Background / History
Survival in Senegal
Before his new life in Senegal, Joey endured more than a decade of exhausting work schedules on Blue Star. He initially wanted a quiet life rather than power or conquest. He later discovers that Senegal is not another world: it is his original planet after the destruction of its former civilization 12 31 50.
In the lawless Outer City, Joey lives with Tony Crevi, whom he calls Dad. He grows crops in a concealed basement garden, hunts, and trains his body in the wilderness. When bandits invade their shack, he surrenders his seeds to protect Tony and bargains for the death of Tony’s torturer. The raiders nevertheless destroy their Foundation Stone, forcing Joey to consider selling his unusually pure blood for a replacement 1 4.
Udil Beckett rejects his trade, but Joey later penetrates the farmer’s illusion-covered courtyard using his blood. His wilderness preparations also allow him to trap a low-level Beyonder who has lost control. Around this period, he rescues Alisa near a crashed aircraft and salvages seeds and a larger Foundation Stone from the wreckage 2 4 5 7.
Becoming a Beyonder
Joey joins a cave expedition while searching for Fortune Teller ingredients. He realizes that the group has recruited him as expendable scouting labor, then discovers that Keen intends to sacrifice the party. With an enormous Agate Worm approaching, Joey consumes the two main Potion ingredients directly and recites an altered honorific name 8 9 10.
He survives as a Sequence 9 Fortune Teller and gains access to the ruined Heavenly Court above the Gray Fog. The Southern Heavenly Gate enters his body, and he learns that his offerings have been directed to himself. His Round Table Hall takes shape according to his thoughts, with twelve animal-marked chairs and a golden dragon throne 12 13.
Wayne subsequently attacks his home, shoots him, and apparently kills Tony. A silver coin of luck prevents the bullet from striking Joey’s heart. Tony’s remaining magical paper figure asks him to abandon revenge and tells him that Alisa has survived. Joey agrees outwardly, but continues seeking strength and joins the Survey Corps 17 18.
After finding Alisa with Udil, Joey negotiates cooperation over their experimental “Hope” seeds. He avoids relying exclusively on either Udil or the Survey Corps. His new salary allows him to rent a house in West District 9 19 20.
Sealed Artifacts and the Senegal Crisis
Joey earns admission to the Survey Corps’ inner ranks after reporting a Necromancer Sect advancement ritual. He chooses the cursed dagger Weeping Blade from storage and attracts the unexplained attention of Sealed Artifact 0-09, the Gate of the Abyss 25.
At Earl Aaron’s estate, he encounters Sealed Artifact 0-013, whose directing ability changes enemies into allies and prevents him from leaving. Although Joey initially resists its mental assimilation, he remains vulnerable to its interference and imposed rules. He brings the artifact into the Round Table Hall, where it addresses him as its master, but its contract prevents it from remaining with him permanently 27 28 30 31.
When Wade’s transformation destroys the estate, Joey escapes the black hole’s pull by withdrawing his consciousness into the Round Table Hall. After interrogation by Military Intelligence and a Demigod, he recovers an erased memory there and retrieves a surviving page of 0-013 from the ruins 34.
His landlady Naomi later imprisons him during her ritual experiments. Nur Maimaiti Plato rescues him, reads his thoughts, and attempts to draw his physical body toward the Ashen Space. She stops after sensing a dangerous presence and eventually leaves him with antenna worms and a Potion formula. Joey distrusts these gifts and instead advances to Sequence 8 with Golas’s assistance 37 39 41 42 44 45.
Wayne then reveals that Tony was his shadow identity and that Joey’s ordinary life had been manipulated to drive him toward the Fortune Teller pathway. Tony’s journal gives Joey a more complicated account: Wayne is Leila Aaron’s adopted son, and Tony had prepared a Bronze Gate escape route for him 50 52.
Joey reunites with Alisa and attempts to escape with her, but she is taken for execution. He later identifies Michelit as her killer and conceals his desire for revenge. Opening the Gate of the Abyss sweeps Joey into the World Inside the Door, where prolonged wandering strips away his memories and leaves him moving like a beast. Katrin helps him stand when he finally returns 53 54 55 56 57.
During Yvon’s advancement crisis, Joey invokes the Light Thief of the Universe’s Dark Side to interrupt Yvon and Maimaiti. Wayne sacrifices himself to strengthen the summoning, and Joey tearfully calls him Dad 60.
Lia Harbor and the Dreamscape
After leaving the godforsaken land, Joey takes possession of Joey Clive’s body. The original owner’s occult group had intended to share that body, but competing spiritual bodies drove it into madness. Joey’s stronger Beyonder spirituality wins control and forces the others back into the Dreamscape 100.
