putting his excellent moral character on display, Obito hoisted the old lady onto his shoulder without another word.
He carried her across the road, then charged off to the right.
The old lady was bounced around until her head spun. She hurriedly patted Obito's back. "Young man, slow down! You're going the wrong way. My home is in the other direction!"
Obito nodded, turned around with the old lady on his shoulder, and sprinted the other way.
"You should've said so! Why didn't you tell me sooner, ma'am? I'm Konoha's most helpful citizen. I'll get you to your destination safely!"
Obito delivered the old lady safely to her doorstep, but when he lowered her from his shoulder,
her eyes were spinning, and all that bouncing had knocked her unconscious.
Her legs could not support her, and she crumpled to the ground.
Inside the wooden house, a burly man saw the old lady collapse and rushed out, his eyes blazing with fury.
He grabbed a carrying pole as he shouted abuse at Obito:
"You little brat! What did you do to my mother?!"
Obito immediately turned and fled. "Sir! She's fine! I was just bringing her home!"
"You brat! Stop right there! You're not going anywhere unless you pay me 100,000 ryo today!"
With the man chasing and shouting behind him, Obito sprinted away and vanished around a street corner in a flash.
"Was that kid born a rabbit? He sure runs fast."
Panting heavily, the burly man had no choice but to turn back toward his house.
Obito jumped down from a nearby tree and patted his chest, still shaken.
"That was way too close. Looks like I'll have to be more careful about helping old ladies from now on, or someone might try to shake me down."
There was hardly any time left before class started.
Obito was a long way from school. If he ran there now, he would definitely be late.
But Obito was not worried, because when he had gone out to train the previous night,
he had conducted multiple experiments and gotten a rough grasp of Kamui's various abilities.
Among them, Kamui's long-distance movement had no restrictions whatsoever.
As long as he had left a Kamui mark somewhere, Obito could sense its location and quickly reach his destination.
And the previous night, Obito had deliberately left a Kamui mark outside the Ninja Academy.
"Kamui!"
Obito's black eyes turned red. As the three tomoe rotated in his eyes, they transformed into the shape of a Windmill Shuriken.
Space twisted into a swirling vortex in front of him.
Obito's body was sucked into the Alternate Dimension.
Sensing the direction of his Kamui mark, Obito activated Kamui again.
Outside the Ninja Academy, in the bushes beside the road,
a swirling spatial distortion appeared, and Obito stepped out of thin air.
"Ah~~, don't..."
The moment his feet touched the ground, Obito sensed that something was wrong.
A blush-inducing moan came from behind him, accompanied by a man's heavy panting.
"What's going on... You've got to be kidding." Obito was dumbfounded.
Were people really getting it on outdoors this early in the morning? Were they that adventurous?
Obito looked back.
A few meters away, at the foot of a wall,
a disheveled man and woman were doing something that could not be described.
... (Nobody likes reading this part, so it's omitted.)
"Isn't that Mr. Liangtian?" Obito's face was full of astonishment.
Although he could only see the back of the man's head and his figure from behind, Obito recognized him at once. It was definitely Liangtian.
Liangtian had been his homeroom teacher for four or five years. Obito knew him all too well.
