Background / History
Family and training
Chu Fangfang grew up as the privileged daughter of the Prefect of Nan Commandery. Her father's political influence and her master's fierce protection gave her considerable leverage over both mortal establishments and cultivators. She also learned scheming and intrigue from her father, skills she later applied to commerce 32 35 87.
Wine Butterfly Fairy spent thirty years taking her around the world, exposing her to battles, corpse-looting, and the dangers hidden behind apparently safe situations. This training made her cautious when investigating ruins and collecting spoils 58.
Her parents eventually died. Despite working to extend her mother's life, Fangfang could only watch her grow old. When severely injured, she continued to call for her mother and dream of the warmth and acceptance she had provided 60 86.
Meeting Mo Caihuan
Fangfang first came to Taichang City believing Chen Bufei was having an affair with Mo Caihuan. Learning that Mo was a cook, she assumed her fiancé must be responsible for Mo's intellectual achievements. Her attitude changed after tasting Mo's food and using her special art to perceive Mo's sincerity and unusual fragrance 32.
She invited Mo to practice the Aroma Cherishing Heart Method with her. Their first night of dual cultivation gave Fangfang results equivalent to three nights of cultivating alone. Rather than persuade Mo to leave Taichang, she stayed and bought the Full Fragrance Restaurant, allowing Mo to devote more time to spreading Mohism 33.
The failed restrictions
Fangfang secretly placed Cherish-the-Fragrant Restrictions on Chen Bufei, intending to keep him from interfering with her relationship with Mo. Her proposed arrangement was for both women to marry him publicly while he served as a cover for their private relationship. Hua Jianqing discovered the restrictions, confronted her, and anonymously warned Mo after Fangfang refused to abandon the plan 35.
When Mo revealed the Teleportation Gate linking Great Jin and the Heavenly South, Fangfang tried to make Chen surrender control of the Great Jin side to her master. He refused and revealed that her restrictions had never affected him: he respected women as equals rather than regarding them as delicate beings requiring his protection 36 37.
Chen had understood her intentions and tolerated the arrangement to satisfy his sect. Fangfang conceded that she had underestimated him and agreed to control the gate jointly, while still asking him to act as a shield for her and Mo 37.
Founding the Fragrant Pavilion
After reaching Core Formation, Fangfang founded the Fragrant Pavilion. Over the following thirty years, it became known for accepting only beautiful female disciples, who cultivated romantic connections with promising young members of major sects. Being chosen by one of its disciples became a mark of distinction among young cultivators 56.
Although Fangfang and Mo remained Dao companions, their approaches increasingly diverged. Fangfang preferred power plays, while Mo favored open strategies; many of their views could not be reconciled 56.
Ancient array exploration
Fangfang invited Mo to examine a damaged ancient Teleportation Array she had discovered with Han Jiangye of the Immortal Transformation Sect. Their journey took forty days aboard Fangfang's Willow-Leaf Flying Boat. At the cave entrance, Fangfang killed an Antlered Bear with two Water Bullet Techniques 56.
After Han Jiangye and the formation expert Liu Ren killed each other over the gate, Fangfang and Mo collected their belongings. Fangfang used her green snake to retrieve the Storage Bags safely, avoiding poisonous blood left on Han's corpse. They split 120,000 spirit stones equally, with other useful items to be valued and settled afterward 57 58.
While testing an escape talisman, the pair reached another island and were drawn into a Five-Element Illusion Formation. Fangfang suffered a venomous snakebite that her antidote pills could not fully cure. She released misty fragrance before losing consciousness, trusting Mo to find her; Mo located and treated her 59 60.
After dismantling the formation, they recovered five super-grade spirit stones. Fangfang took the metal- and water-attribute stones to refine magical treasures. They also discovered the sealed Sunflame Monk, whose overwhelming divine sense prevented their escape. His release was negotiated in exchange for a pill, three years of protection, and a vow never to harm them 60 61 62.
Chaotic Star Sea and the Outer Sea expedition
Fangfang traveled with Mo and Sunflame Monk to the Chaotic Star Sea to gather materials. After settling in Tianxing City, she entered seclusion to refine her life-bound magical treasure. Five years later, she emerged having completed only the water-attribute weapon; the metal-attribute attempt failed and wasted its super-grade spirit stone 62 65 67 73.
She then went alone to the Outer Sea to test the weapon, hunt demon beasts, and recover her losses. Mo supplied an earth-attribute super-grade spirit stone for emergencies 73.
