Background / History

Orochimaru became renowned as one of the Sannin, a title bestowed by Hanzō of the Salamander. By his first appearance, he was a Konoha rogue shinobi working within Akatsuki while pursuing his own research interests 4 47.

Witnessing Nagato’s Rinnegan sparked his interest in the Uzumaki Clan. He arranged with Shimura Danzō to obtain Uzumaki research subjects and also took notice of Shixia’s black-market activities. His attempt to obtain the Rinnegan had already left him scarred, leading him to pursue Itachi Uchiha’s Sharingan as a more attainable alternative 4 12.

His research also included extensive experimentation with Hashirama’s cells. This experience allowed him to recognize an aura resembling the First Hokage’s when Shixia acquired world affinity 12.

Appearance

Orochimaru has an effeminate appearance, unusually pale skin, shoulder-length black hair, and cold, snake-like eyes 4 10.

Personality

Orochimaru is methodical and strongly goal-oriented. He tests Shixia’s abilities before agreeing to employ him and carefully weighs the costs and risks of acquiring an Uchiha vessel. His curiosity extends beyond unusual bodies and ninjutsu to Shixia’s apparently exceptional intelligence network 10 11 22 46.

His research ambitions override concern for others. He attempts to purchase Karin, offers payment for abducted children with kekkei genkai, and secretly plans to take Shixia’s body. Nevertheless, he restrains himself when the prospective victim is too dangerous: Shixia’s strength repeatedly persuades him to negotiate rather than attack 10 13.

His caution coexists with pride. Believing Itachi’s known achievements insufficient to threaten a veteran Sannin, he tries to capture him under the pretext of sparring. His immediate defeat strengthens his desire for an Uchiha body rather than discouraging it 47 48.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Caravan Pursuit and Akatsuki Recruitment

Kakuzu brings Orochimaru as reinforcement after his defeat by Shixia, but they arrive to find the caravan destroyed and Karin gone. They later confront Shixia at Amegakure’s black market. The confrontation instead leads to Kakuzu recruiting Shixia into Akatsuki, with Orochimaru offering no objection 4 6 7.

Research Agreement

Orochimaru’s attempt to acquire Karin develops into a research partnership after Shixia offers himself as a subject. A combat test demonstrates Shixia’s lightning transformation, offensive power, and ability to track Orochimaru through his substitutions 10 11.

Shixia’s stated conditions include the right to refuse research projects and a prohibition against cloning his cells. Orochimaru accepts the arrangement while privately intending to understand Shixia well enough to seize his body 11 12 13.

Shixia’s later demonstration of Wood Release and rapid subjugation of Kusagakure deepen Orochimaru’s interest in both his body and his sources of information 16 22.

Renewed Examinations and the Uchiha Search

Orochimaru returns to complain that Shixia has supplied only two drops of blood and two strands of hair. A renewed examination reveals enormous increases in both chakra reserves and chakra quality 44 45.

He then requests a living Uchiha with awakened Sharingan. Shixia refuses to capture Itachi, while Orochimaru considers Sasuke too young and insufficiently developed. Obito becomes the remaining option, but recovering his original missing eye from a powerful Konoha jōnin raises the quoted price to at least one hundred million ryō 45 46.

Failed Attempt to Capture Itachi

Hoping to avoid the fee, Orochimaru challenges Itachi to a supposed spar. His actual plan is to incapacitate Itachi, carry him to a secret base, and perform Living Corpse Reincarnation 47.

Itachi places him under Demonic Illusion: Shackling Stakes Technique before he can attack. Orochimaru collapses after the illusion is released and recognizes that he badly underestimated Itachi 47 48.

Commission to Capture Obito

After that defeat, Orochimaru accepts Shixia’s price. The S-rank commission requires a living Obito with both original Sharingan intact, to be delivered within three months 49.

Orochimaru does not yet possess the hundred million ryō. He contacts Danzō to obtain research funding, intending to make his associate indirectly cover the capture fee. The commission remains pending at the end of the supplied material 49.