In Lia Harbor, a summons associated with Rugger Giles draws Joey into disturbing Red Moon dreams. He discovers that Barbara, Jennifer, and Adela are being subjected to repeated dream experiments. Initially he avoids the dreams by placing his spirit above the Gray Fog, but the strain on his body leads him to explore them instead 66 70 71.
Working with Nome, Joey investigates the bookstore clerk Duke Kolmi and the Black Church, whose grounds overlap with a space ten years in the past. The investigation exposes implanted memories, corrupted clergy, and a demon-child crisis. Nome ultimately prioritizes Lia Harbor’s residents over Joey; afterward, Joey buries his remains, while Maimaiti captures Dagon and leaves Joey a doll that can open a route back to reality 78 82 85 90 91.
Annie Bullock then assembles nine Dreamscape participants for a sea voyage. Joey conceals that he enters the Dreamscape every night and has never died there. During the expedition, he calculates that time passes ten times faster in the Dreamscape, investigates deaths connected to a painting, and recognizes that Red Spider Silk binds the nine participants together 94 98 101.
Back in Lia Harbor, Joey uses his association with Nome to obtain investigative work from Benny Hoyland. He uncovers the Feldmanra Formula near Gull Friedman’s corpse, confronts Benny over the missing women, and trades information about the reincarnating eight and the true Sea God 115 120 125.
His developed Fortune Shifter abilities finally receive a decisive combat test against Yuri Mo. Joey transfers lightning damage to surrounding soldiers, combines poison with transferred weapon side effects, and kills Yuri Mo, a Soldier equivalent to Sequence 6. He then detects danger at the ammunition depot and rushes after Annie 129 130.
Appearance
Joey has black hair and black eyes, features that attract contempt in Senegal despite the exceptional purity of his blood 1 2 20.
- Youthful, attractive face: The bandit leader comments on his appearance during the home invasion 1.
- Black hair: Initially tangled and unkempt; a Necromancer Sect attacker later cuts away a large patch from his crown 2 27.
- Trained physique: More than half a year of wilderness exercise gives him the strength and agility to evade a lost-control creature and lead it into traps 4.
- Changed body: His Lia Harbor identity uses the body of Joey Clive rather than his earlier body from Senegal 100.
Personality
Joey’s central ambition is modest: protect his family and live peacefully. He rejects conquest and domination, and his desire for power grows chiefly from repeated experiences of helplessness. He remains willing to endure humiliation when survival or an immediate objective matters more than dignity 50 68 90 122 128.
He is cautious, suspicious, and increasingly secretive. He hides his abilities, tests potential allies, prepares explanations before approaching authorities, and prefers retreat when an enemy’s powers are unknown. In combat, he favors traps, poison, misdirection, and a guaranteed finishing strike over a direct contest of strength 4 85 109 115 128 130.
His pragmatism coexists with genuine attachment. He refuses to draw blood from the injured Tony, builds him a wheelchair, and avoids killing Udil’s exploited blood slaves. He values Alisa’s innocence without regarding his feelings as romantic. Nevertheless, self-preservation can outweigh his conscience, and he is capable of using others or withholding help when the danger is too great 1 16 19 54 113 115.
His internal commentary is irreverent and often self-deprecating. Faced with stronger beings, he readily adopts an ingratiating manner while privately complaining about their demands 52 67 91.
Abilities & Skills
Fortune Teller: Luck and Intuition
Sequence 9 gives Joey limited control over his own luck and heightened spiritual sensitivity 19 24 130.
- Uses silver-coin tosses to assess favorable or dangerous outcomes; heads indicates good fortune and tails warns of danger 24 27 82.
- Can increase and store his Luck Value 130.
- Detects impending attacks and avoids strikes aimed at vital areas 19.
- Perception is not infallible: 0-013 disrupts his reactions, and Annie’s nonhostile testing kick fails to trigger a warning 27 105.
Fortune Shifting and Grafting
As a Sequence 8 Fortune Shifter, Joey can move fortune between himself and others, then develops applications beyond luck alone 45 130.
- Drains another person’s good fortune, makes them unlucky, and stores the acquired luck for later use 45.
- Shifts away his aura and signs of existence so others overlook him; this suppresses attention rather than making him physically disappear 45.
- Develops damage transfer with Azrael’s assistance and successfully tests it against Yuri Mo’s lightning attacks 93 130.
- Uses Red Spider Silk to route injuries and weapon side effects to people connected to its threads 130.
- Limit: His body must withstand the incoming energy long enough to transfer it. An excessive attack can destroy him before redirection occurs 130.
Gray Fog and the Round Table Hall
Joey can send his consciousness into the Heavenly Court’s ruins by steadying his breathing and concentrating 12.
