Background / History

Kakuzu was a Takigakure shinobi ordered to assassinate the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju. He survived the encounter but failed the mission, earning severe punishment from his village. He subsequently stole Takigakure’s secret technique, Earth Grudge Fear, and defected 42.

The exact circumstances of his encounter with Hashirama remain uncertain. Shixia considers a brief fight with either Hashirama or a Wood Clone more plausible than the circulating story that Kakuzu merely threw two shuriken from an enormous distance and fled. Kakuzu later concluded that Takigakure’s leaders had deliberately assigned him an impossible mission to dispose of him. This betrayal changed his temperament and left him trusting money rather than people 42.

Kakuzu became an early Akatsuki member and a prominent black-market mercenary. Before Shixia’s rise, he held the top position in Amegakure’s black market through his strength, high mission-success rate, and reputation for having attempted to assassinate the First Hokage. His Akatsuki teams also acquired the nickname “Death Duo” because numerous previous partners had died while working with him 13 15 16.

Appearance

Kakuzu has green eyes and a grayish-green face, and wears a mask that conceals his expression 7 9.

Personality

Kakuzu is cold, ruthless, and intensely motivated by money. He slaughters caravan guards without hesitation and takes satisfaction in the prospect of profiting from the aftermath of someone else’s battle. His attachment to money stems in part from Takigakure’s betrayal, after which he ceased trusting anything else 1 4 42.

Despite his reputation for overwork, Kakuzu values survival more than earnings. He abandons a confrontation with Shixia when the target’s bounty does not justify the danger, refuses politically provocative assassination jobs, and repeatedly demands rest when their workload becomes unbearable 7 9 19.

He can acknowledge an opponent’s ability even while resenting a defeat. After Shixia destroys two of his hearts, Kakuzu eventually recommends him for Akatsuki membership and candidly reports the loss to Nagato. His practical respect for Shixia coexists with suspicion that the younger mercenary’s offers conceal more exhausting work 8 43 44.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Caravan Attack and Akatsuki Recruitment

• Ambushes Shuinaihao’s caravan, prompting Shixia to accept a 200,000-ryo rescue commission. Shixia overwhelms him and destroys his fire and wind masks 1 2.
• Accepts Shixia’s offer to end the fight, but returns with Orochimaru as reinforcement. They find the caravan already massacred and fail to recover their employer’s intended target, Karin 2 4 6.
• Confronts Shixia and Karin at Amegakure’s black market. Rather than fight a dangerous opponent for a modest bounty, Kakuzu invites Shixia to join Akatsuki 6 7.
• Recommends Shixia to Nagato and becomes his observer during the newcomer’s probationary period 8.

The Overworked Mission Partnership

• Provides Shixia and Karin with accommodation and Akatsuki robes, then begins taking missions with them 9.
• Their assistant-hiring arrangement allows Shixia to participate in bounty work while still accepting paid commissions from Kakuzu 9.
• The pair completes fifty missions in one day and later reaches a reported daily total of 171 with Shixia’s clones. Their work increases Akatsuki’s income tenfold while depriving Amegakure’s lower- and mid-ranking ninja of available jobs 13 16.

• Suspects that becoming village leader would merely turn him into Shixia’s administrator and workhorse. He also warns that an attack could attract scrutiny from other villages 44.
• Pain rejects the operation because Takigakure’s ties to the Land of Fire could provoke Konoha and the daimyo before Akatsuki is ready 44.
