Background / History

Early life and the Azure Sun Sect

Yuan Yao and her senior sister Yanli were ordinary disciples of a small sect with unremarkable cultivation aptitude. Believing that remaining there offered little hope of reaching Foundation Establishment, they left together to seek opportunities. Their travels brought numerous hardships, including a period of separation 207.

Yuan Yao later encountered the Azure Sun Sect’s young master. She and Yanli eventually killed him together, but his dying counterattack nearly destroyed Yanli’s body and soul. Yuan Yao described the killing as an act of self-defense and rejected the circulating account that characterized them as his concubines 165 207.

While traveling under the name Ruan Yao, she was pursued by three Azure Sun Sect cultivators in the Outer Sea. Xiao Yu killed her pursuers, and she paid him with information about Void Sky Hall and an Azure Fire Thunder. She also invited him to accompany her into the hall, although he suspected her rough map omitted important secrets 164 165.

Void Sky Hall

Yuan Yao entered Void Sky Hall primarily to obtain Soul-Nurturing Wood for Yanli. Her Soul-Screaming Beast initially made the Land of Ghost Grievances easy to traverse, but a powerful ghost separated her from the beast and overwhelmed her defenses. Xiao Yu rescued her again in exchange for Azure Fire Thunder bombs, then confronted her about her true identity. She acknowledged her name and told him her history with Yanli 207 211.

To secure passage into the Inner Hall, Yuan Yao offered Xiao Yu her Soul-Screaming Beast, an Azure Sun Sect array formation text, and finally a pledge to become his woman. He accepted after learning that her objective was to save her senior sister, while warning that he could not guarantee her protection inside the Inner Hall 208.

She accompanied him through the subsequent trials, helped attack Profound Bone, and remained with him despite fearing Extreme Yin. On the Molten Rock Path, she killed a late Core Formation attacker with Azure Fire Thunder. Xiao Yu later carried her across dangerous fiery grass and continued carrying her for two days; during that journey, she became more emotionally open with him and shared stories from her past 215 218 219 220.

At the Spirit Pill Pavilion, Yuan Yao breached a protective shield with Azure Fire Thunder and claimed a jade bottle, triggering her teleportation away. She subsequently reunited with Xiao Yu at the Inner Hall entrance and thanked him for helping her pass the trial 227 230.

Xiao Yu later reached her secluded bathing chamber through a hidden teleportation formation. He destroyed the formation and forcibly embraced her despite her protests and struggle; she eventually stopped resisting after recalling her earlier pledge. They remained together for two days. Afterward, she shared ten-thousand-year spirit milk with him and identified the chamber containing Soul-Nurturing Wood, which became central to Yanli’s recovery 241 242 293.

Reviving Yanli and entering the Netherworld

After leaving Void Sky Hall, Yuan Yao declined Xiao Yu’s invitation to depart with him. She chose to remain near Huangming Island until she could revive Yanli, promising to accompany him afterward. Before they separated, he gave her protective resources, spirit insects, and a divine-sense cultivation art 244.

Years later, Xiao Yu found her concealed island abode. By then, she had reached late Core Formation, and Yanli’s soul had recovered substantially through nourishment from the Soul-Nurturing Wood. Xiao Yu replaced her Soul-Returning Technique with an improved version, increasing its expected effectiveness and reducing its cost 293.

Yuan Yao successfully restored Yanli to life in another body. As Ghost Mist engulfed the island, Xiao Yu bound Yuan Yao, Yanli, and Mei Ning to himself to keep them together. All four were drawn into the Land of Yin Nether, where magical power and divine sense were suppressed 296.

Inside the Netherworld, Xiao Yu identified Yuan Yao’s heavenly yin body and encouraged her to change cultivation methods after their escape. She also put her recently learned mortal martial arts to use against a Three-Headed Yin Beast. The group eventually escaped through a space rift and crossed the Boundless Sea to the Giant Sword Sect, where Xiao Yu arranged cave abodes for the women 297 303 304 305.

Principal wife and Nascent Soul cultivation

Yuan Yao completed a change of cultivation arts before Xiao Yu brought her to the Falling Cloud Sect. Although jealous of his additional partners, she was reassured when he publicly declared her his principal wife 341.

Following nearly twenty years of cultivation on Green Spirit Island, she approached peak late Core Formation. She accompanied Xiao Yu back to the Heavenly South, joined his party at Heavenly One City during preparations against the Mulan invasion, and later entered Devilfall Valley with him and Purple Spirit 349 351 370.

By Xiao Yu’s return to Phoenix Spirit Island, Yuan Yao had formed her Nascent Soul and switched to the Brahma Saint Heavenly Demonic Cultivation Method. At the Myriad Cultivators Ceremony, he publicly introduced her alongside Nie Ying, Purple Spirit, and Liu Yu as his four Dao companions 400 402.

Yuan Yao is described as exceptionally beautiful, with a softly rounded face, very fair skin, and lustrous black hair 164.

She bargains away valuable resources to reach the Inner Hall, postpones leaving with Xiao Yu until her sister can be revived, and insists on performing the Soul-Returning Technique despite its expected cultivation loss 208 244 293.

She is cautious and resourceful rather than openly fearless. She conceals her identity while traveling, prepares protective tools before entering Void Sky Hall, and maintains an island formation strong enough to help keep the Azure Sun Sect from finding her. She also openly admits her fear of Extreme Yin, yet chooses to remain with Xiao Yu because he is the only person there she trusts 164 218 219 293.

Her gratitude does not prevent her from challenging Xiao Yu. She calls his second rescue a transaction rather than an act of generosity and responds coldly to his teasing. Once their relationship develops, she becomes affectionate and playful, though his growing number of partners provokes jealousy 207 293 341.
