Ch. 41The first exam

Minato reported that Obito and the other children under his supervision had applied for the chunin exams, while Hiruzen accepted that Obito would remain under Minato's command despite refusing the Anbu. Five days later, the Konoha-only exams began, and Obito sat down for the written test hungry as Anko guarded her dango.

  • Minato gave Hiruzen the chunin exam applications and explained that Obito still resisted joining the Anbu after Danzo's assassination attempt.
  • Hiruzen recalled that Obito had defeated three elite jōnin and agreed to let him remain on Minato's team.
  • Five days later, Konoha began its chunin exams, which had three stages and admitted only Konoha ninja because the nations were at war.
  • Obito recognized classmates and other candidates in the written-test classroom while Kakashi, Rin, and Kurenai sat in the front rows.
  • Obito asked Anko for some of her dango, but she refused and he called her stingy.

Ch. 42Forest of Death

Obito quickly passed the Chunin Ninja Exams’ written test by using his Sharingan to copy a plant’s answers, then secretly helped Anko pass as well. At the Forest of Death, he reunited with his friends and drew teasing and jealousy over Kurenai’s affection for him while they waited for the scroll battle.

  • Obito used his Sharingan to copy a plant’s answers and finished the written test first, then slipped Anko a note containing the answers and a promise to buy her dango next time.
  • Obito’s quick submission astonished the proctors, who discussed rumors of his strength, while Kakashi, Rin, Kurenai, Asuma, Might Guy, and the other familiar candidates also passed.
  • The surviving candidates gathered outside the Forest of Death to wait for the next round, the battle for scrolls.
  • Rin asked Obito how he had finished so quickly, and Obito bragged that he had figured out the test’s rules.
  • Kurenai defended Obito from Kakashi’s teasing and stood close to him, while Asuma mourned her affection and Might Guy wondered why Obito had become popular.

Ch. 43Running into Baoguo again

Obito, Kakashi, and Rin entered the Forest of Death for the second Chunin exam, while Rin remained hurt by Obito’s closeness with Kurenai. Their team encountered Hokoku Shimura, Mizuki, and Midori Nara, and Hokoku feared Obito might attack him.

  • Might Guy tried to comfort Kakashi by declaring himself Kakashi’s best friend, but Kakashi rejected him.
  • Obito chatted with Kurenai while Rin quietly stepped away, feeling hurt and lonely.

  • Hokoku watched Obito warily and reminded him that the exam rules prohibited killing.

Ch. 44Toying with Baoguo

Obito frightened Baoguo and Mizuki before chasing them through the Forest of Death to settle his grudge with Baoguo. As other competing ninja noticed the commotion and followed, Obito continued closing in on the fleeing Baoguo.

  • Obito threatened Baoguo and Mizuki, then charged at them while Midori Nara tried to restrain him with Shadow Imitation.
  • Mizuki and Baoguo abandoned Midori and fled, and Midori let Obito pass after blocking his shuriken.
  • Baoguo threw Mizuki at Obito to slow him down, but Obito kicked Mizuki aside and continued after Baoguo.
  • Obito terrorized Baoguo as he chased him through the woods, drawing the attention of nearby competing ninja.

Ch. 45Stop Hitting Me

Obito interrogated Baoguo with the Sharingan and learned that Danzo had sent him to take responsibility for Root without telling him the details. After taking Baoguo’s scroll and beating him, Obito was stopped by Rin as Kakashi and the others caught up.

  • Kakashi and Rin hurried after Obito, and Midori Nara followed them while supporting Mizuki.
  • Obito used the Sharingan to question Baoguo, who revealed that Danzo had told him to take responsibility for Root but had not explained why.
  • Obito concluded that Baoguo had not known about the attempt on his life, took Baoguo’s Earth Scroll, and beat him.
  • The watching exam participants quietly retreated, while Kakashi and Rin arrived and Mizuki refused to approach Obito.
  • Rin pulled Obito away from Baoguo, and Obito teased her about no longer being angry with him.

Ch. 46Three spies

Obito left Kakashi and Rin to gather firewood and game, but discovered three Konoha classmates fighting three spies from Kumogakure who wanted Yoko Hyuga’s Byakugan. As Yoko tried to escape, one of the spies caught her with a Lightning Release technique.

  • Obito, Kakashi, and Rin made camp beside a stream as evening fell in the Forest of Death.
  • Obito went to gather firewood and hunt, then heard fighting and followed the noise.

  • Obito used Shadow Clones and his Sharingan to stop the attackers, killing one spy while the other two escaped.
  • Yoko Hyuga, Aoba Yamashiro, and Namiashi Raidō thanked Obito, and Raidō identified the men as spies trying to steal Yoko’s Byakugan.
  • The surviving spies released purple smoke and fled into the woods, triggering Obito’s mission to capture them and take them to the Central Tower.
  • Obito asked Yoko to treat the injured teammates and chased after the two spies, catching up to within ten meters of them.

Ch. 48Fighting Two Opponents

Obito pursued two ninja and used clones and Ninjutsu to outmaneuver their attacks. He struck the bearded ninja in the back with a Rasengan, leaving the fight unresolved.

  • Obito emerged from behind a tree and attacked the two ninja with Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique.
  • The bearded man struck Obito with Lightning Release: Thunderclap Strike, but that Obito also vanished in white smoke.
  • Obito appeared behind the bearded man and hit him with a Rasengan, making him scream and spit blood.

Ch. 49This Is Youth

Obito defeated the two spies and captured them alive after forcing the bald man to surrender and bind his unconscious companion. He returned to Yoko Hyuga’s group, where Might Guy, Shizune, and Yata Shimura were stunned by his victory.