Her expedition initially succeeded against fifth- and sixth-level demon beasts. After entering an eighth-level beast's lair, however, she escaped only by detonating the emergency stone. Determined to recoup the loss, she explored ruins, nearly died, and damaged her magical treasure. She was captured while returning to Tianxing City 86.
A Nascent Soul cultivator demanded two super-grade spirit stones for her release at Coral Island. Mo rescued her during the confrontation, and Sunflame Monk killed the captor. Fangfang later compared her attempts to recover her losses to a gambler's behavior 84 85 86.
Business and later activities
Following her rescue, Fangfang helped manage Mo's business and embraced commerce as a safer way to obtain cultivation resources. She supported declining the Miaoyin Sect's proposal to cooperate on a Void Sky Hall expedition 87 88.
She also accompanied Mo's Micro-Engraved Formation experiment, questioning the safety of implanting untested arrays into the bloodstream and reacting with alarm when Mo's arm exploded 89 90.
After Mo spent sixty years in seclusion, Fangfang was handling factory ceremonies, product finalization, and Star Palace bidding for the Mo Ling Company. She updated Mo on commercial competition, regional conflict, and a planned submarine expedition across the Boundless Sea 105.
Her letter later enabled Mo to take charge of the Fragrant Pavilion and use it as the foundation for the Three Lives Society's concealed trading and mission network 145.
Appearance
Chu Fangfang is repeatedly described as beautiful, with a noblewoman's bearing 33 56.
- Clothing: Wears a sky-blue palace gown at the Fragrant Pavilion headquarters and a long blue dress in Tianxing City 56 105.
- Hair: Black; notably disheveled after her difficult magical-treasure refinement 73.
- Fragrance: Departs her first meeting with Mo in a waft of fragrance 33.
Personality
Fangfang is initially possessive, willful, and accustomed to getting what she wants. She treats her fiancé's future as hers to decide and threatens the peace of White Dew Academy and Mount Li Academy when Hua Jianqing challenges her plans. Her affectionate behavior toward Mo conceals a willingness to manipulate others 32 35.
Her attachment to Mo nevertheless develops beyond simple attraction. Fangfang explains that Mo's misty fragrance has enveloped her own, creating a dependence rooted in trust. She openly admires Mo's intelligence and earnestness, while criticizing her tendency to put others first 34 37 56.
Despite her practical caution, Fangfang is vulnerable to the desire to recover losses. Her disastrous Outer Sea expedition forces her to recognize that she had ignored her own limits. Afterward, she becomes more interested in business than treasure hunting and argues that survival matters more than obtaining rare treasures 86 87 88.
Abilities & Skills
Aroma Cherishing Heart Method
An adaptation of the ancient Bliss Zen Method that permits dual cultivation without restricting the partners' sexes 33.
- Cultivates misty fragrance, nourished by a partner's constitution and bearing 33.
- Allows Mo to produce body-strengthening fragrance despite lacking a spiritual root 33.
- Fangfang claims it preserves youthful looks, produces a subtle bodily scent, prolongs life, and wards off illness 33.

- Can leave a scent trail for Mo to follow, as Fangfang does before losing consciousness in the illusion formation 60.
Cherish-the-Fragrant Restrictions
A control technique dependent on the target feeling a desire to cherish and protect women as delicate flowers or precious jade 37.
- Appears as strange pink threads within Chen Bufei's divine sense 35.
- Intended to make him obey Fangfang and refrain from disrupting her relationship with Mo 35 36.
- Fails against Chen because his respect for women does not include the protective attitude the technique requires 36 37.
Water spells
Fangfang specializes in water spells, supported by her water spiritual root 56.
- Kills an Antlered Bear with two precisely aimed Water Bullet Techniques 56.
- Her water bullets contain enough power to penetrate one or two meters of iron plate 56.
- Successfully refines a water-attribute magical treasure suited to her spiritual root 73.
Perception and fieldcraft
- Uses a special art to read people, perceiving sincerity through Mo's cooking and misty qi and fragrance when observing her directly 32.

- Recognizes Demon-Sealing Runes on the chains surrounding Sunflame Monk's coffin 60.
- Admits she lacks expertise in magic arrays and relies on Mo for repair and formation-breaking 56 60.
- Has no item capable of defending against Sunflame Monk's soul attacks during their first encounter 61.
Commerce and political maneuvering
