The feeling was strange, and strangely coincidental. Whenever he tried to extricate himself from events, that unseen hand would appear out of nowhere and drag him back in.
Following Annie, he soon reached the street opposite the Sheriff's Office.
A large group of investigators and Sheriffs were hurrying out eagerly. Just as Joey was about to ask how they were supposed to slip inside,
Annie produced a set of clothes from somewhere and handed it to him.
"Put this on."
Joey stared blankly at the men's uniform in his hands. She even prepared this?
Perhaps because of the emergency, the two slipped into the Sheriff's Office with little difficulty.
They made their way cautiously toward the ammunition depot.
What neither of them knew was that the staff who had been hastily assembling to leave the Sheriff's Office had all fallen silent upon one person's arrival.
Meanwhile, Benny Hoyland stood in a corner of the church square, quietly watching the residents gradually gather around him.
He turned his head and glanced at his subordinate. "Why haven't the reinforcements arrived yet?"
"With things as they are, something could go wrong at any moment. We need more people to maintain order."
"I don't know either, Director. I'll go hurry them along right now."
The town had few residents to begin with. By Benny's estimate, more than half of them had gathered around the church.
As he pondered this, a huge screen of light abruptly appeared in midair above the center of the square.
The moment it appeared, the noisy crowd fell silent.
Everyone looked up, watching the person on the screen with curiosity and anticipation.
To them, that person was a generous benefactor who handed out money.
With a sinister cackle, the man on the screen began flailing his arms and dancing.
