Background
The Northern Border Alliance formed when weak races banded together. It became one of the universe’s nine superpowers after inviting a supreme powerhouse to oversee it. This backing distinguishes it from alliances such as the Nine Domains Alliance and Thorn Ring Alliance, which possess large numbers of experts but lack a Universe Strongest presiding over them 5 22.
Its solidarity is imperfect. One member resents the pinnacle races for occupying the finest territories and criticizes the alliance’s Universe Masters for fighting over power rather than strengthening the organization. The Lord of Desolation’s membership shows that the alliance also attracts established powerful races: as his race’s sole Universe Master, he brought it into the alliance 11 28.
Despite past grudges, the alliance has no fundamental territorial conflict with humanity. This allows its leadership to pursue cooperation when access to humanity’s Supreme Treasure forging becomes more valuable than maintaining old hostilities 155.
Its cohesion ultimately depends on its members’ need for collective protection. During the trillion-era period, races that produce True Gods prefer independent development to internal alliance disputes. The Northern Border Alliance consequently splits apart, as does the Shi Hua Alliance 240.
Organization and Military Strength
Reported Numbers
The chapters give differing figures for the alliance’s Venerable population; these are not presented as documented recruitment milestones.
| Measure | Reported Scale | Chapter |
|---|---|---|
| Universe Venerables relative to the Hong Alliance | Approximately one hundred times as many | 10 |
| Universe Venerables | More than 300,000 | 11 |
| Universe Venerables | More than one million | 22 |
| Universe Masters | More than one hundred | 11 12 30 |
| Fifth-tier Universe Masters | Only three or four among roughly one hundred Universe Masters at the time of the comparison | 72 |
| Fourth-tier Universe Masters | No more than a dozen | 72 |
| Remaining Universe Masters | A smaller portion at the third tier; most at the second tier | 72 77 |
Strengths and Limitations
- Numerical advantage: Its members are the most numerous experts encountered on the Primal Stars, allowing several teams to operate on the same star and giving the alliance an advantage in collecting scattered treasure keys 21 22.
- Group combat: Venerables commonly band together for protection and favor overwhelming isolated opponents. Three teams totaling ten Venerables gather for one treasure contest, though most are only Intermediate Universe Venerables 5 11 12.
- Resurrection support: The alliance’s Universe Masters can resurrect fallen Venerables. Soul enslavement remains a greater danger, prompting a weakened member to self-destruct rather than risk capture by a Zerg soul specialist 12.
- Uneven resources: Its Venerables are generally poorer than human powerhouses. Two participating Universe Overlords possess few supreme treasures and cannot secure a decisive advantage against a single well-equipped demon opponent 10 28 29.
- Incomplete intelligence coverage: Humanity’s information database does not record every alliance Venerable, making unfamiliar teams harder for Yang Hao to assess 10.
- Limited elite depth: Despite its large Universe Master population, its number of genuinely powerful experts is comparable to that of other pinnacle races. Most of its Universe Masters rely on collective protection rather than exceptional individual strength 72 77.
- Slow emergency reinforcement: During the Lord of Desolation’s final battle, the nearest available teleportation point is five hundred million light-years away. Even the Lord of Star River cannot reach him before he is killed 76 78.
- Restricted Universe Ocean exploration: Because the alliance leader rarely provides direct support, the vast majority of its Universe Masters avoid the Three Great Forbidden Lands and seek treasures in less dangerous regions instead 134.
- No collective claim to the leader’s supreme treasure: The Qiqu Starlight Lake, a Domain-type Supreme Supreme Treasure, belongs personally to the Northern Border Alliance Leader rather than to the alliance 185.
Leadership and Governance
The Northern Border Alliance Leader spends much of his time elsewhere and rarely manages alliance affairs. His usual assistance consists of occasionally resurrecting Universe Overlords, and even those resurrections require payment. His nominal backing therefore does not give alliance members the same practical support that a more involved Universe Strongest might provide 76 118 122.
