| Cultivation | Last explicitly documented magical realm: late Foundation Establishment. Physical strength and special abilities substantially exceed that realm 89 103 109 |
| Status | Alive; preparing to fight Han Li during his attempt to take Nangong Wan away 148 |
Power Progression
Magical realms and body-tempering comparisons are recorded separately: a stated combat equivalence does not establish the corresponding magical cultivation realm.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Internal energy developed | 2 | Begins producing internal energy at age five; starts swordsmanship at six. |
| Minor Circuit | 3 | Reaches this internal-energy stage during her early martial training. |
| Initial body-tempering bottleneck | 13 | Can lift three hundred jin effortlessly. Golden Dao Patterns appear within her cells, which she identifies as restrictions preventing further advancement. |
| Body-tempering breakthrough equivalent to entering Qi Refining | 21 | A retrospective statement confirms she has overcome her previous bottleneck; she still lacks a spiritual root and magical power. |
| Approximately tenth-level Qi Refining strength | 23 | Her body tempering reaches this comparison before Spirit Beast Mountain’s Golden Core cultivator attacks Jia Yuan City. |
| First mysterious aperture; access to Stellar Power | 24 25 42 | Survives near-destruction and awakens a vortex-like aperture in her stomach. Her body heals stronger, her internal force disappears, and the aperture extends her lifespan by one hundred years. |
| Early Foundation Establishment spell-level striking power | 43 | Punches through a puppet after firearm attacks weaken its chest armor. This is a physical-power comparison, not magical Foundation Establishment. |
| Diamond Art, third layer; late Foundation Establishment-equivalent body | 48 | A year of cleansing at the Red Beauty Pavilion strengthens her physique to this level. |
| Spiritual-root awakening | 48 49 | The seven pure spiritual qis draw out her past-life soul, which possesses a spiritual root. The Third Immortal Lady identifies the awakened root as mutated but cannot determine its attribute. |
| Heartless Art, thirteenth level of Qi Refining | 49 | Achieved after twenty years of cultivation on Seven Immortal Island. |
| Early Foundation Establishment | 49 | Breaks through with her first Foundation Establishment Pill and consolidates for a month. Combined body and magical cultivation lets her fight late Foundation Establishment opponents. |
| Diamond Art mastered | 66 | Explicitly described as already mastered when she begins studying Dragon Fist. |
| Transformation ability developed | 70 | Research and training in bioelectricity, magical power, and bodily reconstruction allow transformation, though a stronger combat form requires suitable spiritual-energy pathways. |
| Heavenly Demon Art: leg pathways opened | 74 | Absorbs more than ten thousand Lesser Heavenly Demons to open the pathways in both legs. |
| Heavenly Demon Art refined; multiple forms of growth | 81 82 | Learns to separate Heavenly Demons into components that strengthen her body, divine sense, and magical power. Acquires traits allowing her to control low-ranking Heavenly Demons. |
| Middle Foundation Establishment | 87 | Her magical power reaches this realm; the Heavenly Demon Art has strengthened her torso, and she condenses her first strand of Formless Sword Qi. |
| Late Nascent Soul-equivalent physical strength — self-assessment | 89 | Judges her bodily strength to be at this level while preparing microscopic formations in her blood. This does not establish a Nascent Soul magical realm. |
| Heavenly Demon Art mastered | 103 | Completes the art during fifteen years of seclusion. |
| Ten Thousand Swords Art mastered | 103 | Requires another fifteen years; strengthened divine sense improves her ability to control flying swords. |
| Three strands of Formless Sword Qi | 103 | Condenses three strands after extensive refinement, consuming most of her available materials. |
| Late Foundation Establishment | 103 | Reaches this magical realm after forty-five years of seclusion. She subsequently studies the restrictions barring Core Formation rather than immediately breaking through 104. |
| Sword Wolf power absorbed | 109 | Repairs her injured body while absorbing the Sword Wolf’s power and emerges in a half-human, half-wolf form. Two Golden Core observers judge her fighting strength comparable to a Nascent Soul powerhouse. |
| “Three Lives, Three Worlds” fusion | 131 132 | Temporarily combines her current-life soul, past-life soul, and Zi Ling’s divine sense to access tremendous reincarnation-law power. This is a reversible fusion, not a documented permanent realm advancement. |
Background / History
Mo Caihuan is a transmigrator whose previous identity was Mo Xiaoming. She becomes the Mo Residence’s third young lady, born without spiritual roots, and retains knowledge of the original novel. Unable to begin ordinary immortal cultivation, she turns to martial arts, medicine, and ways of obtaining cultivation resources 2.
Her education begins unusually early: she learns to read at three, studies the household’s martial manuals at four, develops internal energy at five, practices swordsmanship at six, and studies medicine at seven. At eight, she saves someone for the first time 2.
By fourteen, she is the Whale-Jiao Society’s celebrated young genius. She organizes members’ female relatives into income-producing groups and uses them as a channel for suggestions. She also selects loyal members to research gunpowder, firearms, and chemical manufacturing in secret 3.
Her understanding of her transmigration changes much later. Although she initially reasons that her arrival cannot be conventional cultivator possession, she eventually discovers that the original Mo Caihuan was reborn as Zi Ling. Reincarnation rules consequently treat the two women as one person, allowing her past-life soul to complete the unusual “three lives, three worlds” configuration 2 132.
Appearance
- Youthful beauty: As a teenager, she retains childish features and slight baby fat even while displaying murderous resolve 4.
- Adult clothing: Wears a long skirt over trousers, favoring a practical, neat appearance 76.
- Hairstyle: Keeps a top bun secured by a jade hairpin, with a thin layer of long hair falling down her back; the style remains unchanged from adulthood 76.
- Misty Fragrance: Her distinctive fragrance becomes purer through Stellar Power cultivation and is described as embracing others like the boundless sky 37 56.
- Historical image: Photographs of the founding empress show a composed, heroic bearing 114.
- Transformed features: Acquires a half-human, half-wolf form and later fights with a transformed dark-silver arm 109 127.
Personality
Mo Caihuan combines compassion with decisive violence. Society members admire her willingness to eat with them, listen to their concerns, and help their families. The Fifth Madam describes her as possessing “thunderous methods and a bodhisattva’s heart,” praising her refusal to sacrifice lives capturing a fortress that no longer has strategic value 3 5.
She favors practical results over prestige or inherited convention. Her thinking emphasizes quantification, experimentation, and the unity of knowledge and action. Even her efforts to improve others’ lives have an acknowledged element of mutual benefit: a cooperative cultivation system can produce discoveries she can use herself 20 31 75 110.
Her caution is directed at power as much as danger. She refuses a possession opportunity that might place her under Moon Worshipper’s control, doubts promises of self-sacrifice until they are tested, and rejects the idea that high cultivation guarantees honesty 40 59 85.
Despite her political achievements, she refuses to abandon immortality. She fears exhausting her lifespan and believes even a powerful mortal kingdom will eventually disappear, whereas cultivators can continue pursuing the Great Dao. She also openly enjoys beauty and admits to vanity when admired 27 41 46 125 137.

