Background / History

Life at Professor Carolina’s Laboratory

Riolu lived at Professor Carolina’s research laboratory and grew up around Cynthia’s Champion team. Cynthia had looked after him and attributed his unusually demanding standards to that upbringing. At least a dozen Trainers—including outstanding Trainers from Sinnoh—had failed to earn his approval 30 34 35.

Cynthia brought him to the Sunshine Gym to help Qingyu build a stronger team. Rather than simply handing him over, she required Qingyu to earn his recognition in battle and withheld her own commands 33 34.

Joining Qingyu

Riolu sensed little malice in Qingyu’s Aura but still demanded proof of his strength. Against Eevee, he dodged Covet with Detect and immediately used Counter; Eevee’s extraordinary reflexes allowed her to evade the punch 34.

The ensuing standoff convinced Riolu that Eevee was deliberately holding back. He misread Qingyu’s concern about winning as disappointment in his own weakness, then interpreted Eevee’s incomplete, damage-free Snarl as a restrained teaching demonstration. Believing he had received guidance from a superior opponent, he stopped attacking and accepted Qingyu 35.

When Qingyu offered his hand, Riolu sensed his sincere welcome and resolved to train harder to meet his expectations 35.

Isle of Armor Training

Qingyu sent Riolu to Galar through the Travel Raising system, choosing the Isle of Armor for its concentration of Fighting-type challengers. Riolu’s victories attracted Urshifu, which acknowledged his strength and guided him toward the Master Dojo 41 42.

Mustard immediately detected Riolu’s concealed training weights and required him to remove them for the entrance trial. Riolu evaded Mienfoo’s opening Fake Out, endured its deceptive follow-up attack, and knocked it out with one punch. Mustard welcomed him to return and train whenever he wished 42 43.

After the trip, Qingyu replaced Riolu’s punishing exercise habits with a more manageable daily routine: 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a ten-kilometer run 44.

Sunshine Gym Battle

Riolu represented Qingyu against Nurse Joy’s Chimecho despite the Psychic-type matchup. He interrupted Growl with Fake Out, remained unfazed by Astonish, and followed with Quick Attack. When Chimecho used Extrasensory, Qingyu trusted Riolu’s judgment rather than issuing an immediate command; Riolu evaded the attack and finished the battle with a chopping strike 49 50.

Appearance

Riolu resembles both a puppy and a young child, with a small, frail-looking body 33 34.

  • Coloration: Blue-black body 33.
  • Face: Black markings resembling a mask 33.
  • Eyes: Red, with a determined expression 33.
  • Training accessories: Concealed iron weights around his wrists, ankles, and thighs 43.

Personality

Riolu is exceptionally cautious, preferring to examine unfamiliar Auras and begin battles defensively. Although Cynthia considers him extraordinarily talented, he regards himself as an ordinary Pokémon who must compensate through effort. Comparing himself with her Champion team leaves him convinced that he is inadequate; he even treats forcing Garchomp back a single step as evidence of poor talent 34 35 41.

His dedication readily becomes excessive. He performs squats while eating and considers doubling his workout to 8,000 punches in one evening. Qingyu worries that his methods verge on self-harm 41 44.

He is courteous toward opponents, saluting after battles, but disapproves of refusing challenges merely out of fear of losing. His tendency to overthink also produces extreme solutions: after hearing about Yawn, he decides to test whether using Fake Out on himself could dispel drowsiness 42 50.

Abilities & Skills

Aura Perception

Cynthia describes Riolu as a born Aura user whose talent is already evident before his first birthday 35.

  • Reads other creatures’ emotions and assesses unfamiliar presences 34.
  • Recognizes Eevee’s deep trust in Qingyu and senses Qingyu’s genuine desire to welcome him 34 35.
  • Detects strange black spots within Qingyu’s Aura, but only speculates about their meaning 35.
  • His emotional readings do not prevent mistaken conclusions: he correctly senses tension but misunderstands its cause during his recruitment battle 35.

Prankster and Detect

Riolu combines his Hidden Ability with rapid defensive reactions 34 43.

  • Uses Detect to evade Eevee’s Covet and Mienfoo’s surprise Fake Out 34 43.
  • Mustard identifies Prankster as the likely explanation for his response to Mienfoo’s normally difficult-to-react-to opener 43.
  • His defense is not infallible: Mienfoo’s Feint and disguised Force Palm catch him before he can readjust 43.
  • Fast opponents place him under particular pressure 43.

Martial Arts and Counterattacks

Riolu can fight effectively without a Trainer’s commands, defeating numerous Isle of Armor challengers on his own 42.

  • Counter: Uses a return punch before Machoke lands its attack, surprising its Trainer with behavior unlike the move’s expected requirement 42.
  • Concentrated retaliation: Against Mienfoo, commits his strength to one punch while prepared to lose consciousness from the incoming blow 43.
  • Fake Out: Closes distance almost instantly and interrupts Chimecho’s Growl; its speed comes at the expense of striking power 49.
  • Quick Attack and Bullet Punch: Uses Quick Attack in Gym combat and repeatedly practices Bullet Punch against a punching bag 41 49.
  • Other recorded moves: Endure, Feint, and Metal Claw 34.

Unseen Fist Training

Riolu studies the Isle of Armor dojo’s ultimate technique with Urshifu and Mienshao 43.

  • The technique is presented as martial arts learned through Mustard’s teachings, rather than exclusively an innate Ability 43.
  • His latest recorded progress is 5%; he has not demonstrated completed mastery 44.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Luxury Ball — Cynthia releases him from this ball when introducing him to Qingyu 33.
  • Concealed iron weights — Worn around his wrists, ankles, and thighs. Neither Cynthia nor Qingyu had discovered them before Mustard noticed them 42 43.
  • Efficiency-Boosting Pill — Supplied by Qingyu and consumed on the Isle of Armor. Greatly increases experience-gain efficiency and temporarily leaves Riolu feeling unusually energetic and mentally active 41.

Relationships

  • Qingyu — Trainer. Riolu trusts his intentions, interprets the dojo trip as carefully planned guidance, and strives not to disappoint him. Qingyu tailors training to his interests while trying to curb his overwork 35 41 43 44.
  • Cynthia — Former caretaker, internally called “Boss.” Her approval carries considerable weight with him, and growing up around her team shapes his demanding standards 34 35.
  • Eevee — Teammate and recruitment-battle opponent. Riolu mistakes her evasive reflexes and nervous heartbeat for signs of overwhelming strength; the two subsequently get along well 35 41.
  • Cynthia’s Lucario — Training partner and benchmark. Riolu compares Eevee’s supposed restraint with Lucario’s guidance and hopes eventually to defeat Lucario fairly 35 42.
  • Mustard — Martial arts mentor who uncovers his hidden weights, tests him, and grants him access to the dojo 42 43.
  • Urshifu and Mienshao — Dojo instructors. Urshifu recognizes his strength, while Mienshao teaches him Fake Out; both guide his subsequent training 42 43.