Three leading figures handle the alliance’s affairs. The Lord of Star River is explicitly identified as one of them and takes responsibility for negotiating cooperation with humanity’s Universe Artifact Refining Group. The Lord of Black Lotus coordinates the attempt to save the Lord of Desolation, rejecting weaker members’ unrealistic demands that humanity apologize and pay compensation 77 78 155.
The leader’s detachment also limits the alliance’s strategic reliability. When Zhen Jiao proposes a coalition against humanity, he privately regards the alliance as weaker than the other peak races and considers abandoning it if serious trouble arises 187.
Known Members
- Northern Border Alliance Leader — The alliance’s nominal Universe Strongest overseer. He rarely handles its affairs, occasionally resurrects Universe Overlords for payment, and personally possesses the Domain-type Supreme Supreme Treasure Qiqu Starlight Lake. After Mechanical Father God’s death, he makes a rare appearance to warn alliance members not to provoke humanity 76 118 185.
- Lord of Black Lotus — Representative of the alliance’s six great plant-life races. His enormous divine body and exceptional strength place him among its top three Universe Masters; he intervenes to protect the Lord of Desolation from Ice Peak. He later directs negotiations intended to delay Desolation’s attackers until reinforcements arrive 30 77.
- Lord of Star River — A Universe Master placed in the same broad strength tier as Lord Peng Gong and the Chaos City Lord. He is a fifth-order expert and one of the alliance’s three leading figures. He attempts to rescue the Lord of Desolation and later leads efforts to establish cooperation with humanity’s Artifact Refining Group 40 76 78 92 155.
- Lord of Desolation — His race’s sole Universe Master, with relatively ordinary strength at that rank. He guards a treasure hall and plans to seize its prize from whoever survives inside. Later, after attempting to capture special lifeforms protected by Lord Liang Zhu, he is killed by Liang Zhu and Yang Hao despite the alliance’s attempted intervention 28 29 75 76 77 78.
- Star Lord Liulan — One of the alliance Universe Masters whom the Lord of Desolation calls for help during his final battle 76.
- Lord Sheduo — The sole Universe Master of a powerful race that joins the alliance under his leadership. An ancient being possesses his body in the Water-Ice Domain; his other body, located in the alliance’s territory, subsequently refuses a request to resurrect a fallen Venerable 174.
- Lord Shihuang — A fifth-order former Machine Race Universe Master. After Mechanical Father God’s death, he establishes a new race outside the former Machine Race territory and joins the alliance, which welcomes the rare addition of a powerful expert 186.
- An unnamed avatar of Yang Hao — Yang Hao’s later review of his forces states that one of his avatars has joined the Northern Border Alliance; the passage does not identify that avatar by name 214.
- Venerable Linhong — Member of a five-Venerable team that attacks Yang Hao for a key. Yang Hao kills him with three strikes from Natural Disaster 21.
- Two unnamed Universe Overlords — Enter the final chamber of the soul-treasure trial together. Both die in a mutual self-destruction with Demon Venerable Wild Nightmare 24 28 29.
- An unnamed Yaoguang Hall contestant — A Universe Master who attacks Lord Changjiu during the hall’s passage trial to force their joint elimination 131.
- An unnamed Supreme Treasure client — A Universe Master caught commissioning a Supreme Treasure for a Demon Race friend, prompting a warning that such proxy commissions could cost the entire alliance its access to the Artifact Refining Group 155.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Primal Star Contests
- Warhammer contest: Two alliance Venerables arrive before an ordinary supreme treasure warhammer fully emerges. They withdraw after a human domain treasure restrains them, judging their chances poor against the human team and Flame Demon Venerable without nearby alliance reinforcements 5.
- Profiting from human–demon conflict: Five alliance Venerables face Yang Hao and two demon Venerables. While the humans and demons turn on each other, the alliance claims the offensive supreme treasure, worth approximately one Supreme Treasure Point, and watches the battle from the sidelines 10 11.
