Merely seeing Zekrom and battling it once had piqued the interest of the most renowned professor in the Unova Region. It showed just how much appeal Pokémon like Zekrom held for these scholars.

If Professor Oak learned that Ash had someday encountered or caught a Lugia or Ho-Oh in the wild, he would certainly ask a few more questions and have Ash transfer them back to the laboratory.