- Shapes the Round Table Hall according to his thoughts and summons participants to gatherings there 12 20 30.
- Uses the Gray Fog to isolate divine power and maddening whispers 30.
- Recovers a memory erased during a Demigod’s interrogation 34.
- Escapes Wade’s black hole attraction by removing his spiritual consciousness from his body 34.
- Can use an offering to himself and the hall as a potential physical escape route, but performing the ritual during combat risks interruption and exposure 90.
- Limit: Prolonged separation of spirit and body places a heavy burden on his physical body 70.
Spirit Vision and Dream Control
Joey uses Spirit Vision to examine supernatural activity and eventually gains voluntary control over Dreamscape entry 47 77.
- Detects whether living beings remain nearby and recognizes supernatural alterations within weaponized soldiers 47 129.
- Learns to avoid the Red Moon’s attention by behaving like an ordinary Dreamscape inhabitant 70.
- Gains spirituality through dream exploration and can later refuse forced entry 70 77.
- Returns from the Dreamscape through the Round Table Hall 101.
- Limits: Spirit Vision does not expose every deception; it finds nothing obviously false about Tony’s shadow-derived existence 50.
Unusual Blood and Perception
Joey’s exceptionally pure blood has properties beyond its value as a commodity 1 2.
- Smearing his blood around his eyes allows him to break through Udil’s dust-veil illusions 2.
- His blood elicits an unusual reaction during an offering to a deity 2.
- Can perceive the Color Out of Space’s form and colors when others interpret its influence merely as altered weather 54.
- Risk: His blood quality makes him a potential target for captivity and exploitation as a living blood bank 1.
Practical Combat and Investigation
Joey compensates for his pathway’s initially limited offensive power through preparation and deduction 4 49.
- Builds spike pits and poisoned, iron-barbed nets 4.
- Trains specifically in escape techniques and continues physical conditioning before going to sea 49 93.
- Uses deception and bargaining to survive encounters with stronger Beyonders 17 19 115.
- Identifies staged evidence, concealed mechanisms, and inconsistencies in supernatural cases 78 84 98 108.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Weeping Blade / Quenching: A cursed dagger selected from Survey Corps storage. Releases a psychic toxin that numbs an enemy’s body and strengthens with its owner; its side effect is diarrhea 25.
- Quenching–Red Spider Silk combination: Red Spider Silk attaches itself to his emerald-green, scale-patterned blade. Joey can launch and retrieve it through the thread. The combination strengthens both its poison and its digestive side effects 118.
- Red Spider Silk: Initially binds the nine Dreamscape participants. Later serves as the connection through which Joey transfers damage and weapon side effects 101 130.
- Silver coin of luck: Deflects Wayne’s shot away from his heart; Joey also uses silver coins for fortune assessment 18 24.
- Fragment of Sealed Artifact 0-013: A yellowed page recovered from Earl Aaron’s ruined estate. Answers questions, supplies deductions and maps, and assists with ability development 34 39 56 130.
- Maimaiti’s doll: Opens a door to Levitt Street and later serves as a medium for an active doll-form Maimaiti to speak with him 91 122.
- Sealed Artifact 2-049 — authorized access: A telegraph machine assigned by Benny for daily checks. Predicts crises but can exaggerate their scale; Benny hopes Joey’s apparent Gambler abilities can mitigate this drawback 123.
Relationships
- Tony Crevi / Wayne — Joey’s father figure and later-revealed manipulator. Tony is Wayne’s shadow identity, but Joey’s attachment survives the revelation; he calls Wayne Dad as Wayne sacrifices himself 50 52 60.
- Alisa — Rescued companion and farming partner, later identified as the Empire’s First Princess. Joey treasures her unspoiled nature, explicitly without romantic feelings, and remains deeply affected by her death 7 12 54 56.

- Michelit — Katrin’s great-grandfather and Alisa’s killer. Joey secures an oath against further attack while concealing his wish for revenge 57.
- Nome — Punishment Priest and investigative partner. Entrusts Joey with a request to kill Cain Ivanovich; Joey later buries his remains 90 91.
- Freya Polly — Teacher associated with the Holy Cathedral Church whose sculptures and influence draw Joey’s suspicion. Her reaction to Nome’s reported death suggests knowledge Joey lacks 70 85 91.
- Barbara and Wilson — Members of his Lia Harbor household. Joey investigates Barbara’s disappearance and tells Benny that protecting his family is his chief concern 66 70 71 122.
- Annie Bullock — Dreamscape expedition organizer and calculating collaborator. Joey challenges her secrecy and manipulation, but works alongside her against the ammunition-depot threat 94 116 118 130.