- Volcanic-island defeat: Three alliance teams totaling ten Venerables converge on a stronger treasure emergence. Venerable Qing Mi’s illusion makes one member attack a companion; Yang Hao, the Golden Horned Beast, the Zerg Mother Emperor, and the demon team then jointly attack the alliance, inflicting deaths and forcing the survivors to flee 11 12.
Zhenren Stone Formation Keys
Five High Universe Venerables attempt to force Yang Hao to surrender a newly emerged key. He kills Venerable Linhong, pursues another member until that opponent self-destructs, and collects the remaining treasures. The other three escape through a Primal Star passage 21.
| Step | Alliance Position | Chapter |
|---|---|---|
| Initial holdings | Holds four of the seven keys: two originally possessed, one seized, and one purchased | 22 |
| Negotiations with the Machine Race | Seeks to buy the Machine Race’s single key; humanity retains the remaining two | 22 |
| Machine Race purchase | Eventually buys the fifth key at a steep price after prolonged resistance from the seller | 33 |
| Human key purchase | Pays two high-tier Domain-type Supreme Treasures for humanity’s two keys, completing the set | 33 |
The seven keys open the Zhenren Stone Formation on Primal Star No. 01754. The Chaos City Lord handles humanity’s negotiations, and Yang Hao receives the Ten Thousand Skies Sea as his share of the payment 21 22 33.
Soul-Treasure Hall
- Two-on-one battle: Two alliance Universe Overlords reach the final chamber containing a high-grade Soul-type Supreme Treasure. Forced into a survival battle, they attack Demon Venerable Wild Nightmare together but gradually fall behind despite their numerical advantage 28 29.
- Mutual destruction: Both alliance Overlords and Wild Nightmare self-destruct. Yang Hao and Venerable Liangzhu survive by sheltering inside Luohua Hall 29.
- Failed outside ambush: After learning that the alliance’s Overlords have died, the Lord of Desolation prepares to kill whoever emerges. The Lord of Ice Peak suppresses him with the Cold Mist Realm 29 30.
- Black Lotus’s intervention: The Lord of Black Lotus counters Ice Peak’s domain but declines a major battle over the treasure. He leaves with Desolation, and Liangzhu ultimately claims the Hundred-Thousand Soul Crystal 30.
Closing Primal Star Victory
Near the end of the Primal Star opening, the Northern Border Alliance wins the contest for the finest Peak Supreme Treasure available there. Giant Axe cites that outcome when advising humanity’s Universe Masters to stop competing for further treasures and avoid possible Machine Race traps 43.
Death of the Lord of Desolation
The Lord of Desolation discovers special lifeforms in a Cosmic Secret Realm and intends to capture them for alliance resources. They resemble Lord Liang Zhu and are under his protection, bringing Desolation into conflict with Liang Zhu and Yang Hao 75 77.
- Request for rescue: Overwhelmed by their combined attacks, Desolation calls the alliance’s third-, fourth-, and fifth-tier Universe Masters for help. The Lord of Star River sets out, but the distant teleportation point leaves Desolation needing to survive for roughly half a day 76.
- Divided response: Some weaker Universe Masters demand that humanity apologize and compensate the alliance. Black Lotus dismisses this as unrealistic and instead instructs Desolation to offer Supreme Treasures for his release, hoping negotiations will delay the attackers 77.
- Failed negotiations: Liang Zhu refuses to release Desolation. His Soul Domain Tremor briefly disrupts Desolation’s soul, allowing Yang Hao to seize his saber and armor. Desolation equips replacements, but Yang Hao breaks his ordinary armor and continues attacking 77.
- Death before reinforcements: Desolation is killed before Star River can arrive. Losing one relatively weak Universe Master scarcely changes the alliance’s overall strength, but severely damages morale, especially among weaker members who fear suffering the same fate 78.