- Obtains an object-teleportation design from the Reincarnation Hall through her past-life soul, but lacks materials capable of supporting it 78.
Past-Life Soul and Spiritual-Root Lending
Her past-life soul gathers chaos power during transmigration and forms a chaos spiritual root.
- Can lend spiritual roots to others, including the heavenly spiritual roots used by her elder sisters 51 52.
- Allows magical cultivation to grow through lending and collecting interest while Mo Caihuan concentrates on body tempering 52.
- Eventually conducts lending across space and returns knowledge from another world 78.
- Must remain concealed because discovery could invite attempts to seize it 52.

Sword Arts and Close Combat
Her fighting methods combine martial technique, sword cultivation, and exceptional physical strength.
- Dragon Fist: Mobilizes essence, energy, and spirit into a concentrated strike; she also applies it through kicks 66 85.
- Ten Thousand Swords Art: A complete nine-layer method whose final layer can control 108 flying swords in a formation and draw on heaven-and-earth spiritual qi 50.
- Formless Sword Qi: Refines intangible sword qi sharper than a flying sword, but each strand demands enormous resources 103.
- Combat limitation: Before compensating with bodily formations, her lack of effective ranged attacks prevents her from finishing the level-eight demon beast despite matching it in close combat 85 89.
Transformation and Reincarnation
She investigates transformation as the reconstruction of the body and its spiritual-energy pathways.
- Trains bioelectricity alongside bodily and magical cultivation to support transformation 70.
- Absorbs the Sword Wolf’s power while repairing catastrophic injuries, acquiring its form 109.
- Recovers from Nangong Wan’s Samsara Divine Light by repeatedly reassembling her scrambled divine sense 127.
- Experiments with modifying the Plain Maiden Reincarnation Art, but accepts Nangong Wan’s criticism that her approach is too crude and premature 128 136.
- Uses the reversible fusion with Zi Ling and her past-life soul only when necessary, resisting the temptation to remain united 132.
Medicine, Senses, and Cooking
Her medical education and trained senses remain useful well beyond her mortal childhood.
- Uses Food Immortal’s General Knowledge Formula to sharpen her senses 16.
- Treats Chu Fangfang’s snakebite during their entrapment in an illusion formation 60.

- She plays a younger version of herself during filming, yet the director still asks her to reproduce his preferred interpretation of the empress 114.
- Her eldest senior brother Yan Ge writes My Junior Sister the Empress, an autobiography containing heavily embellished accounts of her accomplishments 114.