- Threat against Liang Zhu: The alliance announces that it will kill Liang Zhu if its experts encounter him in the Universe Ocean. Rather than remain without factional protection, Liang Zhu joins the Hongmeng Alliance with Yang Hao’s assistance and the Chaos City Lord’s approval 78.
Yaoguang Hall Competition
An alliance Universe Master participates in the Yaoguang Hall inheritance contest. During a passage trial that prohibits attacks and subjects competitors to mounting Will Impact, he attacks Lord Changjiu to drag him down. The origin will expels both contestants; other struggling participants subsequently use the same tactic against rivals 131.
Cooperation with the Universe Artifact Refining Group
The rise of Yang Hao’s Universe Artifact Refining Group changes the alliance’s approach to humanity. Star River argues that offending humans could jeopardize access to custom Supreme Treasures. With no fundamental territorial conflict between the two powers, the leadership considers its past grudges less important than securing long-term forging services 155.
Star River volunteers to pursue a long-term contract and contacts Yang Hao to discuss cooperation. Yang Hao assigns Lord Liang Zhu to handle the matter. The alliance’s response is comparatively slow: other organizations, including the Snow Frontier Alliance, have already sought similar arrangements 155.
An alliance Universe Master subsequently attempts to commission a Supreme Treasure for a Demon Race friend. Shi Feng detects the proxy order and warns him against repeating it. The Group publicly announces that commissioning treasures on behalf of the Three Races will result in unilateral termination of the offending organization’s contract and future targeting by humanity, making one member’s misconduct a potential threat to the entire alliance’s access 155.
Lord Sheduo’s Possession
An ancient being possesses Lord Sheduo after he discovers a spacecraft buried in the Water-Ice Domain and touches a drop of divine blood. The possessor intends to cultivate rapidly while avoiding the Primal Universe’s origin will 174.
Sheduo’s other body remains in the Northern Border Alliance’s territory. When a Venerable of his race asks him to resurrect a dead friend, he refuses and tells the petitioner to find another Universe Master. This uncharacteristic behavior causes the Venerable to suspect that his patriarch has changed 174.
Humanity’s Rise and the Machine Race’s Collapse
After humanity kills Mechanical Father God, the alliance’s three leading figures summon its Universe Masters. The normally absent alliance leader personally attends and endorses Star River’s warning not to provoke humanity, telling members that doing so would create trouble for him as well 185.
The collapse of the Machine Race also brings a powerful recruit. Lord Shihuang leaves its former territory, establishes a new race, and joins the Northern Border Alliance. Because fifth-order recruits are rare among its mostly weaker Universe Masters, the alliance welcomes him 186.
When Zhen Jiao later proposes a coalition against humanity, the Northern Border Alliance Leader refuses to commit. He sees no direct conflict with humanity and privately treats his position as nominal enough to abandon if the alliance faces disaster. His refusal forms part of the wider failure to organize a united front against the humans 187.
Later Balance of Power and the Outer Domain Battlefield
After humanity’s victory over True God She Duo, the Northern Border Alliance remains an apex power within a universe increasingly dominated by humanity. Yang Hao’s assessment places it alongside the Demon Race, Zerg, Starry Sky Beast Alliance, Ancestral God Cult, and Crystal Race, while the newly formed Shi Hua Alliance emerges as a comparable multiracial power 214.
Yang Hao’s review of his own forces also reveals that one of his avatars has joined the Northern Border Alliance 214.
Following negotiations over the Outer Domain Battlefield, the Northern Border Alliance and Shi Hua Alliance jointly take it over. Together they lead one of its three major factions, alongside separate factions led by humanity and the Demon Race. The battlefield continues to serve countless races fighting from the Universe Level through the Immortal level 217.
Fragmentation During the Trillion-Era Period
By the trillion-era period, both the Northern Border Alliance and the Shi Hua Alliance have split apart. As individual member races produce True Gods, they no longer consider collective alliance membership necessary. Provided they do not provoke humanity, such races can generally secure their own position in the Primal Universe and prefer independent development to continued internal disputes 240.
